December will consist of rebuilding run volume starting with shorter runs, but more frequency (5x per week). Bike and swim will be maintenance with 2 trainer rides and 2-4 swims/week depending on time. January starts marathon training. I'm going to use Pfitzinger's plan that caps out at 70 miles/week if I can stand the volume. Its a miles/pace plan that I'm tweaking for time/heart rate. If I lock myself into running X miles at Y pace I know I'll just run flat boring routes to hit goal times. And life is too short for boring runs.... I Know that this is not the smartest plan to get better at tris. I should be working on my weaker bike, but I'll work on that in the summer (with a bunch of racing mixed in, of course). Happy training folks! I have done that plan for the marathon Bill and it is a good plan. One thing I did the year I used it as the run training part of my IM plan was to replace the recovery days with swim and bike, or shorten the runs and bricked them off the bike. I am fortunate that I am an early riser so doing a 60 - 70 minute bike then running for another 45 or 50 minutes in the morning before work fits my schedule. It also helps that I only have a 20 minute commute. I'm glad you liked this plan. I really had no basis for choosing it since I have no experience with running a standalone marathon for time. I'm an early riser these days, but I would kill for your commute. If they would let me bring my bike and trainer on the train in the morning, I'd be set... Your marathon must be in May if you are starting that in January? You will have a huge run base at that point, and if you hit the 2 times a week of swimming and biking you won't be in great shape, but it won't be bad either. Especially if your early season tri's are sprints or oly's. Plenty of time to build the bike for at least the one HIM that I know you are registered for. Maybe there are others that I am not aware of. Yes, May 5th for the mary. My schedule is peppered with sprints and an Oly. I'll probably add some sprints, but here's the tentative schedule. I'm bolding what I consider the 2013 'A' races, or goalposts. As for HIM's I've got Peasantman, maybe Hunter Mountain in September, and the SOS Tri. The SOS isn't exactly a HIM, but its a comparable difficulty. This is all perhaps too much information, but I'm already getting giddy about next season... 02/23/2013 - NJ Trail Series 50k - Maplewood, NJ - REGISTERED |

I was on a 3 day backpacking trip the weekend before the race. I had a lot of people passing me as they ran down the trail. On a side note, we also had a bear run right next to our campsite the first night. Scared the heck out of me. I couldn't believe how loud it was. I've seen them before in the woods but the sounds he was making (grunting and just bashing his way) left me a little freaked out.....

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: Kenj - triathletes in training CLOSED Adam, no I never did the escarpment trail race. I never heard of it until this Summer when a guy from my swim group did it. He did IMLP in 11:xx and runs a 1:30 HM, and it took him 4:3x do do this 18 mile race so I know i need to take it seriously... it crosses 3 peaks from Wyndham to Hunter, but if you hiked it, you know better than me :-). I wont even know if i am in until June. This is organised very old-school. You have to send them a stamped envelope that they send applications in at the end of May, and only 200 entrants can race it. I've never seen a bear in the wild. It's something I worry about when on a trail with my dog, but if I see one in a race, I'll just hope I'm faster than the next closest runner... |

With even 200 people on the trail I doubt you will see a bear. Last year when I had my bike race in the Yukon the day before when were scouting the road we saw quite a few brown and black bears along the side of the road. The day of the race while I passed tons of bear scat (which is wild to see!) on the road never saw a bear (of course I was toward the back of the race too!). Trail running in the summer I have to be pretty careful, so far only moose though. If you are worried run with bear spray and make lots of noise - that is what they say to do here. |

Up until recently I was stuck on getting the new Cervelo S5. But, I recently saw a BMC TMR01 and was pretty intrigued! Anyone have any thoughts on the 2 of those? Also, have any of you ridden the new electronic shift? I'm really torn as to whether or not to go with that or stay with the old mechanical and upgrade wheels and get a power based crank. |

I have heard good things about the S5, but I am not familiar with the BMC. As far as the electronic shift, I have thought seriously about doing it on the tri bike, just to have the ability to shift from the horns, plus I would assume the missed shifting and chains falling off might be minimized avoiding lost time. For the road bike I didn't think it offered a lot of advantages. But I typically use the road bike for more social type rides and don't push the pace or track a lot of data when on it, my main objectives for the road bike when I bought it was weight, (yeah I know, I could afford to lose about what the bike weighs), and comfort. If I were to start racing the road bike in some capacity, my priorities might change. |

haven't thought of it that way.....that's good insight. thx!!
I mainly use my road bike for late season training and social time as well. While I'd still like the power data you're probably right. Seconds saved on shifting vs the hassle of a battery, limited adjustable system probably outweighs any benefits. Money is probably better spent on PM and wheels. Those are more visible in cool factor anyway! LOL |

"Long Way Down" it's about 2 guys (one of them being Ewan McGregor) take a motorcycle trip from England to S. Africa - it is a mini series with each episode a little less than an hour. They also did Long way round (England to NY). Don't know if you can stream, but it is worth renting. Edited by robingray_260 2012-12-06 11:07 AM |
