Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Let's talk running shoes. Specifically, do you train and race in the same shoes? I currently train and race in Asics Gel Cumulus. I've been using them since they were version 8, currently at 14. I've also experimented with Kinvaras but never fell in love with them (although they feel great to run in). I tried on a pair of Zoot Ultra TT 5.0 at IMMT last year and they felt fantastic and was thinking of trying them for races (haven't bought any yet). I'm wondering though if I were to try them and like them, would I be better off just using them all the time? On sale, the cost difference isn't all that much but I would have to rely on buying them online rather than locally. So, what do you guys and gals do? Edited by axteraa 2013-02-04 5:03 PM |

![]() I train in Mizuno Wave Riders as well as Saucony ProGrid Rides. The only time I would race in either shoe is for a marathon. I'll race (HM and shorter) in KSwiss or Zoot shoes. Can't remember which models, but they are not minimal shoes or racing flats...still have some cushion, but a tad bit lighter. Maybe around 9.5-10 ounces compared to 11.5-12 ounces for the training shoes. I love running in my training shoes...the cushion helps. I tried doing a 30k in my KSwiss shoes and my feet were not happy the last 3 miles. I think I need to lose about 20-25 pounds before starting to train/race in racing type shoes. |

I have racing flats that I only race in (other than maybe a race prep or two where I wear them in marathon training) I have a very diverse rotation going. All of my shoes are minimal in nature but vary widely. I've got some Nike Frees (a couple versions) some Brooks PureConnects, NB Minimus, Nike XC flats, Brooks Green Silence and 2 pair of trail shoes (One North Face and one Adidas.) My racing flats are Brooks T7s. I never wear one pair twice in a row. I just feel like shoe companies are constantly changing their shoes so I hate to rely on any one specific make and model.
To answer your question, I think you can do whatever you would like. I think it's good to have at least 2 pair just in case one gets really wet or anything. Shoes are pretty personal and what I do (/my apparent shoe obsession) may not make a lot of sense for everyone.

I was an Asics girl for many years but switched to Zoot last year and love them. I wear the Zoot Energy which works out great as a tri race shoe (no messing with laces) but it's also a great everyday running shoe. My husband has the Ultras for racing/track workouts but he prefers the Energy because the Ultra does not have enough cushioning, sometimes his achilles hurts if he uses them too much. He also runs on trails a lot and the thorns go right into those soles. I just picked up a pair of Nike Free but haven't been able to run in them yet until I get the stitches out...will let you know what I think. They are super comfy to walk around in! If you are interested, contact Bryan Dunn to see if he has a discount code. |

I actually like the idea of running in different shoes every day! But I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet. Thanks for all the thoughts so far, keep 'em coming. |

![]() | ![]() I train in Mizuno Wave Riders and race in them as well. Unless I know I am doing trail then I have Brooks Cascadia. I'll use the Mizuno's on trails but they have a big opening on the sole and pick up big rocks rather easily and it drives me crazy so if I know for sure it's all trail for me I stick to the Brooks. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() RE: run - I have gone from Asics Nimbus (too heavy, at least several years ago) to Zoot Ulta Kane (absolutely loved them - perfect IMO) to KSwiss Kwicky Blade Lights (loved them - but they wore out too fast, around 250 miles) to KSwiss Blade Max (great shoes, but also wear quickly, around 300 miles for me). However, I just ordered a paid of Nike Lunarglides because they were way on sale, have gotten good reviews for larger runners pike me who keep up decent mileage, and I got them with the "shield" reflectivity. I am paranoid about being run over. I race and train in the same shoes simply because I don't race often, and when I do, I don't want to "discover" a new blister on race day. - Brian |

![]() | ![]() Sorry to hear there are a few more among us not feeling well, rest up and get well soon. Awesome snowshoe race Salty! I forgot to mention a few posts back with regards to puncture resistant tires I have had good luck with Schwable tires in addition to Gatorskins. If I remember correctly they were a bit cheaper too. As far as running shoes go, in the late 80's I was a Brooks and later Asics. I had a pair of Sauconys too, but way too Squishy. In the 90's I mostly ran in Nike's until I had a work injury that ripped a muscle in my right foot. I wore only Addidas trail shoes and New Balance for several years afterwards. I ran IMLP 2 years ago in KSwiss, OK but nothing spectacular. About 6 months ago, I put on a pair of shoes in the Brooks Pure line. I was instantly impressed I think I wore the shoes in line at the register as I did not want to take them off. Ran 3 marathons in them this fall and they are awesome! So here I am full circle 25 years later back in Brooks, I could not be happier with a pair of running shoes! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've never raced in shoes other than those I've trained in. I drank the koolaid and switched to Newtons last year when I started running again. Because my mileage is pretty low the change wasn't a big deal. Im quite happy with them so far. I used to run in Saucony Hurricanes. Not really sure why as I don't overpronate and they were prob overkill re stability. |

Shoes are pretty personal and what I do (/my apparent shoe obsession) may not make a lot of sense for everyone. I'm sort of the same way. Pure running races are definitely in flats. I'm not really obsessed with shows -- more like I don't really care and buy whatever reasonably light neutral shoe is on sale. Right now I'm rotating between I think 3 or 4 pairs. For the run of a HIM or IM I usually wear relatively new Kinvaras -- they are pretty lightweight, but a bit more cushion than true racing flats. In a sprint or Oly I'm more likely to use the flats, but I've varied that sometimes, for no good reason.
Oh and that 1-2-3 is pretty awesome. Nice job! Edited by Experior 2013-02-04 8:14 PM |

I generally train and race in the same shoe, but I save one pair specifically for races. That way I'll know they're in good condition and they have the speed laces on them. I like knowing exactly what to expect in the feel. I'm very sensitive to a lot of things, so want predictability. Even though I can adapt, it takes a little time and I don't want that in a race. I will have a couple other types for different situations. Most of my running will be in a rotation of a few pairs of one type. Treadmill will be on something thin & flat. Then also trail shoes. For the past few months I've really gotten into Altra shoes. Using the Instincts for the main running, the Superior for trails and weather conditions, and the Adam for treadmill. I still have some Kinvaras that I'll rotate in every once in awhile on an easy run. I do notice the 4mm difference in those after doing so much with 0. |

I have read establishing body position, but... Yesterday's set had some 25s with a band. Didn't have one, so just crossed my legs and was good about not kicking What's the best way to get use out of band drills? Am I supposed to be able to esablish proper body position without kicking, and if so, how? Chris, One thing that I found helped gratly with being able to swim with a band, as opposed to just hammering out 25s fast enough that I could keep my feet at the surface, was that goofy video Fred posted last year. I'll dig up the link but it talked about some drills and what muscles should be used to bring hips and feet to the surface. Shane |

I'd say it's a bit of HTFU but you might want to just back off your power targets a bit so you set yourself up for success for a few rides. Once you get back into the groove (mentally and physically) then go back to the higher wattage and see how it goes. |
