Veteran 222 San Jose, CA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Woo-hoo! I'm in! Presently: I'm blown away by my lightning fast pace of 13:25ish miles. It's come down from over 15:00 since my first 5K two years ago. This being my first year of really training, I was expecting to just build volume and work on getting faster next year. But after 2 months I'm already more than 1min/mi faster! Goals: My big goal this year is to finish the Nike women's 1/2 mary in October. My secret goal that I don't let to the front of my brain too often is to do it in under 3 hrs. I'm in the middle of the BT couch to 5K currently, and the longest I've gone is 3.5 mi, so 13.1 still sounds like a lifetime. But I paid, so I'll do it one way or another! This week: I moved up to 18/30 min running (3 min running at a stretch, then 2 min walking) Monday and it felt good! The same scheduled for Thursday and then I try for 4 miles on Saturday! Good luck everyone, thanks for the club, and thanks cadreamer for posting on the main board! I thought all this challenge stuff was for the fast people! |

Elite 3020 Bay Area, CA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Hey all, just wanted some company over here... Last week: 3:06 of running in 3x that week. Still working on getting to 4x a week - seems like the impossible goal. AND - I ran 54 miles for the month of March - this is HUGE for me, I don't think I've ever done that kind of mileage before. This week: once again 3 hours (at least) and 4x. Maybe this week will be the magic place where I can actually hit 4x a week. |

Member 58 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club I ran three miles at once! That's the most I've done since I quit HS cross country. I'm going to try to run three and a half this weekend! I'm not sure how long that will take me since I didn't time the three miles. |

Expert 1022 In limbo | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club I was directed to this thread/club from another post so I thought I'd come by and say hi. At this point figuring out my min/mile doesn't really make sense since I'm only actually running 4 of the 30 min. I'm out. I'm definitely still far from even running a full mile! Anyway, my goal at this point is to make it out for three 30-min. workouts per week, and slowly increase the amount of time running vs. walking. Eventually, someday, I'll actually run a mile so I can know how fast I am! lol |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Well I walked alot before I started to run. The neat thing about that is if I can not handle the run I just slow down a little bit and fast a decent pace and not lose much ground. I did 3 miles at 10:30 a mile yesterday with a new group and nearly died. |

Expert 2189 Dodge County, MN (out in the corn) | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Can I join up too? I'm rehabbing an "almost" stress fracture on my left tibia. It keeps flaring up and I am making NO progress. I'm going to have to start back from scratch and walk. Not much fun, but it's all I've got. Even at my best, I only had a 28 min 5k. I have a tri on May 20 with a 4 mile run. Yea, right. My goal is to finish that "run" in less than 50 min. Nice to be here and look forward to reading more. Pattie |

Pro 4216 Sous Mon Diadème | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Three runs this week... 3 miles @ 11:31, 4 miles @ 10:42 and 1.5 miles @ 10:46. I have been trying to break the 12:00/mile mark since I started back to running in late December and last week's runs were all right around 12/mile so I feel like this was a huge breakthrough week for me. I have been focusing a lot on HR zone training and I think it's really helped. |

Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Oo, I am a slow/rehabbing runner right now, too, after compartment release surgery in both legs. Clear to run by my doc, I had a really amazing coach set up a return-to-fitness program for me (after his partner suggested I do "STD training" during the base period ... hmm, maybe fun to do the training but definitely not worth the consequences). I am hopeful that the outcome of my surgery will eventually lead me to be kicked out of this group, but for now I am definitely a member & doing a lot of run/walk intervals. |

Expert 1022 In limbo | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Well I ran inside on the treadmill today because it's cold and snowy outside....depending on the accuracy of treadmill's distance meter, I averaged 18:07/mile over the 30 minutes. Hey, could be worse! Just means i'm going to be in this club for a loooooooooong time! I managed to run my 4 min. straight this time, which I couldn't do last time (had to split into 2 sets of 2 min.) so that's an improvement. Feelin good! I love to see concrete improvements no matter how small! |

Elite 3020 Bay Area, CA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club On "running." I consider a run to be anything where I am trying to run. Period. Any workout that I want tracked as run mileage vs "Walking for 30 min" I ALSO religiously track time, distance and average pace. Why? So I can see if things are changing, if there are improvements. I find it really helpful with the logs to look back to see where I was in January/February etc. Some runs are fast, some are slow. (fast being say 15:30 vs. slow of 17:00) Only YOU can figure out what is a run and what is not. If you consider yourself to be doing a "run" workout then I would track it under Run. I mean, the logs are for YOU to use for yourself really - so who cares what anyone else thinks. Track it where it makes the most sense to you. ok, off the soapbox now... |

