So - what's the worst job you ever had?

Mine was in college.  I was a repo man for a rent to own furniture company.  This guy and I would drive around in this truck and go to a guys house that was late on his payment.  He could give us a check or we would take his couch (or whatever).  I still hate sleeper couches to this day.  those things are heavy.

UPS Truck Cleaner. Power sprayer... Middle of December... in Ohio.... Night shift... Nuff said.

I detailed trucks for years, middle of winter, Pennsylvania. HTFU I was a Carhartt poster boy.

No Carhartt here... Just company supplied dreds. I caught so much flac from the regulars because I was winter peak help in between quarters at college. It really sucked.

That's surprising... Usually the youngest is the most spoiled..... mega props to you...

Definitely agree. My youngest brother in law still lives at home in his mid 20s... no real job, no real education, no real aspirations.

OK, im gunna rant here for a second.

I"m going to preface it with the following:

I paid my own way through school with the exception of one semester where I was too sick to work in the summer so my father paid for tuition and books that year.  I then signed all of my tax credits over to him for two years.

I just like to do it on my own.

my sister, OTOH, had handouts all through school for everything, tuition books, she doesn't have any issues with taking money. Thats her deal, I don't feel the need for it to be "fair" or have the money be reciprocated or anything like that.

OK, so she's living in Whistler at my parents cabin and has been for umm, 5 seasons. She spends all her money on clothes, skis and toys and asks for handouts for physiotherapy, tri club membership, flights to join my parents in hawaii.. etc etc.. the list is endless.  My brother is similar to her too.. but anyway, where I'm going with this is... she lives in the cabin there, doesn't pay rent or bills or anything...  I would LOVE to live there for a season when I get back, I would pay rent and the bills... anything.. but she has one of the two downstairs rooms that are joined by a thin wall and the upstairs room is for my parents when they come. ...   So although I'm cool with all of what she takes, I'm finally getting frustrated with her living arrangement.

the end.

(I have moved back into my parents place in the last 6 months to save money for my trip, so I can't be on THAT high of a horse)

That sucks.

I know what it's like, though. I'm the oldest... paid for college myself, bought my cars, paid insurance, gas, tires, maintenence, etc. My brother and sister pay none of that. My bro gets a crappy summer job sometimes so he can take his girlfriend to T.G.I.Fridays... and my sister just accepts handouts. I kinda jokingly mentioned it once and my parents' reply was "Well, we have more money now than we did when you were that age." Ummm... so?

It sucks, but you're better off in the long run.

Same dang story, and same dang reasons by the 'rents'.  However, I love my indipendancey, and I owe a lot of it to these reasons.

Its a running joke in my family that I'm the oldest. All the organizing falls to me, Christmas, dinners, everything.  When my grandfather passed last month, it was up to me to corral my siblings, tell my parents and organize all of the family crap.. its weird, its my role, i'm ok with it.

From your rant... and this... You kinda aren't. Just sayin'

That used to be me. About 2 years ago I finally just dropped that burden - didn't want it anymore, didn't care if it all fell apart without me handling it. Most of it did fall apart. My little brother, who is a decent guy but really just wants to do his own thing, picked up some of it. The part I didn't predict is that now I'm the family villain for no longer carrying so much of everyone else's burdens.

I didn't HAVE to.. it was my choice..

Then it's not a "hand-out" if your parents gave your sister money for college and you refused it. I'm guessing they may have extended the same offer to you?

While it's one thing to mooch off of your parents and blow your money on clothes/fun, etc, it's quite another to say "she has no problems taking money" and making it sound like a bad thing that she didn't pay for college, because you CHOSE to pay your own way through college.

My parents paid for my entire education. And they bought me a car. Did I ASK them for it? No. But was I going to disrepect them and say no? Of course not. They're my parents and they worked hard so they could do that for me. I offered to pay for grad school. I had every intention of buying a used car. But my father said No. And you don't say no to my father. I am not living off of my parents - with the exception of payments (not including insurance) on the car that was bought for me as a gift, I am completely on my own financially. As is my sister, who also got her entire education paid for, and a car. My father did this so that we would not start out in debt. There are plenty of completely irresponsible 20-somethings out there who dig themselves into thousands of dollars of personal debt, ON TOP of school loans and car loans, etc. I have no debt and yes, I'm proud of that. My father showed us how not to waste money. But I would NEVER consider it a hand-out that my education was paid for in full. I still worked during the summers - I've had a job since I was 16. I earned my own "fun" money and made it last through the school year. My parents are generous, yes, but I don't ever ask them for a thing.

End of own rant.

And by the way, I'm the oldest.

Cullen. You're the female version of me. Only I'm prettier.

I am the youngest of four, never took handouts from my parents, had to pay my own way through college while my older brother had his paid for by our parents, my older siblings always took, took, took and still do while I have gone out and earned everything.

I just hate ASKING for or even accepting money offered to me without reason.

More werds. I am so much better off in a lot of ways as a result of the way I grew up. There are a lot of things I could have done without but if I want to look on the bright side I have no fear of poverty, as I've been there... no fear of injury... no fear of trouble or bad situations. Been there for all of it. I think the only real fear I have is of ending up a parent like mine and that is something I have full control over so I can easily prevent it.

That's not saying much!  Anyone is prettier than you - expecially a mega hottie canadian...

However x2 on asking/taking money.  I hate, hate, hate feeling like I owe someone.  I pay them back as soon as I can to get out from under it.

I live debt free (except for the car and house).  I don't use credit cards unless I have a specific plan to pay it off before interest hits.  OR if I can get however many months free financing, but then make monthy installments to get it done a couple months before it expires - but even that is rare.

That's how I have tried to live once I got out of school. Took a few years of strict dedication to get rid of the $80k in student loans between me and my wife. My wife had another $10k in credit card debt to pay off. Got that done. I'm hardcore about saving and keeping debt free - but I wish I could teach my wife a bit more conservative money management. She is a cheap as a person gets but still doesn't understand the difference between secured vs nonsecured debt, for instance. She went back to school last year to get an associate's on top of her bachelor's so she could get her state teaching certification... and she took out home equity loans to pay tuition. Student loans are the easiest low interest nonsecured debt you can get and she secures it against our house.
