Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread maria40nc - 2010-12-06 2:22 PM We booked the host hotel. I'll probably just use the BT Beginner IM plan, maybe tweaked a bit. I'll just keep working on base until then. Scheduled to run my first marathon in March. I don't want my first marathon to be at the end of an IM! Have ya'll thought about the rest of your race schedule for next year? Planning any other races, or solely focusing in IMFL? I crammed my race schedule last year and regretted it, so for now I only have the marathon on March and the IM in November scheduled. But I know I'll get the itch to add more. I'm doing Eagleman 70.3 in June Nation's Tri in Sep IMFL in Nov This year Kinetic HIM, Nation's Tri and B2B full were just about perfectly spread out to give me a 7 month season and that worked well. I'll probably thrown in a sprint or three if I find one that I like. They've got a 14.06 super sprint that's fun to do around here. I'll probably sign up for a handful of century rides and might even sign up for the double century I missed out on last year just to do it. They won't be for time or anything, just a group ride with a t-shirt. Winter maintenance plan right now. 20 week IM plan starts Jan 23d for my prep for Eagleman. |

Veteran 106 Gloucestershire, England | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'm doing the Maryland Trifecta of Columbia, Eagleman and then The Nation's Tri (OK not in MD but the bike portion goes into MD). The question I am slowly considering during this quiet time (training for me at least) is whether I need to do a stand alone marathon next year. I've never run a marathon .. not sure I really need to and I'm worried about the impact on my already rickety knees, but equally not sure I want the first one to be in November. Decisions, decisions. But for the time being I'm enjoying doing no structured training at all. So all of you who are on the case are already ahead of me . I'll pick it up in the New Year. Perhaps. OK - I will. Adrian |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Adrian, Do not worry about the marathon. I had never ran anywhere close to 26.2 miles ever. I did one 18 mile run a few weeks prior to IMFL and was fine. It was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. Trust your training plan and you'll be very surprised at how well it goes. |

Adrian I'd never run over about 18 miles prior to the B2B full distance I did this year. It's not a problem. Funny, I'll see you at 3 of the four races you have listed |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Most coaches don't encourage you to run a stand alone Mary before IM as they are completely different animals even though the distance is the same. Tapering, running and recovering from Mary puts a big hole of about 4-6 weeks in most folks training. If someone wants to do a Mary before an IM it is best to plan it the prior year..ie doing one soon/year before or early winter not in the 4-6 months prior to the race when balanced tri training is key. |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Kathy does bring up a very good point regarding recovery... which is the main reason why I have never done a stand alone marathon. That's 4-6 weeks of bike and run training that is sacrificed or greatly diminished while you lick your wounds from the all out 26.2. |

I'm going to hire a coach and that will be one of the things to talk through early on (as well as my poor swimming, biking and running technique ). May well skip the standalone marathon. Looking forward to participating in this community during the journey of the next 11 months .. Daniel - Why don't you do the Columbia Triathlon for the set then ! Adrian |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I just signed up for a tri camp in mid March...8 days of lots of riding in the warm sun with lots of hills to get some good miles in my legs before it is warm enough here in MA to ride a lot outside. I find most years even with solid time on my CT it takes about 6 weeks of riding to get my FTP up to my normal summer high and feel strong on the bike. Hope this time in CA will push that ahead and help me in the last 3 months before Ironman Lake Placid. I was even able to get free ticket to fly to Santa Barbara on US Air with my husband's miles. My husband rocks! He will work from home that week and hold down the fort with the kids and all they do. |

Veteran 206 Auburn | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Sunbird - it's so close and so NOT CROWDED. It's a 500m walk to transition and finish. And - cheap might I mention. Look at the first floor units and they are at least $15 cheaper a night than the upper floors. |

View is spectacular. If you rent through vbro be careful all units aren't equal in quality of furniture, decor and bed quality. |

Champion 7704 Williamston, Michigan | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread miturner - 2010-12-07 8:58 AM Interested to know what others think/are doing on this topic: If you have more than one type of workout in a day, e.g. swim and bike, do you do them back to back or at different times during the day? I personally prefer to get everything done in one go in the morning (I am a morning person). I have done triathlon's (sprint, olympic, HIM) for some years now but 2011 will be my first full IM so training will increase!! Thanks for any inputs/thoughts! I do what I can as time allows. My life is quite busy and hectic so splitting the workouts works best for me. The exercise science research supports that you get the same cardiovascular benefit splitting them or doing them all at once. That said I think there is something to be gained from learning to do things tired but you gotta do what you gotta do to get things done and make things fit into your life. |

Member 58 Boynton Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread miturner...i think the back to back workouts vs splitting up can vary depending on the goal of the day..... its one thing to build up endurance through bricks, but another to have high quality intensity workouts in different disciplines that are better done after a period of rest. although the same total cardio may be able to be achieved either way, I would think that the endurance buildup would be better in combining. just depends on what you're after. I think that a well rounded plan would have some of both types of workout scenerios to maximize not only short intensity building but endurance as well... Edited by gkuehnel 2010-12-15 8:57 AM |

Member 58 Boynton Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread ...as far as how i am incorporating this into my training comes down to a question of time available during the day.... I sometimes don't have time twice a day to workout, so am forced to combine workouts. Other times, I have sacrificed one of the two workouts a day to perform better on the other. I have had to learn the hard way that if I miss a workout, not to try and make it (or them) up at a later time...thats when I have had to fight fatigue, had crappy workouts, or been more susceptible to injury. Thanks to all - now if this weather would just get above 25F so I am not freezing after the first 5 minutes outside...... |
