Awesome trail run Goosedog! 19 degrees at the start, wow, sounds like the run might have taken you through a part of Sufferlandia.

Congrats to all those that particpated in the Tour of Sufferlandia. You rock!

Just updating my logs for the week now. Got some good training in, feel like I am seeing progress.

I am curious to hear what the swimmers in our group think of the following. I had been swimming TI style for a while but like many others have been feeling like I sort was outgrowing it- just not progressing anymore. It had taken me to a certain point which was great and I learned a lot great things about reducing drag ect.

I just got Sheila Taormina's book on my Kindle and went to the pool today to practice. Just as she said, 15 seconds immediately off my average 100Y time by skipping all the gliding business and focusing on the catch. I am going to work on the tubing exercises over the next few weeks, and keep going with her pool drills.

Unfortunately, the people I know who practice the TI style don't want to hear from me right now. I'm a little mystified because when I watch YouTube videos of the great swimmers, they all seem to look a bit different in certain aspects (Sheila says that the high elbow catch is the common denominator). But TI wants everyone to do the same thing all the time and I guess I don't quite get that part. Oh well, we will see what the next few weeks of training brings.

Fred D - 2013-02-03 1:16 PM Question for the group?? What angle do you have your saddle at on your tri bike? Ie; how much downward does it typically point or is it perfectly horizontal?

Mine is pretty much perfectly horizontal.  It's going to be slightly different for different people (but within a pretty narrow range for this particular aspect of position).  Slight down is OK, but if you feel like you are slipping forward it is too much.  Good fitters that I've talked to say more than 2 degrees downward tilt and there is a problem somewhere.

bzgl40 - 2013-02-03 8:34 AM I have biked my way out of Sufferlandria.  My legs are still shaking.  9 straight days of intense trainer rides.  I do not recommend it.   I'm glad I didn't give up on it though (although I had to talk myself into staying on the bike for the last 20mins).  Time to bring back the run

Nice work!  I finished it up this morning as well.  Most of the rides were done at 95-97%, but I managed to convince myself to go for 100% for this morning's ride.  It was full of suffering, but I managed it pretty well.

The Tour of Sufferlandria was a good challenge, and I'd definitely do it again, but my legs are looking forward to a rest day tomorrow!  Planning to do another 20 minute test on Saturday to see if I've made progress since the last time I tested.  If nothing else, I think I'm mentally stronger, having finished the tour!

Nice job.  I am super impressed given that you accidentally signed up and did it right after knee surgery.  I'm going to retest as well when the legs feel a bit better, but I agree on the mental aspect regardless

10K pr in the bag     Both primary goal sub 50 and secondary goal of sub 8 average met, 7:54 per mile average.  After the race, ran/walk back along the course to meet my wife who was walking the 10K and walked back with her.  Overall about a 9.1 mile day

Later got in a 3K swim workout which was much harder than I thought it was gonna be.

Very happy with the run, though, 3:20 improvement over prior PR at this course last year (and 20# ago.)

It's a snow day here today.  We got close to a foot of snow in the last 24 hours and the wind is supposed to pick up later this morning so it might get messy.  Having clear sidewalks to run on was short lived.

I must say, I am pretty happy to not have to get on that bike this morning.   When I was up in Flagstaff there were many folks out running and biking.  Lots of folks biking along Lake Mary Rd, which is a really popular biking spot there and despite having finished the tour earlier in the morning I did have slight twinges of wanting to be out there, despite it only being 44 at the time

Great news Chris!

Saddle tilt for me is 0...flat, flat, flat

Trainer tires? I've got Gatorskins and like them very much - the transition from trainer to road is easy peasy, and they seem to hold up pretty well on the trainer. I haven't had a flat with them yet (I've had them for about 20 months).

Have a great week everyone!

Really dumb

I decided to get up and do my long bike ride in the early morning. I bundled up Florida style (I think it was 30F) and took off. I felt pretty ok until mile 9 and then I noticed my feet were getting kind of cold. Two miles later and I was in agony. I took my bike shoes off and tried rubbing them. It didn't help much. I tried to solder on for another mile or two, but then I decided that it was time to accept my poor judgement call and head home.

