just this short clip. But you can see the effect of the tide on the speed of the pack if you look at how fast we go by the kayack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaI40uwFWJo&feature=player_embedded<...

You guys were FLYING! Wow!

I sent off an e mail requesting a spot on the bus. Are they supposed to get back to you, or do you just assume everything is ok?

A woman named Jennifer should respond fairly quickly. I asked for three more spots for the cruise just this morning and she replied within an hour. I decided to drag my whole family into this Ironman affair. It will be the first race they ever see! I actually like to go to races alone, because then I don't have to worry about anyone else getting up in time or whatnot. I figure they should come see me do the ironman.

there was no warm fuzzies to be had in the swim. Or for the first 65 miles of the bike ... nothing but frigid painful cold. Actually, compared to the first 3 hours of the bike, the water was warm ... but not fuzzy. Hoping for warmer temps this year!

Yes, me too. I bought neoprene booties just in case, and am packing some ski foot warmers to put in my bike shoes in case we have cold temps. I hate cold! Another tip I got from reading some race reports was not to use the wetsuit strippers if it's cold. Just keep your suit on, because the run to T1 is pretty long, and that was the coldest part. (also why the neoprene booties will be good!)

15 new messages?!  Wow, we must be racing soon!!  I watched my husband race last year and it was very easy to get around.  You can easily walk down to see part of the swim or bike down to the swim start and be back in plenty of time to see the finish.  From there we went to the battleship and hung out for the day - we even toured the battleship!

After seeing all the folks with frozen feet trying to run the long run to transition I am all about some neoprine booties!!  If the weather is like last year I will have my shoe covers on for the beginning of the bike too!!

Coldfire: I don't think you need to worry about the bus if you have a ride. Since it's free, why not make a reservatoin anyway, just in case your car breaks down and your wife can't drive you!?

Good point!

As to the booties: do they hinder you while swimming? (I presume you wear them during the swim)

I've only tried them once without the wetsuit. I hated swimming in them that way. My feet floated up too much, as compared to my legs. I haven't yet tried them with a wetsuit. Will let you know once I do! I have been wearing the booties while taking ice baths. Makes it much more tolerable, because otherwise, my feet get wayyyy too cold.

Here's a link. I also bought the skull cap. I did a race in the spring where the water was 63 deg. I ended up not using either the booties or the cap and felt just fine. The air temp was 70, tho. I will probably only use the booties if the air temp is cold at B2B.

OK so I've been planning on getting the booties since I read race reports last year (so since 11/08...) soooooo I guess I should actually get them now!!!

And yes, I too, got a pretty quick reply about my reservations for the bus etc---if you don't get something just try again---Jennifer seems pretty on top of things!

Last year, it was unseasonably cold that day at 37 degrees that morning. Even by 9 it was still just 46. Very cold to come out of a swim and onto the bike!

The average temp for Nov 7th is 48 deg low/ 71 deg high. If that's the type of day we get, it will be 55 degrees when we exit the water, and I'll be using arm warmers and newspaper stuffed into my shirt (ala, tour de france). Those things will be easy to peel off later on. Of course, who knows what the fates will deliver to us this year!

Keyone, thanks again for the link!

I ordered the booties yesterday, and they should arrive on Tuesday. Plenty of time to get in several OWS with them for a test run.

I am also planning on putting on arm warmers in T1. Easy to peel off if need be, and they also double for "long sleeves" on the run if it is still cold.

I've used wetsuit booties made for triathletes many times in swim when the water is under 60..I had no issues at all. I could have sold many many pairs the times I had them. I bought mine from Promotion.

I'm reading your thread seeing how you guys are doing as this is a race I'm considering for future. Cool weather is appealing to me after doing Canada this year when it was 95 and I'm so not a hot person.

Kathy - I lurked on the B2B messages last year and read all the race reports. That's why I'm doing this race. Plus, the super fast swim appeals to me greatly, since I hate swimming!

Me toooo ... that video was awesome. Made me want to go out and race!!!

I also am investing in booties and a swim cap and arm warmers. Not leg warmers though. I want my legs to go numb as early as possible to dull the pain.

Edit: Ha my gmail moved all my B2B stuff to a junk folder. Not cool.

Anyway, is anybody going on the awards cruise on Sunday?

The wife and I are planning on the dinner Thursday night and the Awards Cruise.  But of course if the weather is real nice, we may alter plans and sit on the beach all day on Sunday because once we get home we could be shoveling snow

Hey all,
so, a little more info here since the ball is rolling on this thread nicely now.  I am doing B2B as my first Iron Distance having done two HIM's this year, and several sprints and an Oly since starting tris last August.  I am in week 7 of a pretty aggressive 12 week program- not the best way to go about training for my first IM, but it is what worked for me with family, work, etc.  This looks to be my biggest week when it's over tomorrow with abuot 17 solid hours (including a 2:16:45- 15 mile run yesterday and a 102 mile ride tomorrow- which will be my third century in the last 5 weeks).
A question- I wear contacts, and my eyes just kill after long rides, to the point of it looking like I crying- I've tried multiple pairs of sunglasses, but nothing seems to help.  Any input on a solution?  I've thought about racquetball type goggles on long bikes, but looking for help.
Thanks, and you guys/ gals rock.

Ben.  I plan on keeping a small bottle of contact solution in my transistion bags, or at least for T2.  After long rides they can be quite dry so I'm hoping a little bit of solution will help me through the run.  I also have a supply of one day lenses that I use for races and they seem to work better then the two week lenses.

I can't imagine hoping in the car Sunday and driving home.  A 14 hour drive would be cruel.  Hope there are some others that may hang out for a day or two.  I plan on getting a chance to eat at some of Wilmington's dining choices after race day, as I don't think a big plate of crab cakes on Friday night before the race will work well

I think were heading home early Tuesday morning, unless the weather is bad will head home earlier.

I am going to the cruise. Lucky to live in North Carolina!

I don't wear contacts, but I do have dry eyes. When driving long distances, my eyes hurt. I have this aerosol saline spray bottle that I use to wet my eyes. It takes some getting used to, spraying that stuff at your eyes, but once you get the hang of it (without a jerk reaction), it's easy. I can do it while driving, so I imagine you can do it while biking. Nice thing is, you don't have to tip your head back.

I also wear contacts. I have no idea what sort of helmet you have, but have you looked into a windscreen? The Louis Garneau aero helmets have windscreens that attached to the helmet, and completely seal up the eye area. That way, you would not have that gap between the top of the sunglasses and the helmet for air to get in and dry out your eyes.

Here is the link to A3S and the one they have. Not sure if there are other windscreens for other helmets.

http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=louis-garneau-wind...

Perhaps packing visien or some solution in your T2 bag is a must. A quick squrt in T2 would help.
