I even secretly thought I'll be looking fine in my dress, new hairstyle and all but now it's a disaster. Despite trying all the medicines and thinking it'll be all ok I woke up today feeling like crap

Sorry you're sick... hope you can try to enjoy the occasion.  Take it easy and relax if you can.

On another note, I just had 2 days of hard workouts and good eating and managed to gain a lb... how does that happen?????  Can I blame genetics?

Well I didn't manage to run 2 hours because I misjudged the distance I had planned.  However,  I did reach a goal that was more of a "I could never do that!".  I ran over (barely) 10 miles in 1:45 and I can truly say that I never really thought I could/would.  On top of that I get to turn 52 tomorrow.....yipppeee!

My wonderful wife got me a Truck and a TIMEX MARATHON watch,  how cool is that?  It even matches my red running shoes.

Saling - Anything that matches your shoes has just GOT to be cool.

Cead - Dope yourself up on some heavy duty cold meds and enjoy yourself as much as you can.  I totally understand the sick thing though it's NO fun.

Hi :-)

I need some weight training Ideas. At the moment I am doing calf raises, Squats, overhand rows, underhand rows and an ab routine that targets upper, lower and obliques. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should add or what I need to be focussing on more? I though it might be a good idea to put in a little more work on my legs, I heard that will help prevent injury and at my weight I need all the help I can get in that department :-)

Thanks Roni,  I love my truck, but the watch matches my shoes....WOOHOO!!

Kiwi,  What kind of squats?  If they are explosive (coming up on toes) That should give your legs a good all round workout.   Then add some hill training and legs are ready to go.

cool, I'll try that, the squats I've been doing are deep (thighs parallel with the floor) and with a 10Kg bar, but otherwise fairly sedate. I'll put a bit more oomph into it :-)
Cheers

Hi Team Skinny,

Been off the scale and internet all week. Please don't give up on me though! My goal for March is 184. Weighing in now at 186.6 (AGAIN)! I am getting frustrated at how things are going weightwise, yet somehow my blue jeans are getting baggier. Joined a class on how to run a 5K and, with some instruction, proper clothing and a new pair of running shoes I have managed to increase my running time from running 6 minutes in a 30 minute walk/run training session to now doing 1.7 miles nonstop. That feels good, yet would still like to see the scale numbers drop. Ah well. Anyway, hope to do better with both the weight and internet time this week.

Good job on the running flex.  Nothing wrong with walk/run.  I pick a street at some point and I look forward to walking across it.  I limit my walks to crossing the street, but it seems to help me keep going.  Don't let the number on the scale depress you if your clothes are fitting looser.  You are probably gaining some muscle and rearranging your body composition.  It WILL come off, be patient, watch how you are eating,  eat some more protein, keep checking in and asking questions and for gods sake don't QUIT.

kiwikowgirl - 2008-03-08 2:49 PM Hi :-) I need some weight training Ideas. :-)

We do some good leg stuff... squats, but with the most weight we can manage, only 3 sets of 8.  Box step ups holding a bar on our shoulders.  You can do these stepping forward onto the box or sideways.  Split lunges with the back foot on the step front foot forward.  Walking lunges are also good.

Hope that helps!  I know resistance training has really improved my power and strength this winter.

The dreaded plateau is here!!!!! I knew it was coming, I tried to prepare for it, tried to talk my way into focusing on the loose fitting clothes. But who am I kidding...I want to see the silly numbers go down too!!!!!! I lost 2 pounds a week, for 8 weeks...it was like clockwork...now I have been fluctating up and down around the same weight for the past 3 weeks. How long does a plateau last?? I journal my food every single day so I know its not what I am eating and I havent slacked off on my training. I guess at this point I should just stick to the plan and wait it out...but its so darn frustrating..when will I get over this silly little plateau!!!!!!!

Whew....had to get that out...thank you for listening

tmason:  There are parts of this site that those comments "resistance training has made me better" are fighting words.  Not here though,  I love resistance training especially bodyweight exercises.

Makukula:  Sometimes it helps to get through by 1) Drastic change in diet for a day or so and or 2) Do some High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).   Just for a few days and you should break through and be back to your normal self.

Hi Everyone, I survived the wedding and on the plus side I didn't drink due to being sick. Unfortunately it doesn't look that I'll be able to go to the gym tomorrow or even Tuesday but I'll try to mind my food choices at least.

Saling- happy birthday!!!!!

Hope Everyone had a good weekend!

My swimming can only improve!  At the pool on Friday I was watching this guy swim effortlessly in the lane next to mine.  He didn;t even look like he swam, just gliding in the water....sadly for me, I don't glide

You may not glide now - but if you work at it you'll get better and better.  My best tip is to focus on ONE thing at a time.  You can't work on your catch, your elbow, your rotation, your glide at once.  Pick one thing, do some drills, then swim some straight sets, then drill again and swim again.   And really focus on whatever you picked.  I think that's the best way to get better.

I glide really well toward the bottom of the pool or lake.

I will work on a new avatar with my "new" color scheme.  I sure did like my black look though.
