Pro 4339 Husker Nation | Subject: RE: IM Kansas 70.3 thecaptin - 2008-04-05 4:16 PM Is there any bike rentals in the area? If I fly in for the training day, I can't afford to do bring the bike. A basic road bike would be fine. Thoughts? Monty has too many bikes to know what to do with, maybe he could let you borrow one My wife has a 47cm trek I could bring down but I don't think that would probably fit you. |

The 20 year old Bianchi, 58cm, Champy 8 speed, crispest shift in town, down tube shifters, smooth ride but heavy @ 22 some pounds! I think my inlaws are in town that weekend and both boys have a soccer game that day, so it might not work for me heading out to the lake that weekend., however you can drop buy and get it if you want to use it. PM me for details. |

Pro 4339 Husker Nation | Subject: RE: IM Kansas 70.3 I'm so in for the May 4 training day it's not even funny. Does anybody have a clue what the water temp should be? I don't plan on doing IMKS with a wetsuit and I sure as heck ain't gonna rent one for a training day! Might just have to skip the swim if the conditions aren't safe. |

Expert 1226 Chicago | Subject: RE: IM Kansas 70.3 I'm so bummed we won't be able to make it down for the training session. Blah. I could've used the reassurance. We were in Lawrence over the weekend and had time to drive the course in our car... For the most part, it didn't look TOO bad (and I'm the wimpiest of the bunch when it comes to hills, trust me). There are enough rollers to keep you honest with your training, but there were easily 5-6 behemoth-esque hills (may as well have been a mountain) in my opinion from the flat land of Chicago. I just keep telling myself what goes up must come down. Hopefully there will be a good amount of momentum from the previous downhill to really help drive me up the next hill (one can wish, right!?). I did have the chance to take some photos while we were driving for those of you who need the visual picture. I've got a slideshow posted on my blog right now at www.runningjayhawk.com or you can check 'em out here: http://picasaweb.google.com/BarbsMarathon/Hills Just a warning, the vantage point is a little deceiving. Some of those hills are a lot worse than they look...and vice versa. I also took a video of the return back to the iron cross intersection after the first full out and back where you go over the water and then up the steep hill. If anyone wants this posted just let me know and I can do it tonight. This is also just a small selection of the photos I took. if you guys want all 60-something, just let me know. Additionally...during the drive, we concluded that we have to be careful of 3 things... 1. Roadkill (surely they'll make sure we're clear). 2. Wild Turkeys. We almost hit 3 during our drive. Seriously people. Wild turkeys. If only I was talking about the Bourbon. 3. Dirt/Mud/Crap in the road. And lots of it. I'm sure it'll be clear in 2 months (holy crap...we're in 2 months people)... Just one question...the last full out and back along 1029 Rd/E 550th...there was a point where there was construction and we couldn't go any farther. Does anyone have any idea how much further back that section goes? The road was torn up just before a series of seemingly nasty hills. Here's a photo of it: http://picasaweb.google.com/BarbsMarathon/Hills/photo#5189090101661... Thoughts? |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: IM Kansas 70.3 Yes, thanks for posting the information. Tom and I will be at the training day, even though we already registered for a Sprint in Boulder (the race director said we could apply our registration fee to next year's race, very nice). Seems the clinics and full run-through will be more valuable to us at this point in time. |

Extreme Veteran 330 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: IM Kansas 70.3 Hey Everyone! Figured it is high time I get in here and get in on some of the action! I'm from Omaha, NE and am registered for the Kansas 70.3 - it is actually the first tri I registered for. I figured I better do a shorter one first, and so I did an OLY in Texas last weekend & was happy to see I could finish Now to almost double that distance 2 months from now . . . WOW! I wish I could do the training weekend - but I'm registered for the Lincoln Half that day and a good friend is coming in town just to do it with me - so there is no way I will bail. I will keep watching for other rides though & hopefully make it out there at least once for a trial run on the bike course. Barb - thanks a ton for posting the pics! Renee |

Were there hills in those pictures, I saw some speed bumps..... Sure! Go ahead and crack on the hills we have in the midwest. But one thing you might be forgetting, coming from Colorado and such.....is that besides our "speed bumps" we have constent wind speeds of 25-30 on any given day. Today the wind is blowing at 50 MPH. |

Were there hills in those pictures, I saw some speed bumps..... Awesome! So you're volunteering for me to pony up on your back on the ride? THANKS!! I appreciate it, tiger. Gotta love how training is relative to location. Is anyone wearing a full-sleeved wet suit for the swim? I won it in the gear raffle last month, but I'm nervous about being overheated with the water in the low 70's. Good lord, I'm such a sissy in the heat. ...which makes me want to give everyone another heads up. There's essentially no shade on the bike. I was thinking it was going to be similar to the long stretch of Old Hwy 56 towards Burlingame where there's tons of trees. Not so much. Not sure about the run course. |

Lol did you look at where i'm from? Tulsa Oklahoma!! I'm so sick of this wind! It seems like its been 30-40 every stinkin day! Yeah i know i shouldn't be good at hills coming from oklahoma, but i do alot of races where i seek out the hills for better training. I also train alot by the lakes which have some pretty nasty hills. And i do alot of mountain biking which is such good training for hills. |

The big chain ring hills, mounds, speed bumps, ant hills etc. are the easy stuff, you can see them and unless you have a very, very weak bike, the duration for each climb shouldn't be longer than 5 to 7 minutes! Fear the wind, you can't see it, and it will kick your arse and mind faster than any hill around that lake! I have seen 3 foot waves kicked up on Clinton lake from the wind we get here, try swimming and navigating in that for 1 mile! |

Just look to the hill and up the right...you can see the tombstones and the stones of the "old" church. |

Love the music. And the deer...nice touch. But no. No we don't. I have to drive almost an hour to find a "speedbump" that remotely resembles a hill. I'm pretty much screwed as far as hill training goes. ...and to think that I was originally signed up for FL HIM. |
