evondo - 2010-02-09 5:56 AM Happy Tuesday everyone! Just when I thought winter was gone and done with, 40F w/20+mph winds this AM.  It was quite chilly jumping in the water, took the whole warmup to get warm.  I'm guessing most of our northern folks all have indoor pools that they go to? Anyone else swim outside in the winter?

The pools our masters group use are outdoors. We've had some chilly mornings, ice on the deck and kickboards frozen together. Once we finish the workout we all pile into the hot tub before darting into the locker room. I'll take outdoor swimming any day, the humidity of the indoor pool is a killer.

As for the houstonites of the group, the humidity outside in the summer would be higher than that of an indoor pool gym.

Thanks for clearing that up.  I went in a different direction a la *drag suit*

evondo - 2010-02-09 1:06 PM Great suggestion! We used to do this for swimming, put some holes in the suit and wear it on top of your normal suit for some extra drag

roadrhino - 2010-02-09 10:43 AM For an even more fun swim workout, turn it in to a drag suit...then you never have to say goodbye.

Newtons1st - 2010-02-09 10:38 AM wow that is a long time to keep one. Give it a proper burial in the back yard.

bzgl40 - 2010-02-09 10:18 AM I have to retire my favorite swimsuit today  It has finally seen it's last swim.  It's a sad sad day.  It's my go to suit when I feel like I'm having a fat day (even though the scale is the same ol' same ol').  We have been together for years and years.  Salt water is not near as rough on a swimsuit as chlorine.

I'm a California girl, humidity takes me down. The one indoor pool I swim is heated up in the mid 80's yuck. I'll take cold ocean water any day.

Hooray 1000 posts! And I get to share this special milestone with my wonderful mentor group.

I am sure we have outdoor pools here but I'd have no idea where they are.  I am 10mins from an awesome community pool.  It's hot, around 80 I think, but I think for what they do there that is reasonable.  I have no idea what I am about to face when I move.  It gets pretty chilly in Tucson until the sun comes up in the winter.

On a none tri note..... It's amazing how things can change in little over a year. When my wife was 21 weeks pregnant with our son, we were asked if we would consider terminating the pregnancy. We were told our son may not make it due to tumors which were on his lungs causing his heart to shift in his chest. We begin to hold our "collective breath"..........

Everett was born, had the lower lobe of his left lung removed at 2 months, and is now 1 year old today and perfectly healthy.

Happy Birthday Everett!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently for the tri in May it will be wetsuit legal and apparently the lake never gets to be too warm so I'm going to have to start looking for a wetsuit.

Betsy0706 - 2010-02-09 11:00 AM If I can do it - anyone can do it!  I'm certain you will be fine.  In May - will the water be wetsuit legal?

Cool about the bf's hobby.  I always admired people who can see a potential shot in everything!

Emmanem - 2010-02-09 9:29 AM Happy Tuesday!  I definitely swim indoors but over the weekend my boyfriend wanted to go take pictures... He got a fancy camera over the summer and loves taking pictures and then messing around with them in photoshop.  He's taken some really pretty pictures and I'm usually the camera bag/lens cap holder lol.  Anyway we went out to the lake where I'll be swimming for my tri in May.  I've been a little scared of the thought of an OWS for a while and the first thing I see when we get out there is a sign informing me 200 people have drowned in the lake. How very uplifting!  Then we walk out on a little dock and I realize I really don't like open water at all.  I mean it is really pretty scary to me... so once Clemson gets some nicer weather I have a fear to conquer!

So, after a really hard long workout how do you treat yourself?  For example, when I was training for marathons I always had a Snickers bar after my long runs (I think I waited until they got to 12 miles).  I always carry a summit bar, which is just a chocolate bar (usually Snickers) that I eat only if I summit whatever mountain I am tackling at the time.  I broke that rule once and ate the bar after a very bad and miserable attempt at a mountain once.  We were all so miserable I said screw it, I am having my bar now (after we turned around).  I perked up immediately

So, do you treat yourself to a special snack, or a beer, or even maybe a message?

It's not a routine thing, but sometimes to help get me through my workouts I will bargain with myself. Usually nothing too bad, but for example, during today's swim I kept promising myself a gas station cappuccino post-swim. It was a nice treat. Otherwise, I usually have a peanut butter and banana sandwich with chocolate milk after a hard workout (mostly after longer runs).

I wish money were no object because I would definitely do a weekly massage if it were possible. I think I'm going to allow myself a massage once a month, though. And, as hard as it is for me to believe these days, I rarely have the desire for beer or any other alcohol, so I drink very little. My 25-year-old self would be aghast at the 32-year-old me. Laughing
