Slidell4life - 2010-07-08 11:21 AM I did see people in sleeveless wetsuits. There were very few of them, though.

There were few people in sleeveless.  I train through the summers here and when the temps start to drop in October/November it's hard to get used to the low 60 degree water temps. I know quite a few people who had a long T1 because they couldn't warm up. If you have experience swimming in cold water and your body is acclimated to this water temp, I'd say wear your sleeveless.  Otherwise, it's a good idea to wear a full wetsuit.  I remember my hands and feet were numb getting out of the water and I started to get feeling back 10 miles into the bike.

It took you over an hour to warm up?

Yeah, actually about 40 minutes. I didn't change in T1 so I guess it's my fault I was cold. Once I got on the Beeline I was fine. This year, I think I'm getting a throw-away jacket to wear on the first part of the bike.

I got out of the water and my feet were frozen, but it took just under 2 hrs for me.... I had a full Blue Seventy that was great...  Took 18 mins in T1 as I was so cold trying to change clothes.. I got ya beat..... I didn't get feeling back in my feet until around mile 16 and that was with my home-made toe warmers from an old pair of work socks..  There were a number of women really suffering from the cold in T1... I was shocked when I saw my splits that I took that long... Had no sense of time trying to get changed...  The cold water was a mental challenge for me to overcome.. Practice as much as you can in about 60-62 degree water and if you feel good in your sleeveless, go for it...

I have a sleeveless suit and have just bought speed sleeves for IMAZ 2010. When I volunteered at the race last year I observed that swimmers coming in after 1.35 seemed to have far more issues. Also, there were folks with just sleeveless suits (not many).

A lot of it depends on what you're accustomed to.  When I lived in New England, I swam several 1/2 IM swims in 56 degree temps with just a sleeveless suit and had no issues.  After the first 3-5 minutes in the water, it was comfortable.  But if you don't habitually swim in those temps, yeah, it might be a shocker, especially over long disances.

Yup A lot of it also has to do with how long you plan on being in the water.

I didn't realize the water in AZ was going to be that cold.  Glad to have read all that info, I definitely appreciate it.  Looks like I should go swim in some of the rivers being fed by snow melt or something around here ;-)

well.. how about "keep it under 2 hrs as best you can"... honestly, I only counted laps on a few practices.. My biggest concern was just getting in the water time with my goal just to get thru the swim...  I got bored going back and forth but truthfully, I was scared shi*less being out in the open water... Alamitos Bay was scary with submerged seaweed.....

16 feet down to 3 feet in depth.  Look on the bright side, at least the water that's left will be warmer.

So, what happens when the body of water you're supposed to swim in for an IM is no longer there?

Article from AZ indicating that the dam holding Tempe Town Lake ruptured and the whole lake was drained. What now?

The mayor of Tempe said in a press conference that they are fixing the dam now, and are planning to have it ready to go by Nov 1.  I look forward to progress updates.
