Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Well, I was supposed to do a ride today in addition to my swim this AM. Fought with myself all afternoon as my body was telling me I should rest, but I didn't want to wuss out on the ride. So I made myself a deal. I either had to go for a ride, or I had to finally have flat practice. So I watched the video again a couple of times, and practiced about 5-6 times. Had a bit of a struggle figuring out how to avoid having the tube pinched right at the valve stem, but figured it out (without wrecking any tubes...). Last two times I did it I was in 5:00 and 4:30 (not including getting tire back on the bike). I was pretty happy with that. I figure front tire won't take more than a minute to get off/on, so I should be able to get that under 5min. First flat I ever had was on the back tire, and I had a heck of a time getting it back on after the LBS changed the flat, so I will be spending my practice time with that little task... |

Wasn't too hard was it! I had the same issue with trying not to pinch the tube around the valve but worked it out eventually. Can't say it's my favourite thing to do but I'm glad i know how to do it - kind of like CPR it's good to know but you hope to God you never have to use it! |

Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD So the rest of the week for me has to include the following: Swim +30min Bike (Wednesday squad then trainer) That leaves a 90min ride....I am out Friday night when I would usually fit that in. So my options are probably early morning Thursday or Friday - yikes, have to be on the bike by 4.15am in order to get off by 5.45am so I can shower and beautify before work..... Oh well! I think Thursday morning will be the go. |

Extreme Veteran 536 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD rrrunner - 2012-05-14 12:30 PM Well the race organizers still don't have the results posted so I will give you all a couple of hi-lites/lo-lites. During the run I got the dreaded side cramp. Was fine up the first hill (I practice those) then when it started to descend the cramp struck. So pulled out a little WWCD, some WWSD and a lot of HTFU put my fingers in my side and kept moving. My time did suffer some, but I'm happy I kept moving. The bike was pretty un-eventful. Then on the swim (this is a reverse tri) when I jumped in I think I was still winded from the bike and run in to the pool so I couldn't get into my normal breathing pattern. About 25 meters in (50 meter pool) I pulled out some WWYD and some HTFU, got a grip and forced myself into my normal breathing pattern. Once I got that it got much better. I liked the 50 meter pool because I could get into a nice groove (maybe even some smooth) before I had to stop. I actually passed people in the swim!!!! (granted some of them were doing some very... um unconventional... strokes. Thank you Yanti and Salty for being in my head yesterday! My total time was just under an hour and a half and I am happy with my progress toward my A race in 4 weeks! Oh and my runner-son gave me some ideas for getting rid of those stupid side cramps. Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD RE. HYDRATION: just a few thoughts ... on long runs, some folks stash water bottles at convenient locations. I can't deal with handhelds or a single big bottle, but I loved having two 10-oz bottles. Also experiment with where the belt is--early in running I could wear one around my waist, but in later times I had to have it around my hips. Try the belt on in the store--amphipods are great as you can adjust where the bottles go, but I hated the belt. (Etc.) Fuel belts bounced too much and I just couldn't get the bottles out of the way of my elbows. I finally settled on Nathan, and I loooooove it, but everyone will be different. It's true you should focus on hydration the days BEFORE a long training session and especially race ... it's even truer that you should ALWAYS focus on hydration. If your body doesn't need it, it will pee it out. But it's very hard to tell if you're just a bit sub-optimally hydrated ... but it does affect your training and racing, perhaps without you knowing it. My policy is to try and stay as hydrated as I would be if I had a big session/event coming up. Random thought re. LONG COURSE TRAINING: long bikes and runs tend to be scheduled back-to-back days on weekends for convenience. It's actually better to have long or hard sessions separated as much as possible. Another possibility is to do fewer long sessions, but load up more on volume during the week (if schedule allows). Key long bikes and long runs are always necessary ... but, for example, many (even competitive) marathoners do not ever have a LONG long run (longest 13-15 mi). But they have a higher overall volume and very carefully scheduled/crafted/executed short/medium/etc. runs. |

Mostly you just have to try different stuff to see what works for you. I inhale deeply (very deeply, as deeply as I can visualising pulling air all the way down into my legs) and run stretched more upright for a few strides. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD cggale - 2012-05-15 3:38 AM Sounds like everyone had a good weekend. Congrats to the Manatee racers for meeting your goals!! I am pleased to say I completed my goal of finishing my first OLY last Saturday. I got through the swim which always causes anxiety. The water was in the mid 60s, so a wetsuit was recommended. I have to admit, I really like the wetsuit. For slower swimmers like myself, it really does make you go a little faster. I was really pleased with swimming 1640 yards in 35 minutes. The bike was a bit of a struggle, but I can't complain too much. I thought 1 hour and 25 minutes wasn't too bad for 25.6 miles. I don't know my run split because it was never posted, but I figured it was at least 53-54 minutes. My overall time was 3 hours flat and 56 seconds. I finished BOP but I was really proud that I finished and it was a lot of fun. I got to see my sister kick major a$$ and get second overall in the ladies!!! She did it in 2 hours 20 minutes!!!! Amazing! I just need some more T.I.T.S and I'll be ready to conquer my HIM in June. Hope everyone is having a good day. I did a small swim after work and plan on spin class this evening. The girls are home from school. Time to be a mom. CONGRATULATIONS OLYMPIC DISTANCE TRIATHLETE CLAIRE!!! always difficult to face a new distance and you executed very well. And yes ... we could all use bigger T.I.T.S. |

Short version: What do you use? Long version with background information: I almost always don't bring anything with me. I go the extra effort to hydrate really well at a minimum the day before and morning of (and then of course afterwards). Most of my routes pass a water fountain or two (which I use) This actually ends up being pretty race-relevant as most of the events I run offer water every 3-5 miles or so. Generally it's not a problem unless I am going over 18 miles or so. If there is not a water fountain I just stop and buy a bottle and run with it. It's not much different than a hand-held in terms of feel and inconvenience, plus when I am done with it I can toss it rather than carrying an empty bottle around with me. *If I am on a trail and there isn't water access I would just run with a disposable bottle but if you don't have anywhere to dispose of it, this is where a hand-held might be handy (get it? ha-ha) I love my Nathan belt that hold 4 bottles, but I only use 2 at a time. For me, it's psychological. If I'm running more than 10 miles, I just like knowing its there in case I feel thirsty. I had a single bottle belt and HATED it, felt like I was pulling a freight train with 20 oz. hanging off my back. I can't tolerate holding water bottles in my hand, it messes up my rhythm. I usually wear the belt on my waist and keep it nice and snug so that it can't move around, and I haven't had any issues with pilling. It sounds like a belt isn't your style, but you might like a multi-bottle belt better than the single bottle. Maybe the droopiness of the one bottle in the back was a problem? And I agree with Salty, the same brand with probably have the same sip-top. |

If I recall right, we're not only dragons, but Fire dragons! Sweet! I am free of school and work today, but unfortunately I have to spend the day writing 5 final papers. Ick. I am still coughing up lungs (you would've thought I'd have run out by now, but no...) but apart from that, I feel great. Good thing too. One of my major races is coming up on Sunday--the Auburn Sprint Triathlon--a somewhat difficult one (I did the mini last year), and also its my 1st anniversary tri--as that mini was my first tri EVER! So I am looking forward to it. Funniest thing is, I went to the swim portion on Sunday--and it doesn't look nearly as far as it did last year (despite there actually being even higher water levels!), so that's a nice little confidence boost! Okay, time to knuckle down! See ya all! |
