Have a couple half-marathon's on the schedule coming up.

Kansas 70.3 in June.  IMLP in July.  Planning to really focus on keeping weekends stacked with training for LP.  Will do the fun stuff ( Olympics and TTs ) in August/September after LP.

Might squeeze one more race in there before LP in May, but we'll see.

Not a race, but signed up for the LP training weekend put on by Jorge and company in June as well.

Ryan (yeats) and I are doing the American Triple-T in Ohio in late May. It's 4 races spread out over 3 days: super short sprint day 1; olympic in AM of Day 2; run-swim-bike olymipc distance in the evening of day 2; then a HIM on day 3. Should be great training for IM!! And we get to race as a team, instead of against each other

Now that sounds awesome!

You should come race with us! It is supposed to be insanely hilly

PennState - 2010-03-23 6:24 PM Harryman is soooo much more hilly than LP, that I'm actually not sure it is great prep... it's not bad prep, but the hills that I have heard about at Harryman sound much more intense than LP. Then again, Eagleman which I'm doing is hardly great prep, so what do I know ???

I wanna be over-prepared for the LP Bike course, ...like that's possible!

And you obviously know a little of what you are doing based on your last two finishes at LP.

I'm doing the NJ half marathon in May, Mooseman 70.3 in June and hopefully a couple of sprints and 5k runs sprinkled in between.

TTT is no joke, and a lot of people suggest it is harder than IM.  Looking forward to your race report!  Get in some hills, bring the right gears, and get a fullsleeved wetsuit!  HFP does a great job at their races, so Im sure you will have a blast!

Thanks for the info and welcome to the LP thread!

I did Black Bear... somewhat similar to Harryman in the hills before LP 2008. I had a mediocre race at Black Bear, but when I did LP I realised that Black Bear was a totally different kind of race than LP... just wasn't good prep for me.

I guess I should say the course wasn't good prep, but doing an IM is always good prep in some ways.

I've heard the same, from JK, that Black Bear and Harryman bike are very similar.  Why was it not good prep for you?  Are the hills too aggressive climbing compared to LP?  Perhaps a rolling course would be better?  One would think Eagleman (pancake flate course) would NOT be great Prep for LP, but apparently based off your results and others, it's fine.  Go figure.

LOL! You guy's are funny!

Riding hills is excellent bike specific strenght training regardless of the course profile of your race. It doesn't matter one bit if it's during training or during a race, it is race specific preperation. Period. Stop over thinking that and just get out and ride, ride a lot, ride hills, ride flats, ride a bit harder in general.

exactly. When I was planning to race LP my "prep" race (more like pre IM fun race) was Eagleman which is known to be flat and fast. Not specific prep for LP but I wasn't going to get that from 1 race anyway and that wasn't my goal; my ability to adapt and increase my cycling fitness was going to come from riding and riding and riding: long, short, hard, easy, uphills, downhills, in between, etc.

Register now to make certain you get a spot.  The combined field for the Olympic and HIM is 400.

I think that is what I was trying to say... that a very hilly course is not a great prep...

No! A hilly course IS great prep! So is a flat one ridden at tempo. It's all great prep. There is no course specific specificty of fitness as long as you ride on varied terrain in training. If you live in Florida and are racing IMLP then you might need to make adjustments to your training to simulate the effrots associated with climbing but that's just a measure of intensity.

Yeah, a lot of us are doing Eagleman 70.3. I am debating doing a 40K TT bike race as well.

How many of us are doing Eagleman? I'm registerd and had decided to drop, but then dropped New Orleans 70.3 so now I'll do Eagleman. Of course I have nowhere to stay yet and it's my b-day weekend so I need to get it all figured out!

I'm also doing IMWI in September. Anyone else racing after IMLP?

I see what you guys are saying.  It reminds me of what swim guru Sara McLarty always says: Swim all different strokes.  Even though we only swim crawl stroke in a race, it helps to become a well-rounded swimmer and swim butterfly, backstroke, do drills, kickboard, etc...    The same with biking, I should do my drills, and bike all different terrains, and the combination of all that consistent training will make me a more well-rounded cyclist who can fair well on race day, regardless of the course.

And having said all that, I'm off to Bike right now.  20mph winds out too, YAY!

Funniest thing just happened, I had to share.  My wife ordered Girl Scout Cookies.  I kindly asked her to 'please hide them'  otherwise I will devour a box at a time.  So I just pulled out my Perptuem and Carbo-Pro cannisters from the shelf and a box of thin mints fell from on top of them.  Yah think she coul've found a better place to hide them then on top of my bike nutrition!
