Os after having a relatively decent day, I got home and received a call from my dad--apparently, he visited his doctor as he has been having some energy issues--just getting really tired really easily. Mind you, my father is 74 and obese--he has type 2 diabetes, but other than that, he is actually kinda healthy--BP is awesome in fact--and always has been! Anyway, the dr said that he has an irregular heart beat and that he CANNOT exercise (no worries there, as my dad isn't too active), AND he MUST lose weight! In any case, my dad is scared, so he is actually going to watch what he eats (this has always been his MO--eats whatever until he has a health scare, then does as instructed and gets better quick--then goes right back to old ways...)but the fact that he is so scared has got me worried too--I offered him all info I have on paleo diet, as that will most likely help him--and he is actually interested, so that's something...

Please, pod, keep my dad in your thoughts/prayers/etc. as I told him, he's got to be here in May to see me finally graduate! (yes, that is what I told him)

Sigh...Sounds a lot like my FIL. Sending healthy and positive and motivating thoughts!

I grew up on Monterey, CA coast...Red Triangle? OWS scares the pp out of me! Soooo, yay for Yanti!!!!

Thanks--you know the funny thing? WAAAYYY back when, long before he met my mom, and obviously before I was even thought of...my dad was Mr. Track guy--he actually was going to go to the Olympics for the long jump--he even broke the world record at one point; sadly, it was not seen by important people and so not official..but then a truck fell on him in the Air Force and his track dreams ended. He kind of just gave up on physical stuff after that. For all my life, he's always been overweight--and until I was 10 or so, he was an avid smoker...I think that his actions are what pushed me to be more physical, just for fear that I would end up like him. He had even talked about doing the Spartan Military Sprint in Colorado with me next year--even if he just walked it and I had to help; I guess I better remind him of that so that he can be sure to do it.Smile

Healthy prayers on the way from here as well.  I hope he keeps with the healthy eating even after he starts to feel better this time!

I can see how that would be demotivating. My in-laws just left after their 4-week visit. FIL likes to talk about how active he was and all the sports he played up until 10 years ago...which is great, except he can't do those anymore and has almost no motivation unless he's around my DH. So he walks and eats right while they're here, then goes back to sitting all day and eating poorly at home. My DH gets so frustrated because he knows he can't change his dad. Would be interesting to see what kind of carrot DH could dangle. Your race gave me an idea. Thanks!

FREAK OUT in progress!!

Last week, I started training for Big Sur 9 mile.  I hired a personal trainer to help with the strength stuff and weight loss efforts.  I gave up sweetners/sugar on Ash Wednesday (so almost 2 weeks) and have been eating fairly healthy (wine on the weekends, but that was really it for slips).  By Friday, I felt like crap.  Totally fatigued, sick, sore, etc...  I talked to cutie patootie trainer guy and he suggested that I drop to the beginner running program for a couple of weeks until my body adjusts to moving regularly.  I did that and it does seem more doable.  Now for the freak out, my weight has SKYROCKETED!!!   I am up 5lbs since Friday, when the fatigue started.  I am scary close to a decade I have NEVER seen, even 9 months pregnant.

Already have the sweetners gone, so today, I go full on primal.   Is there anything else I can do?   Where is this gain coming from?   It can't be muscle, its only been a week.

I was able to find a dress for my step-daughter's wedding that has a long black skirt to cover all the dimples and dents.   I couldn't believe that in 1 month since I have shopped, my size has gone up again.   This is unreal.   I am the incredible, enlarging woman.  Must stop this.  Suggestions?

Jo, my input would be to relax, not change anything else and keep steady for a couple of weeks. Give your body the chance to "catch up" to what you are trying to do. After that, only use the scale once a week. Examine yourself at that point, analyze the food choices and the training time that you have done. If it is sensible, make 1 small change, maybe dumping a meal and replacing it with a filling salad, or adding another 30 minute workout to the next weeks training schedule. Small tweaks along the way will probably do a better job than a huge change, as those are moreover challenging to maintain over any period of time.

Good luck, the road is tough, but you are tougher!

I will try to relax. I never thought about the body catching up but I have heard others talk about it in their blogs. Today I managed to stay primal. Tons of veggies. Thanks for talking me off the ledge.

Feb 1st, gave up alcohol and chocolate - gained 4lbs in 23 days, on my bewbs!  Clearly some of that will be some kind of hormonal thing...but mainly by depriving myself of things that i enjoy I substituted with more cheese and crackers, more potato chips and more snacking generally.  So I'm allowed everything again now and already lost 2 of those lbs.  It is a mindset thing with me, if nothing is banned I relax and eat when and what I want.  I can't say I lose weight but I don't gain.  I am astonished that I can train so hard and gain weight, astounded, agog, aghast!

Ha! Lovely pod words, those last three and weight on your bewbs while others of us jiggle and roll in much less anatomically desirable areas? Forgive me while I... $#@&^*! Ok...I'm fine now.

There is a lot of info on Type 2 diabetes, blood sugar, and cholesterol improvement using a plant based diet.   I highly recommend Engine 2 Diet or any plant based diet for people who have diabetic issues on top of everything.  Not to be scary but out of all you said, Type 2 Diabetes is the scariest and could be the root of the heartbeat issues.

Keeping him in my prayers.   Hopefully, he will make some lifestyle changes.

I missed the "what is your job" thread that seemed to be going on here so I'll just respond here seeing I am giving advice.  I am first and foremost an RN.  I manage cancer research, mainly in radiation, at a large university hospital.  I have several other letters after my RN, however they are just frosting.  As I explained to my husband, when we were at a wedding with a woman who had a brain tumor, when I miss a deadline, people die.   There is NO stress to my job whatsoever.

My bewbs can't get any larger.  If they do, I'll be hitting the record books.

My weight was down 3lbs of water weight with 1 day of no grains.  I will not keep this up, as deprivation usually has the opposite effect, as you said.  Today I had Ezekial sprouted grain cereal for breakfast.  I am going to limit that to being my only grain-related carb of the day.   I am much better with limiting.   I still believe that moderation and balance is best, along with clean eating.  My problem is that if I don't "limit" I go carb heavy.   I have issues with grains, I know that.  Some people have issues with sugar, some with milk, mine is with grains.   I don't think there is a one size fits all.   Nutrition has always been a struggle.

Getting my water in has always been a struggle too. I think a big part of digestion and fatigue is my chronic state of dehydration.  I am a 3 cup of coffee/1 glass of wine/day girl.  I drink water because I have to.  I never drink soda, milk, and very rarely fresh juice (never store bought).

Healing zen for your dad.  I hope that he takes this seriously and makes a life style change rather than a temporary solution.

I tried running and hiding but it seems I cannot escape ironman Melbourne a friend kindly posted my race number on Facebook. If I decide to race the whole thing I must say it is a GREAT race number. 1800. Someone suggested I make the zeroes into eyes but my first thought was BOOBS!!!!
