I need some advise on structuring or restructuring my upcoming bike workouts.  THe next 3 sunday workouts call for 3:30, 4:00 and 3:00 rides.  I will be out of town and will not be able to do the 4:00 ride.  I may be able to do an hour or so on the trainer wHen i get back into town late sunday, but knowing me, that is a long shot.

I know missing a workout is not the end of the world, but wonder if I should change up the rides around the 4:00 one.  In other words, should I make the 3:30 a 4 and the 3:00 a 3:30 or both of them a 4 or just keep things the way the are?

Thoughts?

So I have been thinking about this...

I am just curious, where are you at in your training plan and what is the longest ride they have you do?

From what I have gathered, T.I.T.S. is where it's at when it comes to improving on the bike. Unlike running, cycling doesn't seem to put the same stress on your body so you are able to do more of it (See TDF.) I am thinking because you are not an inexperienced cyclist, you can probably go ahead and do more on those other two rides (maybe feel it out but shoot for 4:00?) and then just do what you can on the trainer when you get back.

I'm guessing you can't really rearrange the 4:00 bike ride because it's just too hard to get that much done on a week day with work. Is that correct?

Disclaimer: I'm a runner. The bike shop had to call me to tell me I have nothing left in terms of break pads and I just about ruined my rims.

i am on week 14 of a 22 week plan (of course I started on week 7 ). 4 hrs is my longest ride and the plan has me doing a 4 hr ride the 3 weekends before the race.  So, I'd be missing 1 of 4, 4 hr rides.

You're right, no way in hell I'd be able to fit a 4hr ride into the middle of the week.  I may be able to do more time on the trainer for the already scheduled mid-week rides, but it will be hard.

Holy crap! Awesome. Those are beautiful pictures!! That suspension bridge is really cool. I am a little terrified of heights but I love those things. There is a cool one up in Vancouver. Right Kirstin?

Also, I have google+ but have never used it, so, thank you for that, too Smile

Google+ would be really cool if it worked in Google Chrome. I can't get anything to open properly, but it may be my settings.

and if more people used it. Silly that it doesn't work on Chrome. That is very Microsoft of them

They were late to the social net party, so they lose there. The MS comparison is right on indeed. Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing in sooo many tech companies, especially big ones. Heck, we have 10 people in ours and we can't get through the easy stuff, so I guess I see how it is possible. But it doesn't make it right.

Yup.

Another alternative is to do somewhat more than 4:00 broken up (like, 5:00 broken up into 5 1-hours or 3 1.5 hours, etc) ... but to do them REALLY UNCOMFORTABLY hard.

You probably won't die if you skip it altogether either, provided you're doing most of the rest of your workouts in the long-term.

Yeah, don't think I can add any more mid-week rides, so guess i'll just up the weekend rides around the miss.

You can recover faster from the bike than the run.

I wouldn't miss the ride myself.  I've been giving it some thought since you posted.  I just feel that you cannot make up the long ride or long run.  If possible, I'd move my long run to a weekday and get the ride in.  I don't think that you necessarily accomplish the same thing when you break up long rides.

What are your goals for this race?

I'm out of town that whole weekend, so moving the ride to Saturday won't help.  I can't blow off the weekend trip because it is a family obligation, so I just have to figure out how to limit the damage of missing the workout.

I haven't really set a defined goal for the race, but i'm thinking a just sub 3 hr ride would be about right.

That's weird. I can get into G+ with Chrome on my Mac.  Maybe it's a setting or cookie issue.

I can get into it, but it hangs up when I open my albums. They open fine in IE. I think you're right though, it may be a setting. And I know my Norton is working overtime on every button that I click on this laptop, so that may be getting in the way as well. I'm going to test on my big laptop.

And a big "THANK YOU" to Janyne for pushing me into settings to fix my Chrome issue. I take back anything bad I ever said about Google. It was Norton that was getting in the way.

bcraht - 2012-08-27 5:26 AM Having a blast watching IMC--on the side of the highway about 20 km from the bike finish.  Home for lunch now, then heading into the finish to watch until my volunteer shift starts at 9pm.  Have done a nice run along the Kettle Valley Railway trail along Skaha lake as well as a couple shortish OWS.  Staying at friends 5 acre home with horses to help with and chickens to collect eggs from and fruit to jam.  I am in heaven.

OMIGOSH that guy I call Spiglet who comes and lurks about in here is doing IMC -- his bib number is 656 in case you check this before you go! His name is Mark Spadoni.

goooooo spiglet mark!! Was tracking him this am. Hows he doing now?

Been going steady at about 20mph on the bike. He SAID he was going to take it easy ... although I suppose for him, a 6-hour IM ride would be.

Thanks all for the support.  And yeah I did ride easy ... proof:

143 watts = about 60% of my healthy ftp, maybe 65% after my medical issues.  Just don't tell my concerned family about the 50mph descents

Edit: and yeah I can ride sub 6 hours on 143 watts.  Good position on my bike

I use Spotify at work sometimes.  Mostly I listen to podcasts (Two Gomers right now, as a matter of fact) but if I am editing web pages for something, I use Spotify for background.

Basically, I set up some favorites and I let it shuffle through that list.

I have one playlist that someone in a previous mentor group suggested.  He wanted for all of us to set up a playlist of our favorite workout songs.  I entered my spin songs in there.  I don't think that anyone else in the mentor group ever bothered.  Oh well.

So anyway, I use it but normally less than once a week.

Oh that is a good idea!!!! I was kind of thinking of something along the lines of that but it would of course depend on people's actual use of Spotify.

I am a Pandora user as well but Spotify is amazing for sharing music.

I am trying to fit a bunch of Pop Tarts (a slightly bunch less than I received, but still) into a suitcase. I even bought a new suitcase for them!

It was all going really well until I remembered I'd also bought myself five new pairs of running shoes.

They were $25 apiece. It pays to live in a country that manufactures a lot of the top-brand sporting shoes.

Portions are chip seal but not all of it.  You won't need a mountain bike.  But it helps to adjust your position during the race and sit up when you have a tailwind.  The course is 100% flat and your neck and arms WILL hate you if you don't give them a little recovery.

Hi guys.  Drive by post.  Life is very, very, very, very (get the picture) difficult right now.  My son is hospitalized right now.  He's been in the hospital since Friday and we do not know when he will be discharged.  I'm burning the candle at both ends and am beyond exhausted.  Any good thoughts/vibes/prayers you can spare would be appreciated.

Win some lose some. There were many times in the U.S. I simply couldn't find shoes that fit, period. I just ran out hundreds of miles in whatever I had, tried to do shorter runs in almost-but-not-really fitting shoes, and hoped and prayed that asics wouldn't totally eff up that year's lines like they did the year before.

I was thinking about it today. When I was young, it was really easy to find shoes that fit. It was after I'd been morbidly obese and pretty inactive for years that, even when I lost the weight, my feet stayed horrifyingly pronative, big, and flat.

And now that I've been active for a while, have been barefoot or at the most in thongs for over three years and all the soft-sand running I did for about a year ... it's a huge blessing to be able to have my pick of shoes, and here of all places where I can afford all I want!

P.S. I even have a pair of shiny RED Mizunos and PURPLE New Balance!

ebshot - 2012-08-29 2:54 AM Hi guys.

So much love to you, Erica ... and as always, prayers every single day. Many of us will make it a point to check in on you often.
