Opened the pool today. I am SO happy I changed from that damn cartridge filter to a sand one. I simply vacuumed to waste and shocked. Pool is 95% of the way there in a couple of hours.

I did the same thing this year after talking to others that upgraded. Now for the Iowa rains to quit and get some sun. The pool temp is under 70 again. Two weeks ago we were in our pool for a few hours and then the temps dropped.

Another wet start to the day in southwest Iowa. Severe thunderstorms most of the night. Bad enough that I maybe have 2 hours of sleep. What a great way to start the work week.

MORNING TAN!!!

Yeah it rained last night and anytime it rains the manhole covers PING PING PING all night long so I got up and turned on the a/c-heat fan to drown out the sound. I didn't hear the thunder, though.

What's up everybody.

Hope everyone's memorial day/long weekend was good.

Found out yesterday that a guy who was a groomsman in my wedding (and the reason that Annie and I met) was awarded the Legislative Medal of Honor given out by the Texas Legislature. The MoH is given out once every two years and is only awarded to one person.

My buddy was killed by an IED in 2009 after saving 3 guys from his platoon.

And....I got an M-Dot tattoo this weekend too...

Same person given the medal and who tragically was killed? Sorry to hear of your and his family's loss. He sounds like a brave guy; the guy you want with you.

Good morning TAN.

I hope everyone had a nice long weekend.  Mine wasn't bad.

After living here for 10 years or so, we FINALLY decided to drive to the Grand Canyon and check it out.  It just so happens, that we drove into a "turf war" over access to the West Rim, and after driving 2 hours, got stopped at a check point and a private land owner was basically extorting $20/person to drive across his land.  The Hualipai Indian nation had access across his land without a fee for close to 25 years.  They got into a dispute and the land owner wanted to hurt them where it hurts the most - the tourism dollar so THIS weekend, he started a "toll/extortion".  I can't believe our luck.  Plus of course, they gouge you at the rim as well.  90 bucks for 2 people PLUS the $40 fee to drive across someone's property.

BUT, the canyon was pretty spectacular.  I got some pics I may post later.

Hi TAN,

My weekend was pretty much a bust.  Started out with a sore throat Friday night but I decided in my infinite wisdom that if I just ignored it, it would go away!  Didn't quite work out that way... I spent most of Saturday, Sunday and Monday indoors with poor Tony taking care of me & making me yummy chicken soup.

I'm pretty cool with heights, but I tell you, standing at the edge of a 1000' drop?  Wow...

I actually started getting anxious and I didn't know why.  I dig heights.  Then I realized what it was.  I wasn't nervous FOR ME, but there was a mob or tourists at the precipice.  Many of them trying to get as close to the edge as possible, people looking through cameras instead of looking where they are going, kids running around.

I was anxious of all the commotion so near the edge, not for myself.

I was surprised at the lack of safety (railings).  I really like the natural look, but man, it was literally a 1000' STRAIGHT DOWN if you made one wrong step.  You wouldn't even have the luxury of bouncing along the wall on the way down, it was be pure free fall till you greeted the bottom of the canyon.

That sucks.

I finally had a GOOD long weekend.

Went out with the office on friday for lunch and Star Trek.

Saturday I shoped and golfed and caught up on some stuff.

Sunday was movie day with the wife.  We say Hangover III and snuck into Star Trek Sealed.  Then went to a fantastic dinner

Monday was Grand Canyon.
