Asalzwed - 2013-03-01 12:51 PM I am doing a race simulation tomorrow AM. Our coach wants me to do a warm-up then 11 miles at marathon pace + 1 minute then run to the track where I will be doing 2 x 2 miles @ marathon pace drinking exactly what is on course only every mile. It should be good. Then I have a HM next weekend so, some serious simulation before I leave for Texas.

How did you get 5 hours of snowboarding in the other day, extra vacation day????

I had Wednesday and Thursday off.  I should say, I took them off. I was originally supposed to do a PowerBar event but they got cancelled so I kept the days just to get stuff done.

Plus I had to work on my portfolio a little bit since my interviews are on Monday. Surprised

Oh, OK. Cool, have you worked the portfolio stuff yet, or is that a weekend thing?

I'm taking it easy this weekend.  DH is off to a bachelor party in DC playing crazy nerdy board games, so I'll be hanging out with little Miss E.  Also, my foot tattoo got finished today!  Check it out. I'm totally in love with it.

mn_av8or - 2013-02-28 1:05 PM Feb went waaaay to fast... especially when I have my first half marathon coming up.  I'm not really scared about not finishing but I have a feeling it will be a crap time unless I can finally shed this chest cold.

You'll do fine.  My tips are: line up appropriately at the start, drink when they offer it, bring a gel to have at the halfway point.  If the race is local, ride your bike on the course a week or two beforehand (yes, this weekend!) for familiarization.

Thanks, I only taken gels when I've biked because I was scared of how they would react with me running but I suppose I should try a couple out before the actual race.  Bike the course before the race?!  You realize that I am in Minnesota right? Tongue out

Do they not sell winter riding gear in MN?

While we are waiting for her race to start... Cool

I went to a "kickoff party" last night for one of the local sprint races. Instead of doing an online signup they just have a "party" at the local LBS and they bring in vendors etc. It was good. I signed up for the race. I got to meet a local pastor-7-time-Ironman-finisher. And I got to say hi to Coach Andie, she said they miss me at swim squad and asked about Oceanside. Then I went downstairs to the bike part of the store where I registered to win a free bike fit (when I left there were only 4 people registered) and FINALLY found a container of PowerBar Perform. I tried the Perform this morning at swim and it is salty! Not good like our own Salty but bad salty like take a gatorade and add a cup of salt. I guess I can get used to it, like the nose plug. Oh, and I ordered a Baracuda HotHead swim cap, hopefully I'll get that next week. 4 weeks and counting LaughingSurprised

Why the nose plug if you haven't needed one in the past?

DS2, who lives in SoCal, tells me that if I don't use one I'll be tasting/smelling yucky ocean water for the rest of the race.

For saltwater swims, I put on extra think chapstick before the swim and put a tube of chapstick in my bento box to apply when biking.  I rinse my mouth out with water on the bike.

Good to know. I wondered how much the nose plug would help because I inevitably swallow water during choppy OWS

mn_av8or - 2013-02-28 1:05 PM Feb went waaaay to fast... especially when I have my first half marathon coming up.

They do but I'd have to throw fatties on my bike.  I don't think my bike is meant for that :/

I wouldn't worry about biking the course at all, especially given the MN factor. I don't ever bike the course and it's worked out so far.

I WOULD be sure to try ANY/EVERYTHING you plan to do at the race beforehand. It's terrible idea to try something for the first time on race day, especially nutrition related things.

The point was to become familiar with the course.  That can increase your comfort level.  If the race is local, an easy bike of the course gives a good sense it -- probably a better sense of driving the course or just looking at it on paper.

And definitely what you said -- nothing new on race day!

To which many a porta potty can attest.
