Thanks John. Interesting to see the differences. I believe that BT is Friel. I'm adding in Skiba's view because it is also different. I'm not currently using HR, but these line up with corresponding power zones on the bike which I am using and pace zones on the run (which I have not really looked at yet) . I swam, biked and ran, but probably that is not so special. Maybe I mentioned this last year, but maybe not. On Valentine's Day in Japan, men receive chocolate. It is not unusual for a male president of a larger company to get 100-200 boxes of chocolate. Those crafty Japanese business folks came up with something they call White's Day on March 15 when women receive white chocolate (more expensive here). |

Master 1841 Sendai, Japan | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN -CLOSED DUE TO TRAINING I learned something today about my bike fit and figured it might be worth sharing: I noticed a couple months back that my right leg tends to collapse in toward the frame when I get fatigued. This is something I did NOT notice while riding outside or while riding on the trainer last winter. Anyway, after doing some research and finding information about varus/valgus, I dug out the shims that came with my Specialized shoes. Yesterday I put one varus shim into the right shoe and rode for an hour. The problem did not appear during the ride, but by the end of the ride, the top of my foot near the big toe was feeling kind of numb. I decided today that I would try a thinner shim (not knowing that I only had one size shim). I pulled out the insole and stuck my hand into the shoe to get the shim....I came out with two shims and one was a valgus shim. I don't remember it being put into the shoe, but I am pretty sure that valgus shim was inserted during the quick and dirty fit I had when I got shortly after getting the bike and the bike shoes (3.5 years ago). It was not checked during two subsequent fits I had and the funky right leg behavior probably did not appear during the brief trainer rides I did for those fittings. I thought about it for a couple of minutes and reasoned that valgus+varus = no shim. So today I rode with no shim and it felt great. My legs felt more relaxed and I am pretty sure there was less rocking going on up at my hips/butt. Of course, my imagination may be playing a role here, but I am guessing this is a pretty significant find and I wonder if I really ever needed that valgus shim.
The moral of the story from my perspective is that a good fitter should start from ground zero and know whether or not you have a shim in one of your shoes. You also need to be riding hard enough for them to see what happens when fatigue sets in. I'm optimistically hoping this is going to allow me to push harder on the bike and have fewer problems with my knees/hips. |

I went out and rode for an hour or so before one of my fittings and we worked with about an hour on the legs of good riding.