On the way back there was a slight cold head wind. This succeeded in freezing most of the rest of me so that when I got home I was a total mess.

After soaking my feet in warm water and taking a hot shower, I was still shivering a bit.  I never never never want to ride with frozen feet ever again. horrible!

Thawed out now but tired. I think I had my shoulder tensed from the freeze pain.

Making me consider my clothing for the March HIM. The lake temp will be around 60 and after a half hour swim at around 8 a.m. the weather has the potential to be warm or chilly. I have no idea what to wear.

30 degrees, that's a heat wave compared to New England. Yestredays ride was 24 degrees and the run at 32.  Make sure your feet and fingers are protected as well as your chest.  If you went out at 30 degrees, the wind chill you created brought the temp down lower than that. Need to stay healthy.

Finally a better run than the last two weeks. No cramping or pain in the legs. Just a tough two miles in from being so cold. The old bones didn't want to  move at all. Had a little advice from my swim instructor on Saturday and it worked. Wasn't sure if I should have gone out for 20 with the race two weeks away but needed to prove to myself I could make it.  Now it's time to slow down and get things ready to to go.

You think maybe the second bolded part had something to do with the first?  Wink

Nice job in the race!  3:20 improvement is huge.

That and the swim workout he did is freakin' hard no matter what!  It would put a hurt on me no matter what, nevermind running a 10k earlier in the day.

Chris, congrats on the PR.  AND maintaining the weightloss. That's huge, especially post holidays. Great that your wife was out there as well. Is she still training for the half? If my addled brain is working (which is often questionable), it was the same weekend as Wildflower.

Happy Monday!

I was happy to get out on the bike this weekend. My foot is healing nicely. I will hold off on the running and swimming until after I get the stitches out next week. My family are sharing a mean little head cold though, I felt totally flat on my ride Saturday and had the sniffles by Saturday night...been pretty lucky this winter though, considering I work in a school, so I guess it was time that i got a little sick.

Congrats on the races, bike suffering and surviving the cold weather!

Fred D - 2013-02-03 1:16 PM Question for the group?? What angle do you have your saddle at on your tri bike? Ie; how much downward does it typically point or is it perfectly horizontal?

Using the Cobb Vflow Max...actually angled ever-so-slightly upward per their website recommendation. While this does relieve some of the weight from the arms/hands, I am not sold on this set up. It's not bad, but I am not completely comfortable. I originally had it angled a bit downward (before reading the installation instructions :) but felt like I was sliding forward off of the bike and onto my aerobars. I am actually tinkering with this now (will likely bring it to a level position), so the timing of your question is perfect.

You can tell the season is slowly creaping up on us, as there are suddenly lots of congratulations in order to the Utopias!

First, you Sufferlandians are nuts! If I were you I would be trying to score the sufferfest "dark side" kit for my area before someone else does. You have earned it.

Excellent job on the PR, Chris - I thought you might be a little conservative on you estimate - you have a lot faster in you still.

Goose, awesome trail run, despite not face-planting. Especially nice job on your buddy - he earned that podium spot fair and square. Course and situational awareness is an import discipline in all endurance sport, even more so once you take it off road. If you ever give adventure racing a go I think it is THE MOST important skill to have of all. All the running, swimming, biking, paddling, climbing, treking etc. is included just to disrupt your spacial and situational awareness....

Kev, I am betting you do just fine with a two week taper - you will probably never go back to a three. You are going to do awesome - now all you have to do is survive the taper madness....

very nice work on the pig, Michael - we do two every spring: the faculty do one and our students do one (the kids pretty much do a mess of it) and in my experience 6 hours is a very good time, and dam-straight I would log it. Lets see some pics of that thing!

Fred, my seat on both my road and tri bike are dead-level. But one of the most jacked-up seats on a bike I have ever seen was on a young pro named Nick Waninger. The nose of his saddle could not have been pointing further down. Funny thing is that we met him because his seat was so messed up - we were walking in to a breakfast joint and his bike was parked outside. A friend I was with started talking to him about his wacky seat angle, and for some crazy reason he liked it that way. The next morning he went 2:58 at the Augusta HIM. I guess it takes all kinds, but I think he is a waaaaaay outlier.
