I'm still struggling with ows, and really I have nowhere to practice so it is just something I will have to gain confidence/experience over time. My knee problem on the run returned this race as well. All in all though still very happy with my race. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Congrats to all the racers. Awful experience on my run this morning. I went down a road I've run many times and the temp was about 72 but the humidity was 100% or close to it. So I get about a half mile down the road which is about 1.5 miles into the run and I'm already soaked when I start to get lit up by horse flies, mosquitos and who knows what else. Because my shirt is so wet and sticky they're able to land on my back and sting me. So it turned into a mad sprint to get off the street while at the same time trying to keep them off my back. My pace wasn't all that fast but my heart rate through roof as I was waving my arms, slapping my back and pretty much using the form from hell as I went along. When I got back to the Y I took my shirt off and from shoulder to shoulder it was just giant welts. Some were bigger than a silver dollar. My neck and upper triceps had a few as well but man was my back destroyed. |

Sorry to hear about the fact that you can't find a place to practice OWS. I can empathize with the getting used to it part. Swimming is my weak link so take this with a grain of salt, practicing in OW does help. Gives me that, been there done that, kind of mentality. How far away from a lake or something are you? |

Member 216 Haymarket, VA | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Here's a question for each of you. If you had $100 to spend on anything you wanted what tri specific thing would you suggest? A little background, my wife has been bitten by the fitness bug based off all my progress and work. In order to motivate herself a little more she sets a goal each month and puts up $100 of her own money towards that goal. If she meets it, she gets to pamper herself with the $100. If she doesn't meet it, I get the $100 to spend on whatever I want. This is her first one in three months she hasn't made. Obviously I want her to do well with these, and honestly would prefer that I never get the $100. I figure getting something related to triathlon might be a good option so as not to rub it in her face that she didn't make it this month. Off the top of my head I can't come up with much in the $100 range, but I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I haven't considered that y'all can suggest. Adding her money to my own is an option to purchase something over $100, but I'd like to avoid that. |

Unfortunately in the Northern Virginia area, a public lake where you can swim is at least an hour away. There are a few private lakes that are closer, but you have to know the right people to get access to them. There are some pay sessions at some other locations around the area, but basically nothing even remotely convenient. |

Regular 211 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Originally posted by ccmpsyd Wait....define sore...cause after my 75 mile ride yesterday my legs were kinda sore/heavy....isn't that normal (I hope)? A little soreness or heaviness like you describe is normal (for me at least), particularly on the day after. I often schedule my rest days after long rides for exactly that reason. My situation this week was more intense - sore as in "first-long-ride-back-after-two-weeks-and-a-bout-with-stomach-distress" sore. Now that I've gotten a few workouts in I'm starting to feel a little better, but I hope I get back in the groove quickly. September's coming quickly. |

Running shoes, cycling compression bib, swimming clinic to have stroke evaluated, deep tissue massage, aero drink container, entry into a sprint, new bike seat. If you don't have one I'd wait three months and get a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. Other than my tri bike probably the best ROI of anything I have purchased. |

If you're set on getting something for 100, then I'd get a video of your swim. TI clinics offer just the video option, and then they'll analyze what they've taped. The trainer has biggest ROI for me, too. I wouldn't be able to participate in triathlon if I didn't have it. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Anyone wear arm warmers or gloves during a race? If there is a high in the 60s on race day, I think it's going to be pretty chilly starting off on the bike. This past Sunday I left the house for an outdoor ride at 6 a.m., and it was 51 degrees. My toes were ice blocks in my cycling shoes, and my hands were so frozen that I couldn't pull out and squeeze my water bottle. LOL I had to come back home after 2 hours and change socks because my feet were so cold. Just looking for some advice for MT. |

Yeah, that's the problem I'm having, like you said, $100 is a really tough price point. Thanks for those suggestions. New running shoes might be a good option. How long do y'alls typically last for you? I got this pair at the beginning of the season, but they still feel fine so I don't think they need replacing just yet. I already have an aero drink container, an adamo race bike seat, and I'm registered for all the sprints I plan to do this year. My wife actually is a massage therapist so she'd kill me if I paid someone else to give me any sort of massage. In fact I'm due for my post event massage tonight. The swim evaluation would be nice, it's definitely where I struggle, but the masters program I'm in does that kind of already. I'd definitely like to upgrade my trainer. Right now I just have a Travel Trac Comp Mag +. I think for now I'll either have to bank the $100 towards something bigger, or maybe stop by my dive shop and see what I can spend it on. |

If you want the aero drink system get it or the shoes. Otherwise bank it. My shoes typically last 300 miles or so. |

I wore arm warmers, gloves, socks and to covers on the shoes. Just pack them in your T1 bag and see how you feel when you come out of the swim. Just remember you're not going to get anything back that you drop of put in your special needs bags. |
