While focusing on technique, I often lose count. Set= 1.y.z rep in set= x.1.z lap in set= x.y.1 I breath every third stroke and repeat the number as I go. E.g., first lap "1-point-1-point1" breath one side"one-point one-point-one" breath other side. 2nd lap= "one-point-one-point two" etc. Other people use pennies. After you swim for a while, you will know your pace and can go by that as well. |

The treadmill can only go to 9mph so my LT may be a little higher, but I think it will do for now. Good job! So how do the results line up with what you were dong beforehand? Better to be a bit low than high on the HR zones! |

Expert 713 Rockledge, Fl | Subject: RE: DRM's Group - FULL For reps in a set, I ahve always used my water bottle. If I am doing sets more than 5, then I will count out 5 spots and use that twice. I usually use the tiles on edge of pool. As for keeping track of longer intervals (i.e. 200y or more interval) it is harder to keep track. Especially when doing long ones like 1000-1500 time trials. My mind tends to drift during these longer swims. What helps me the most is to count every 25y. That way if you miss counting one lap, you will know if you are off because of the 25 or 50 side of the pool. |

Master 2379 Alpharetta, GA | Subject: RE: DRM's Group - FULL Right now, as I'm in pre-K/K where swimming is concerned and therefore only need to worry about smaller numbers like 1-10, I keep it in my noggin. However, as I'm learning that tri DOES contribute quite a bit to our nation's GDP (and I'm a patriot), I'm seriously considering the purchase of one of these items at such time in the future when counting becomes a pain: |

Better to be a bit low than high on the HR zones! For the most part I've been running in high Z2. So it lines up fairly well. |

Personally I wear my shoes and climb on. Also the transistion area grounds can dictate this too. Practice it and see how it feels. If you feel confident / comfortable on having the shoes mounted and running in socks/barefoot then go for it. |

Pro 6582 Melbourne FL | Subject: RE: DRM's Group - FULL The February Challenge is being formulated! Look like this month will be a Bike and Run month. I'd like to see each of you come and play. It is a great way to stay focused in your training in the base season and have some fun with others on a team format I usually take my training plan and derate it 70-80% for my goals. This helps to fator in an illness or slight injury. Didn't work for me too well in Jan as I got sick, I only planned for my early month business trip and screwed myself. |

Expert 936 Springfield, MO | Subject: RE: DRM's Group - FULL I would love to do a challenge, but I'm worried about my ITB issue. I'm tired of this being an overwhelming factor in everything for me, but I am Anyway, would it be silly, ridiculous, chicken-sh!t, less than honorable (you pick) to do the challenge at say 50% of my plan? I feel like if that's all I'm willing to commit to I should stay out. Survey says?! |

Do you feel like you're on target, and while I'm working up to 20 questions, what's been the hardest or most unexpected part of training for an IM? |

Do you feel like you're on target, and while I'm working up to 20 questions, what's been the hardest or most unexpected part of training for an IM? It's much harder than I thought it would be. I'm getting into great shape, but the impact it has on my psyche and on my family is a lot more than i thought. I'm a surgeon and I can work long hours. Often I have to choose time with my son over earlier workouts and I find myself working out from 8-10 or 11PM. That makes sleep hard to come by. When work is hard I start to get run down. I would advise people that before they train for an iron man they have a long discussion with their SO about needing support for those twenty weeks. My wife has been great. At this point in training I know I can finish the race. It's in me. When I started off earlier in the program, I thought "holy crap, this is going to kick my butt" But I'v elearned to stay within myself, stress injury prevention and injury recovery. I'm getting stronger and stronger now. The 4500m was doable, 1:30 minute tempo run was doable, 3 hour bikes at race pace no problems right now. So overall I feel pretty good about things. It's a mental grind, but overall it will be worth it. I'm learning a lot about my body, and a lot about how I will train differently in the future. sorry to be so long winded! This group has ben very supportive the last few weeks and I appreciate the advice! |
