Really wanted to get in a long run yesterday but between heavy deadlifts Friday afternoon and spreading 8 yards of topsoil in my yard yesterday, my back wasn't having it. 90 minutes on the trainer this afternoon.

45min in the pool. Should have gone for a MTB ride tonight but it rained off and on all day and I really didnt feel like dealing with the muddy aftermath.

Mitch and Jackie, Nice job last month. I was waiting for Gabe's update, but saw he is in Korea, so I don't think it will happen.

I will start this month off 53:43 runch.

Jim - Thanks. I suspect Jackie will update and be 1st on the podium this month. You had a strong month as well!

This turned out to be a better month than I thought it would be. I hit 500+ miles (across all discplines) for the 1st time in my training career. Also, 4 of the last 5 months have been highest volume months ever for me. Finally, this month was the highest TSS month ever for me. I remember mid month really dragging and needed to look at my training data to understand why. I think the last 7 months are tsarting to grind on me a bit. Last couple weeks have been a bit lower intensity and volume so I'm hoping to come back with some intensity and better balance this month.

Still haven't decided on a race for late summer. Looking only at HIM distance. I floated idea of Barrelman in Niagara as it could be a destination for my family to check out the falls and me to race. Other option is your race, Jim.

My apologies for being mostly missing during the month of May. I started my bike tour of Japan as planned on May 10. I ended up with 22 days in May and a total of 114 hours of training logged. That is far and away my best month ever. Of course almost all of it is cycling. To date on the tour, including a ride on June 1, we have ridden 2075 km and climbed 18,790 meters. We have been getting mostly great weather. Once we are done I will find some way to share highlights and photos. I am doing some updates on Facebook and if anyone is interested, send me friend request (Dan Conway in Sendai, Japan) or pm me your iFacebook ID.

I will try to send a few more updates in the next couple of weeks and should be back to normal in mid-June.

I need some help. My race is on Sunday (sprint) and it's supposed to be open water swim. Well with all the flooding there's too much water and that brings debre. Until further notice all the lakes are closed including the 1 we're supposed to race on. The race just posted that they are looking to turn it into a run bike run. Now given that the open water swim is really my favorite part what recourse do I have? Do I just go along with the race and do my best at 2x running (I hate running!) or is there an option to move my race entry to their next race which is about the same race but in July?

Thanks,
Beth

Beth,

I'd contact the race director and see if hey'll let you move the entry to their race in July. It will probably be completely at their discretion as I imagine the raceyou entry waiver you signed allows them to make changes to the format, etc.

I've never run a duathlon but if you have to I would suggest pacing the first run slower than you think necessary and save whatever legs you have for the final run.

That depends on the race director and company running it. Some will offer you a refund or entry into another of their races, if they are reputable. If they are not reputable they will give you the choice of running the race or not running it, but either way they are keeping your fee. If you really don't want to do a duathlon, I would contact the race director and see what your options are.
Another thought is a duathlon is a great way to start your season and build for your next race. Consider making it a long brick and a training session and not being too serious about it. Especially if you hate running, it will give you time to embrace that part of the sport you like the least.

The wife an I were suppose to compete in a Olympic relay a couple of weeks ago and as you know the weather has been reeking havoc on us. A storm rolled in right at the start and they not only cancelled the swim and made it a run/bike/run but they also dropped the Olympic down to a sprint. We were just thankful the weather passed and only delayed the race by 45 minutes, we still able to compete. There was talk of refund and deferment before the start but the race director quickly got out her megaphone and put an end to that kind of talk real quick like! As we waited the 45 minutes I would say probably close to a third of the athletes grabbed their bikes out of transition and went home. Worked out for the wife and I as we took 1st place in the relay. GO POLAR OPPOSITES!!

I'm happy the rain has finally moved on and sad to see it is still effecting our weekend plans!!

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
