It's definitely harder than I thought.

But it is so worth it.  Stick to the training and you'll do great.

Haha... I was freaking out soooo bad before I "ran" my first (and only).  The training even almost had me depressed because of how slow I was going and how sore I was.  The farthest training run I got in was 18 miles, so I definitely didn't see how I could go another 8.

Turns out, that race day was the most fun I've ever had at an event.  I still think about it just about every single day.

What are the stops like for this one?  I haven't seen one that didn't have plenty of fluid and food, so a fuel belt might just be extra junk to carry around.

There are 12 water stops and 3 food stops.  I'll probably bring some of my own food because my stomach gets grumpy and I'll allergic to some food.  Not sure if I want the fuel belt or not though.  It's such a pain to carry for long runs.

I'm going to get a 15 min massage at lunch time today.  My company hired massage therapists to come in and give chair massages, they are picking up part of the bill, so we only have to pay $12

pretty cool!

barqhead - 2008-09-18 10:50 AM I'm back! It was an ok run. I could definitely feel a difference when I'm running down hill. I'm still pooped after the tempo portion of the run. My right hip feels a little odd, but I am ultra-paranoid. I did all my usual stretches. I guess my body will have to adjust to this new position. Good news is no blisters or rubs and it was a 6 miler

nicely done Pam!

So much to catch up on...so little time (gotta go teach again at 1 - and NO, I did not nap before my morning class)...

Glad the run went well, Pam!

Massages sound great, Beth!

Run run run, Jen! (I'd do the fuel belt, personally - but I kind of love mine.)

I'd like to think that when I run a marathon (hopefully spring 09) it will be as good as an experience as Bill had. So if it was so great, how come you've only run one???

Two reasons:

1.  I found out they were planning a HIM in New Orleans, and that has been my goal race since June of last year.  That's on 4/5/09.

2.  As Jen was saying, the training is a lot harder than you think it is, and you already think it's going to be bad.  I really did get moody, angry, irritable, and I was always sore.  The only reason I'm considering doing another one is because of how awesome the race day was.  I'm already planning on running the MS Blues Marathon in January 2010.

I always plan the water and sports drink stops into my race nutrition plan (how much water/sports drinks to be taken at which stops).  I don't carry a fuel belt with me on marathons.  But I do wear a race number belt ($12).  In my race number belt there are a row of loops, almost like an ammo belt.  I stick the gels that I need into the loops, with the loops wrapped around the middle of the gel packet.  Can't rely on gels being at the aid stations until the last 10 miles or so, and by then it's too late to convert any of the gels to energy for the body.

Just my $0.02.  Do what works for you.  Gels aren't palatable for a lot of people...

That's really helpful.  I was planning on carrying food because I always want it earlier.  I like gummy things like sports beans and sometimes gels.  I was going to get a fuel belt race number belt and a pouch to hold all my crap in.  I figured that would work.

I am hoping to be able to rely on their water stops, though.  I really don't want to have to carry that much.

Just a plain old race belt and some rubber bands works.  You can attach a few packs of those sports jelly beans or something to it and just break the rubber bands when you want some.
