If you're swimming in Mirror Lake in the next week and a half, watch out for an extra number of kayaks and canoes at certain times during the day:

Canoe/Kayak     -     Junior National Team Training     -     June 19 - July 5, 2011

The US Junior National Canoe/Kayak Team will be in Lake Placid training for a few weeks in preperation for the Junior World Championships.  You can find these athletes paddling on Mirror Lake (middle of town) in the mornings and afternoons.  For more information please contact the Olympic Training Center at (518) 523-2600.
http://www.teamusa.org/about-usoc/u-s-olympic-training-center-lake-placid/events-programs

No big deal, just be a little more cautious out there.

I have been following Matt Fitzgerald book for the most part for my training.  After my long ride on Sat. (which went great) I had a long run Sunday morning planned.  I felt fine all day and Sat. evening but when I started my long run Sunday AM, I knew I was cooked.  My other long runs of 16 miles + have been in the 9-9:20 range, Sunday morning after 6 miles I moved up to the 10 min. range.  I quit my workout right then, which was around an hour.  I decided to try to rearrange my schedule run my long run today (Thursday).  I am now glad I did.  I had a good 18 mile run and felt strong most of the run.  Took the last two miles kinda easy to use as a cool down.  I am glad I decided not to push it Sunday and risk injury or severe demortilizaiton (hehe).

pee wee - I have been feeling a little of the same recently.  Lots of training plus the humidity really kicks in fatigue.  I took advice from people on this thread and mates who do this crazy thing (very well).  If you are having a bad training day, do not push it and risk injury…  Come back the ext day stronger and put in 100%.

Lake Placidtomorrow…   Can not wait.  Getting at up 4am to drive there.  Looks like typical Scottish weather too.  doon….   Best place to be – in the pub.

See some of you in the Brewery (and the SBR course over the w/e).

"Manos de piedra"...not!

Screws now in both hands.  Gives a new definition of Ironman.

Surgery went well...still hoping/praying to race.

Aw man you weren't kidding - Glad the surgery went well and hope you recover fast! I was googling some rides out on the eastern shore and saw something about a drawbridge so decided to stick around here...

Nice Rumpus shirt by the way, I have the same one!

Did I completely screw myself!?!?

So I'm a college student and I go to school out near Chicago and do most of my riding and running in Northern Illinois and Souther Wisconsin (pretty darn flat.)  I was getting really happy with my long rides and runs.  My last long ride in the area was 6 and half hours and I was able to go 125 miles (about a 19.5 mph average.)  And my last long run was 2 and a half hours and I was able to keep just about 7:04 pace.

I did Kansas 70.3, did well, the hills weren't that bad and I ended up going 4:55.  (Bike: 2:39, Run: 1:33)

BUT I get back to NY and I'm completely off!  My zone 2 for running which used to be around 7 min pace is now around 7:30 and my I can't even get over 18 mph average for my long rides (longest I've done since home was 5 hours)

I'm a light rider and my FTP was 4.2 watts/kg the last time I tested (about a month ago.)

So basically am I screwed for Lake Placid??

PLEASE STEP AWAY FROM THE LEDGE!  You are merely experiencing the sub 30 day IM freakout!  Very common.

Are you screwed?  Of course not.  Unless you bet a ruthless mobster $100k that you would qualify for Kona at LP you are not "screwed".

Do you need to adjust your goals to accomodate the hills?  Probably.

But with your HIM and training times you are clearly a talented athlete and I think you will be fine as long as you go into the event with the right attitude and expectations.

Just my humble opinion.  Try to relax and enjoy the ride as there is nothing you can do now about the hills!

Good points guys...I feel like I have no idea HOW to even run at a good clip anymore.   I have been doing my long runs on tuesday and doing a long brick (with only a 4 mile run) on Saturday.... so I know I am not doing the running-on-tired-legs thing too well but I just feel like this is the best for this getting older body (I have been running for 20 years with the only break about 4 weeks after two c sectionsSmile and for a torn hamstring in 2009)

I really appreciate all of the feedback and encouragement I realized I freaked out a little and I just needed to step back for a minute. Adressing my HIM pace, I've been doing most of my long runs with the majority in upper zone 2 and 30 minutes in zone 3. For my half I did the first 10 miles in 7:02 pace and completely blew up for the last 3 miles. I didn't take enough fuel in at the end of the bike and didn't feel comfortable taking any gu on the run. I was planning to have my half marathon time under 1:30. It just didn't happen in the last 3 milesSeriously everyone thanks for getting my head straight I'm currently pumped to hit the hills hard, they used to be my favorite part.

Yeah, you freaked out. Sounds perfectly normal for someone preparing for a 140.6 mile race. Yeah *gulp* one-Hun...hundred-forty-six miles. OH MY GOSH. OH MY FREAKING GOSH!!! So, ummm, yeah -- I personally have never freaked out. But I supppppose it's normal.

Curious to know how everyone's training is going this weekend? Peak training weeks!

Today I did a nice 5 hour hilly bike with 4400 feet elevation gain!  Then I knocked out a speedy (for me) 45 minute run averaging 8:30 min/miles.  Tomorrow I have a 2 hour run with some 800 pick ups thrown in for fun

Not only am I working hard physically, but I'm focusing on training my mind too.  Since my LP camp last weekend, I needed to come up with some mantra's to tell myself when the going gets tough. Today, every hill I encountered on the bike and run I said "I am strong"  And it worked!  I felt strong, especially on the run.  Does anyone else have any mantra's?  I'm thinking that on race day on the run mine will be... "You are an Ironmaaaaaan!!!"  Happy Training!

hey man,

you unlikely "screwed yourself"

that said, your logs are empty, so its hard to say.

My first question would be how you determine your training paces/zones and why run for 2.5 hours at your HIM run pace?

bike speed in training, IMO is fairly meaningless, unless you can dupilcate the wind conditions every day and/or you do the same route very often.  Plus, with so much stop and go, it is easily manipulated.......

run training for ironman is not aerobically limited, so dont be so concerned with getting that aerobic feeling during your runs......

past week was recovery for me , really took it easy because sat was 85 mile ride, sunday tough trail race totaling 16 miles.... so i followed up by only doing 6 workouts last week instead of 8-9!OMG i feeel fresh and ready to tackle this peak week!

I have a mantra when i get nervous on screaming down hills "I am in control!"

My new one i hope to remember for race day "This too shall pass"

20 mile run on Saturday. Went pretty well and legs feel good. Took a couple walk breaks, nothing more than 30 sec or so. I usually walk a bit through aid stations anyway, especially late in a race.

Made what may have been a strategic error yesterday; I looked at a graph of my planned vs. actual training since early March. Notice anything?

The error was looking

I missed a chunk of peak time due to injury, and have been ramping back up. I feel pretty good now, not 100% but better, but seeing those huge gaps is disconcerting. I never should have looked.
