For those that have done Louisville in the past, did you have to have a wrist band to do the practice swim on Friday.  I won't be getting in until late Thursday, and the athlete check-in doesn't start until 9am Friday.  Seeing as the practice swim is from 8-10, I can't imagine that I could get checked in and still have time for the practice swim.

Not mandatory ... I went in 2007 and swam with everyone even though I didnt race that year.

This looks cool, but it doesn't look like it would be easy to track no a mobile phone.  I went to the sight and it doesn't mention text alerts or anything, just real time mapping which is great if your on your PC but that so great if your spectating for 12 hours.

I am glad someone has had luck with this company (http://www.myathletegps.com), but their website is horrendous (vintage 1988) and when I called them the phone rang 20 times before going to a private VM box.  Not  the most reassuring customer experience so far....

Maybe they'll be at the expo.

Hey all, in case you're interested, below is a follow-up on the IMLou UP run previously mentioned above by razorxp.  Like him, I've gotten to know some of the people putting this together -- great folks.

-------

DATE:   SATURDAY, AUGUST 29th
TIME:    11:00am
LOCATION:   Meet near the IM Finish area at 4th Street LIVE
WHAT:     A 2-mile easy paced run in underwear to benefit the family of a fallen triathlete

On August 1st 2009 47-year old John Carr was tragically killed during a sprint triathlon in Greater Louisville when a drunk driver hit John from behind on a closed off portion of the bike course. John leaves behind a beautiful wife Sunni and 4 children, the youngest a 5-year old son. The triathlon community in the tri-state has been devastated by this senseless loss of life. The proceeds from this run will help support the continue education of John and Sunni's 4 children.

We decided to DO SOMETHING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, so in the spirit of the annual UNDERPANTS RUN held at the Kona World Championships each year, we decided let’s relax a little before our big race on Sunday and sponsor a Louisville version of the UP RUN.

So come join your triathlete friends at 4th Street Live (The IM Finish) on Saturday.  Bring whatever donation you would like to make (cash or checks accepted).  We’ll run an easy 2 miles (total) from 4th Street Live down to the transition area and back to 4th Street Live.  If you bring extra clothes/belongings to the run start these will be safeguarded for you while you participate.   Bring your friends along.   Let’s have a little fun and show the spirit of this triathlon community.

Help us show that triathletes not only are in GREAT shape but have GREAT big hearts!

They will be at the expo and I agree their website is alittle outdated but they have a product that is 1st class.  Your best bet is to email them or speak directly to Andy.  If you want a device you will have to get it ordered ASAP as they probably will only be able to have expo pickup.  I can't wait to purchase one of these units next month as it gives my wife piece of mind while training and racing.

Correction:  I was just informed that the start location for the UP run has been changed due to a problem with intersection permits.  Everything else is unchanged.  Here is the corrected info:

DATE:   SATURDAY, AUGUST 29th
TIME:    11:00am
LOCATION (changed):   Belle of Louisville parking lot (the Belle is a boat, and the parking lot is at the intersection of 4th and River, very near the East Tower of the Galt House)
WHAT:   A 2-mile easy paced run in underwear to benefit the family of a fallen triathlete

Sorry for any confusion!

[email protected] - 2009-08-20 3:36 PM Trakkers GPS will have a booth at the expo and they have a similar technology where you wear a chip and your family can track you all day long.  I am suppose to be one of their 50 guinea pigs this year.  They may be looking for more guinea pigs at the expo.

They sent an email out earlier this week saying they would not be in Louisville now.  Going to focus on fall marathon schedule.

I talked to someone yesterday from there and they told me they were going to be at Louisville.  That is the only reason i ordered one, so i could pick it up there.

Just an FYI incase you didn't know...You have to pay a monthly fee once you buy this tracker. Like $20 a month for the online service if you sign up for a year.

We're so close!!!!!! AHHHH!!!!! Last 50 mi ride tomorrow, then finals week, (something to distract me at least).  I AM NOT sleeping well at all! I'm getting way too excited and nervous!

Short swim today. Felt great, was moving real quick and couldn't believe how short it was. Felt like I should be going longer! :P

I emailed WWW.MAPMYATHLETE.COM as I was concerned about getting the unit before I leave for Louisville, I paid online and selected "pick up at expo option" during checkout, so no worries about getting it for the race. They will be at the expo, but I'm not sure if you wait, whether they will have any extra units unless you reserve one. See you next week, Jim

Does anyone know the approximate half-way point of the swim?  From my rough eyeball estimate, it seems as if it's once you round the corner, and get just past the point of the island.  That seems to be about 1.2 miles... from counting bouys on the map (that seem to be equa-distant).

Would love a more educated estimate than that.

Yea, it will cost about $250 for the unit, $50 to activate it and atleast $20 permonth.  I am a gadget freak so compared to my other toys this is dirt cheap.  Plus I tend to ride alot by myself so it wouldn't be the worst thing to train with.  Thanks for the update though.

TRACKING ATHLETES- Although it appears many of you are interested in sophisticated athlete tracking, basic tracking will be online at www.ironman.com per their usual events without additional charge to the athlete.  The following is the response to my question regarding this matter:

Hi Sam,
Thank you for your interest in Ironman!  Yes, there will be race coverage through the Athlete Tracker available on the Ironman.com website on race day.
Kindest Regards,
Ann

Hey everyone. I've been lurking here on the IM Lou board for a while and just wanted to say good luck to everyone. I'm crossing my fingers for the weather for you guys. I'm from Louisville and the weather man on the radio just said that it's 64 right now (WOW!!!). I'll be checking some of you in on Thurs, checking you in the practice swim on Fri, checking you in the transition area all day Sat. and picking up those who can't make it on the run on Sun in a van. So here's to seeing my cheering face every day except in the van on Sunday.

Again, good luck, take it easy on the first bike lap, and soak up every minute because it will be a blast.
