I work on 59th and Park Ave. I live north of the city in Highland Falls, right next to West Point - spend my mornings and evening on a commutter train riding along the Hudson river.

Where in Iowa are you?

I lived in Iowa City for 5 years (when I went to Iowa)

That's a long commute dude.  I live in Ames, but I grew up in lower Westchester.

small world - almost like we changed places...

painful commutte, about 1:45 each way - but small price to pay as my in-laws live on West Point - so our 2 boys (ages 2 and 5) spend a lot of quality "grandparent" time.

Plus, I am lucky enough to have a job where I can set my own hours and really work from home whenever I want.  I just finished converting the basement into an office, they plan is to really switch to a home office in a few months with coming into the city 2 or at most 3 times a week.  **fingers crossed**

lisac957 - 2008-09-23 11:14 AM I don't know what to say; so bummed about JD but trying to think positive.

I know - and I JUST listened to the Lucy tribute podcast last night. This is too scary - and this time, it's someone I actually sort of "know" on BT.

I haven't been able to listen to that yet.  Today is definitely not going to be the day.

Yeah, seriously, don't. I didn't even really know Christine and I was still all teary while I was listening to it.

Don't know what all we were by, but we went to a really nice little Mexican Restaurant/bar downtown.

Yep, I've been to Bent River Brewery.  Not bad beer at all.  I just moved here roughly 2 years ago.

When I lived there, your options for Mexican was "Chi-Chis," now there is a Carlos O'Kellys - a good Irish Mexican fare...

I can recommend a place called "Marios," it is downtown near the library.  It is a total whole-in-the-wall, but they have AMAZING food.  Last time I was in town I made a special trip to eat there - highly recommend the anti-pasta salad.

Bent River Brewery was started by my 2nd cousin.  In 1999, I interviewed for a job at John Deere, staying at the hotel right near there - hung out with my 2nd cousin and got a tour of how they make the micro-brew.  Last I heard he sold his portion of the bar, but for all I know he is still the man behind the bar.

Tis a very small world indeed.  It's nice that you get to work from home a few days a week, that definitely makes the commute more tolerable.

That would make living in NYC almost tolerable. I assume they also feel they'll save on office space rent as well, right?

]

Nah!  In fact, I laughed when I read that.  I'll still have the full office here, just won't use it as much.  The other right next to mine is a pretty huge office and the attorney comes in about once every other week.  Heck, last winter she came in once in 3 months - otherwise worked from home, but there isn't a concerted effort to save on office space overhead around here.

The biggest office on the floor, which has a view up and down Park Avenue as well as full view of the old Pan AM building (think Grand Central Station) is occupied by a partner who is in the office one week a month, otherwise he travels the rest of the month (or just doesn't bother coming in to work).  He's got very gray hair, so he must be important...

I feel as though someone who was anti-pasta would not want to go to an Italian restaurant

(It's antipasto or antipasti

I just went to look at their menu (because I've been curious and always forgot).  Todd from Wichita, KS says "It's the best Mexican food north of the border".  Quite the glowing endorsement.

Where did you graduate in your law school class, dude? You don't land jobs like that in NYC unless you're REALLY good (especially as  young as you are).

middle of my class from a 4th tier law school.  (then again, my school was ranked #1 in the nation for my area of speciality, Intellectual Property Law and I graduated concurrent with my JD and my Masters (LLM equivalent)).

the trick is my background.  I have an Electrical and Computer engineering degree, with a minor in Business focusing on high tech start-ups.  And in the past few years, I've specialized in business method patents for financial service companies, consulting companies and many various high-tech start-ups.

I'd say I'm more lucky (right place right time) than good.

They are headquartered in my town - Wichita!

They're allright. Their salsa and queso are AWESOME; the rest of the food is good but not something I crave.

I went to go get some food for lunch and then bumped into the e-week tent.  Apparently they are giving lunch away this week.  I realize that pancakes and sausage don't make the best lunch nutrition wise, but they sure are tasty.

I make a very mean healthy pancake and sausage breakfast - but my guess is they aren't using my recipe.

I remember when growing up they would have pancake and sausage breakfasts on Sundays at my church.  The sausages were always weird shaped b/c they didn't come from the market, but rather local farmers would make 'em.  **full body shudder**

Pancakes = carbs

Maple Syrup = from plants, therefore good for you

Sausage = protein

Sounds like a balanced meal to me
