Anyone know how the winds were in previous races?  I just finished my ride today and found myself struggling on roads that in the past weren't too hard.  I knew it felt windy but when I got home to check it said 15-20mph with 25mph gust from the north.  If that's normal for the race I need to adjust my strat a little and spend more time riding on windy days

I've never done this race, but I've done other tri's at the same place, as well as the Decker Challenge Half-Marathon. Of course, the Decker Half had beautiful weather in 2008.

I was on the bike and run course last Sunday. I can say that on days that are windy, the bike course will be difficult. Its mostly rolling hills and farmland, with wide open spaces. There are a few miles that are shaded with trees on one or both sides of the road, but the wind could potentially be brutal.

I watched last year's Longhorn, and I remember it being hot, but can't remember if it was super windy. Some others who raced last year could say for sure.

Cool

The wind at last year's race was swirling & brutal, it felt like 53 of the miles were into the wind. I don't care if it's as hot as it was last year, I just don't want to deal with that wind again. Even the guy that won the whole thing said in his interview that he felt bad for the people who were still out on the course(which included me) because it was only getting worse.

If you were able to get off the course relatively quickly, the wind was actually a big boost, because it was out of the southeast. By the time it really got going, you were either in the more protected areas of the course or had it coming from behind you. On the other hand, if you were still on Littig when it got going, it made for a long ride.

It didn't help that I was in like the 3rd to last wave, either.

Awesome lol.  I just checked my comp and on the climbs into the wind today I was only managing 11mph and it felt like I was pulling a car behind me.  On the flats it was eh, about 16mph.  Usually I manage 18-20 on this particular course with 5-10mph winds.  I basically ride up and down the 130 access roads so it's pretty unprotected from the winds, which Pflugerville always seems to have a lot of anyways.  I call it my "Only have an hour between conference calls" course.  I guess I'm gonna need every bit of those 5 weeks and 4 days :-)

Wow, I seriously do not remember any wind? I think I need to reread my own race report. I was in a pretty early wave, and swam a pretty good time, maybe I got off the course before the wind. I do remember it rained a tiny bit on my last mile of the run then the sun came out with vengeance. It became brutally HOT. I felt bad for the those left on the course.

So, to change subjects: Water temp? I really don't want to swim 2k without a wet suit!

Not sure what current water temps are but here's what I can say...
4 weeks ago getting into lake pflugerville (about 10 minutes from the race lake) felt like getting into a bath tub.
1 week ago getting into the same lake was a chilly experience.
We also had a considerable amount of rain last weekend and some more on the way next week.
Aside from my lawn thanking the heavens, it will probably help cool down the lake temps.
Also we've gone from an average 100 degree temp during the day to low to mid 80's and high 60's at night over the past week or so, which I'm sure will help lower lake temps.
In all, if the current weather keeps cooling I'd expect it to be a wetsuit legal race.

On a related note, the cooler weather has made training a dream where most of the summer it was sheer torture

See ya in October!

The temperature at Decker doesn't change much because there's a power plant that uses the water for cooling. That said, I'm fairly certain that it will be wetsuit legal.

It was last year but only by 2 or 3 degrees, I just left my suit in the car, to much pain in the butt to remove.  I think it was about 72 last year, nice.

The week leading up to last year's race saw the temp of the lake drop a LOT. This year, the race is 3 weeks later, the rain probably brought the temp down a bit, and the weather isn't pushing it back up (though the plant does). I'd be pretty surprised if it wasn't wetsuit legal again. It wasn't the first year.

Glad to hear I'm not the only nut that rides out there.  I usually ride on the shoulder of the main lanes though.  I love that wiiiiide shoulder!  I've been from Hwy 71 all the way up to Chandler Rd.

I need to check the laws again, but last time I looked, it is legal to ride on the toll roads, and you do not have to pay at the toll booths.

That doesn't mean its safer or smarter to ride on the toll roads, with most people driving 80mph or more, but it is legal.

Cool

Do the trains run on Sundays?

Was out today riding the last 50 miles of the course, and thought as I was crossing the railroad tracks along Littig Road (twice), "What happens if a train comes along during the race?"

Think anyone will mind waiting 3-5 minutes for the train to pass? Possibly twice?

We have a signed contract with the Railroad to NOT run trains during the race

Yeah, we think about these things...It's one of the first things we do each year. I wouldn't hold the race on this bike course if I couldn't get reassurances from Cap Metro to not run trains on that day. Cap Metro has been GREAT about this. Thank them!!!!!!

yup, right outside the arena on the beginning of the run, so you'll have access on each loop. You'll drop them off in the morning, before getting on the bus

Can anyone make a recommendation on Chainring size and rear cog size best suited for Austin?
I have heard that the ride is a little hilly, but not sure what setup is best for the course.
Can anyone help out?

I will be riding Cannondale Slice, and finished Captex at 22Mph earlier this year.

You ever ride Windhaven? There's nothing on the course worse than that hill, and the ones that are may have been removed due to the course change at the end. So if your current setup is fine for Windhaven, it's fine for Longhorn.