Master 1790 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Woo hoo, I went for a jog during my lunch hour for the first time. It felt great! I jogged 20 minutes without a walking break except to take my jacket off and felt like I could go another 10 minutes but I didn't want to push it. Felt a bit self-conscious about being a slow bugger (my time was just a hair under 13 mm) but didn't let that stop me. I'd like to jog twice/week during my lunch break. Only issue was I got *really* sweaty. Eww. Thank goodness I had a complete change of clothes for jogging. |

Veteran 222 San Jose, CA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club lil_turtle: I find I'm slower on the treadmill (at least according to it). I think this is generally true for us slow buggers. Anyways, as you'll see below my pace is way different even from track to road; a lot of people report vastly different paces on different surfaces. Just something to consider. Well, the week started out great with two track runs: 30 min each, 18/30 running, 3 min running at a stretch. I was feeling really good running a whole 3 minutes at a time! Pace was dipping dangerously below 13 min/mi! Then Sunday I tried my longest distance to date - 4 miles. Of course, with the busy Easter weekend, the only time I could fit in this run was at 1pm. Well, it's getting hot here in CA, so it wasn't such a great run. Over 14 min/mi. But I did manage the whole 4 mi. Today I learned I'm getting a check back for some overpaid race fees, so I'm thinking about using it for a 4 mi race next week (even though my racing budget is in the red, this is extra $$!). I'll try 4 mi again even if I don't race. Here's to a good week, everyone! |

Master 1696 Surprise, Arizona | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club I had a wonderful breakthrough run yesterday and I wanted to share. It was my LSD day, and I went for 8.5 miles. I felt much faster than usual, but was able to maintain the pace. When it was all said and done, I ended up with a 9:15 min average. I have been hovering around 10 -11 minues for over a year, so it felt great to finally improve. I started HR training back in December, and added some interval training about 2 months ago, so the combination seems to be working. I hope that everyone else will share their successes!! |

Expert 1022 In limbo | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Hey fellow slow buggers! I have some very very exciting news today! I am sooooo proud of myself! I ran two 15 min. miles today!!! That shatters all of my previous times, which were all over 18 min!!! Amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it (and when you have lots of extra energy/agression to burn!) Now I gotta figure out what to do about my plan....according to my plan I'm not supposed to be doing this much running for another 3 weeks, but I don't think I want to wait that long. That's another story for another post though. For now, I just wanted to share my accomplishment (and brag a little. ) |

Master 1790 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club BHannahs, that great! I'm so inspired by your progress. Although you're getting too fast now. Lil_Turtle, that is good that you were able to run more than you expected and I know you *want* to run longer, but I will echo the caution to take it easy. Your body just needs time to get used to the pounding of running. By sticking to the plan, you'll get there with a much reduced chance of injury. Consistency is the key. |

Master 1790 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club I just wanted to post about an incredibly good run I had last night. I'm in a women's beginner running/walking program, and we do walk/run intervals. I first did this 12-week in August 2006 as a walker. On Dec. 25, I started the workouts on my own to work up to jogging, and I joined the program when it started again in March as a walk/jogger. Last night was AWESOME. I felt like I was flying. It was effortless. For the first time, I actually felt like a runner and not a slogger. (The group is doing walking/running intervals, so the total running time was only 12 minutes total, but still it felt GREAT.) Starting in the 3rd and 4th weeks, we are broken into groups based on ability. I was very happy with my placement, and I expect I might be able to graduate into a faster group because I was at the front the whole night with my group. Even when we turned around to keep the group together, I worked my way back to the front every time. I would guess I was jogging at about an 11:30 pace, but I don't know how far we went so no way to know for sure. |

Elite 3020 Bay Area, CA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club 3 runs this last week. (sometimes the 4x a week is happening and sometimes not. This week was a not.) 32 min, 2 miles. 1 hr, 3.75 miles (distance is a guesstimate as I was on vacation and did not feel like mapping it.) Estimated 16 min mile pace. 2:29, 9.15 miles. 16:17 per mile. Which is not so great, until you compare my times in Feb which were more like 17-18 min miles. That pace over that kind of distance is a HUGE improvement for me. Getting ready for a 1/2 marathon on May 5. One more long run week after next of 3 hours and then we will see what kind of time I can pull out. 4 HOURS of running this week! Yay! How's everybody else doing? |

I can't imagine going that pace for that long of a distance. I think it's awesome! You'll be doing your 1/2 marathon the same day I do my first race....but mine is just 2 miles....Still excited for it though! I did 3 runs this week, each for 30 min. The first two were at a solid 15 min/mile pace and the third was a bit slower. I love that 15min/mile has become my new normal, because just a few weeks ago that would've been rocket fast for me! I've "outgrown" both of my old 30 min. routes...I used to struggle to finish them in 30 min. and now they're way too short! Anyway....it was a good week. Oh and I also learned this week that I could really use a slow buggers swimming club as well! lol |
