I love the color of the running shoes. I did some online shoes shopping last night. My bunions are quickly becoming a limiter for me. I am going to try to stretch the shoes I have now while I look for something better. I am also thinking of cutting out a space for my bunions. Yes. They are that bad. They are genetic. My dad had them, and my two youngest have them, too.I ran on the dirt roads yesterday which were a little muddy in spots, so there was a bit of slipping and sliding. At one point I just took off my shoes and ran in my socks for about half a mile. My bunions felt so much better, but they are still a little achey this morning. /rant about disformed feet I'm a big fan of colorful shoes. :D Did I say that? I really love my neon yellow Kinvaras. I like to go out of my way to compliment people wearing colorful shoes in everyday life. As for the ladies... I'll find and marry one someday, but I don't 'follow a nice pair of shorts' during races, as it were. That's not the way I do things. Actually..."Shazam! I love brightly colored shoes" is what you said. (yes, I looked it up cuz it was totally bugging me). Sooo Yay for my brightly colored trail shoes!!!! |

Extreme Veteran 536 | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED Hi everybody! I've missed you all. Been MIA with work kicking my azz non-stop, weekend commitments, ugh. I owe a race report from Saturday but the short version is that it was a great race and I'm really really pleased with the way I ran. I did a 6 mile run before the 4 mile race because I have a HM next weekend and needed to get a long run in, so I was not racing on fresh legs. We did the 6 miles in 1 hour flat (I am a machine when it comes to logging steady 10-minute-miles). Then, my friend and I ran serious negative splits in the race: Mile 1 - 9:41, Mile 2 - 9:31, Mile 3 - 9:14, Mile 4 - 9:01. I can't believe I had the last mile in me, and then we sprinted for the finish with about 200m to go. So, although I haven't had great steady training for the half, I'm optimistic after this weekend. I'll now start working my way through all of the fun stuff I've missed over the past 2 weeks! This could take a while... |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED jobaxas - 2013-03-30 7:04 PM Ok yesterday meltdown couldn't even get on the bike felt so dumb and frustrated. Told Andrew to forget Sundays ride via text he immediately called me and said unless its peeing with rain we are riding. Gave him my address so I couldn't back out. Walked the dog cleared my mind came back and me and Artemis ride up and down the garden felt better but still very wary. Saturday night got to see Bruce Springsteen play a three hour set with no breaks at the infamous Hanging Rock. The man is still the Bosshuge respect he even played Because the Night plus heaps of oldies. It was amazing I'm still deaf! Crowd surfing Bruce so cute and that azz is as tight as ever!! Not much sleep worrying about the ride. Prayed for rain. Headed out along the footpath on my own for half hour very successful stopping and starting! And here he is Andrew he says come on into the road. I did and we were soon on a Main Street then Beach Rd my nemesis. It started to pour down so we headed back maybe only did ten km but I did it and I felt safe and I enjoyed it and I will go again. Sigh I love my Andrew piglet!!! So awesome you got to see Springsteen in concert. I saw him back in November and learned there is a very good reason they call him the Boss!! Incredible, non-stop, high activity, high energy show; a true performer. Glad you are getting a handle on your bike skills with the help of a yummy piglet, no less! Keep practicing! |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED StaceyK - 2013-03-31 9:01 AM So after 3 weeks of work being insane it should finally get back to normal next week so I will be able to get back into training. Know have 8weeks until the 12km race that I have entered and 21 weeks until the HM that I want to do. I am ok with running/walking the 12km but I really want to be able to run the majority of the HM. Can anyone suggest a good training plan? I have looked at the Jeff Galloway one (I am part way through one of his books) and I just don't really like the plan, I don't know why I just don't. I have checked out a few plans on the web but I have noticed that most of them have the longest long run as 12 miles. Why is that when the HM is 13? My thinking is that surely the longest run of your training plan should be at least equal to the race distance so that you know that you can finish it (this is especially my thinking when I have read in a couple of places that you normally hit "the wall" at the distance of your longest run). I would love to hear your thoughts. Hitting a wall is something that happens in your head (unless you've totally improperly or insufficiently fueled, hydrated, prepared or executed). If someone is hitting the wall at the distance of their longest run, it's coincidental ... it has nothing to do with the distance of the longest training run, but rather the volume and quality OVER TIME (as in months/years) of their run training. 8 weeks to 12km means it should be a training race. 21 weeks is a good time to prepare for the HM. I'd strongly recommend Hal Higdon's beginner program. The run/walk is incidental. If you can run slowly enough, don't worry about the walking. If not, then do it. If you're wanting to run the HM, then I'd do running from the outset. It's kind of silly to straight-run the majority of the HM, only to have to walk the last few km. Better to learn and do appropriate-for-you run pacing from the outset (of training, and then the race). |

I may go see a podiatrist, but I really don't want surgery. My feet have been like this forever. Literally. Like I said my two little ones have the same thing. My youngest is only 6. My toes aren't gnarly like you see in the google pictures. I can get into my 5 finger vibrams very easily. So except for the unsightly bump, my feet are quite attractive. Mine are minor at this point. You may want to see a podiatrist--it's not the bunions that are genetic, but the tendency for the big toe to deviate laterally--that makes the end of the bone push out medially, which rubs and creates the bunion. Sometimes they can give you a spacer for between your big and second toe to decrease the deviation. It won't make them better, but can help stop them from getting worse... They have calmed down today. I wore the 5 fingers most of yesterday, iced after my Sunday short run, and the swelling and redness has gone done. It was frustrating after my long run on Saturday because my legs actually feel great, only a little tired but not anymore tired than they would be after any run. It was feet that were suffering. |

Felicia, I think if it has been that way forever and they aren't getting worse, then don't bother with the surgery. If they are getting worse over time, then consider it. I have pins in my feet now, and while the surgery was not a big deal (after all, I was out cold, so how bad could it be?), I wouldn't do it unless it were really going to help. Are you sure the pain is a result of the bunions, or could it be the result of something else that is felt there? Having a Doctor take a look might be helpful though. And if he says that it'll reduce the pain, you might want to start thinking about it. |
