Just read your race report JEREMY.  Nice job!  Fast run at 22 minutes...That kind of speed is only in my dreams.

Thank you.  I'm fairly confident that I just plain mis-fueled for todays' race.  Don't get me wrong, I'm satisfied with my results, but I've been faster on the bike and run.  I just expected more.  Live and learn.  Now I've got some training to do for this summer.  I may dive into my first Oly in August...

Feel like I need to pick the run up a bit which I think will happen with my starting HIM plan.

smoore3 - 2009-05-31 9:39 PM What does FOP mean?

Here is the whole list of finishing orders....

----Edited to include the following:

Win - Obvious and beyond my reach at this point

AG Win - Age group win, once again for me that ship has sailed

AG Place - In the top three for your age group - usually gets some sort of award at the post race ceremony

Finish edit-----

FOP - Front of the Pack - which would be you and Jeremy and Trevor

MOP - average, Middle of the Pack - that to which I aspire...

BOP - back of the pack - that would be me

DFL - Dead F*** Last

DNF - Did not finish

DNS - Did not start

S: 8500.00 Yd - 3h 17m 27s
B: 183.00 Mi - 12h 43m
R: 20.25 Mi - 4h 58m 30s

May results.  Overall, I missed some workouts, but had a lot on the plate for the month between full time job, 3 hr night classes M-Th for the first half of the month and 3 hr M-W-F night classes for the last week.  Still managed to make it to church and to family time!  Time to turn it up a notch for June...

BTW - lost 8 lbs in May, total of 30 since beginning of March - Woo Hoo!!! Still many more to go though...

Wow, our group was super busy posting for a Sunday!  Lots of talk about food!

Congrats to Sarah, Jeremy, and Trevor and hoping that Holly did okay.

Left my house at 9 am this morning for my monster ride (4.5 hours) and short run (20 min) brick and got home at 3:30pm.  Yikes, where did the day go???  I chose this route because a friend of mine had done it and told me it changed her life!  There were 3 Major climbs totalling 5500 ft of ascent over the course of 59 miles.  Total elevation of the 3rd "mountain" was 2200 ft over a 5 mile distance.  And it started at mile 42.  My quads started to scream mommy but I used this technique of not looking much further than 20 feet ahead and it helped.  There were a gazillion switchbacks and I swear I was in my easiest gear 34/25? a lot of the way and cadence at about 60 and I was only going 3.5 mph at times! The good news is, I never had to get out of my saddle.  I suppose rides like this make you stronger.  It was beautiful and much of it was on quiet roads with beautiful redwoods shading the sun.  4.5 hours for 59 miles is a bit depressing to look at on paper but I swear, I was really happy with the effort.

One thing that happened when I did my run is that my stomach was pretty crampy for the first mile and I had to walk a bit.  I'm wondering if anyone has tips on nutrition.  I drank through my two bottles of cytomax/endurox and had a bag of shot blocks, but unfortunately with only 2 cages, I had no water on the bike.  I didn't feel like I bonked at all.  I didn't really stop at all except to take a bathroom break.  I swigged some water when I got to the car but had a few minutes before I went out to run.  Is it better to stop drinking at a certain point on the bike to reduce stomach cramps?

Kim--congratulations on finishing a BIG TRAINING DAY!  Your bike climb is very impressive.  Re: the stomach issues, my guess is it is one of two things, 1) you took in too many calories on the bike and your digestive system was not able to successfully move them through your system or 2) you took in too high of a concentration of sugars and your GI system was unable to process them.  Those Shotblocks need water. If you are taking them with cytomax the osmality is too high.  Check out two articles from infinit: Determining cycling Calories on the Bike and the Osmality section at the top.  The beauty of Infinit is it provides the correct (low) osmality which  makes digestion easier.

Kim. Totally awesome ride, especially with that kind of climbing. I don't have anything anywhere near that kind of climbing around where I live. Can't help you out on the nutrition as I haven't run into that yet.

I'm not going to post my May training stats as I missed so much training I would be embarassed to say the least. I didn't get my ride in yesterday for the virtual. I lost the crown on one of my teeth (molar) and was in pain most of the day. Going to the dentist this morning...I hope..

Kim:

Those kinds of rides should not be measured by the time it takes you. The climbis are the measure. Many riders avoid the climbing because of the difficulty. You will see the results on your regular rides and your speed and strength will increase. Sounds like a terrific 4.5 hours!

Jeremy:

Heck of nice race! Good times!

Morning everyone.

ugh, always great to feel like crap the week of your basically "A" race.  Didn't workout yesterday my legs feel pretty much dead, feel like my back is going to give out at any minute (I have "thrown it out" 2x in the last few years), have no idea what I am going to do about my wetsuit, going to bring mine and the rental up with me and see which one bothers me less.

Anyone have some good cheese to go with my whine?

Take your pick,

Take it easy for a few days... you're in taper mode anyway, right?  do you see a chiropractor?

Kim, great workout - hard to find a hill over 500 yds long around here.  You should see some great results from that ride.

In my whining I forgot to congratulate everyone on their great races this weekend.  And Kim awesome ride, climbing the hills will make you such a stronger rider, while I hate them when standing up in my last gear, checking again to see if I have any gears left, after the fact it is so sweet.

I do have an appt with a sports massage therapist, tomorrow, so hopefully that works some stuff out, my back isn't looking forward to that 10 hour drive on Wednesday.

Wow I have a lot to catch-up on, last time I read we were only on page 99!

my race report is up Iron Clad Tri

Learned a ton in this race..
1) Practice more race time situations ie: organizing the transition.  Clipping in on the run and positioning of my bike pedals.  Race pacing
2) Trust your instincts.  ie: during the swim I started at the back of my wave due to my panic attack during my first race.  I'm a much stronger swimmer now and should have started in front of the wave.  It cost me big time..
3) Running cross country and through hilly woods is very hard!
4) maybe buy a tri-bike sooner rather than later (anyone know of a size 56 used tri-bike for sale?  for some reason i always like buying used.)

Nicely run race that had great volunteers and they provided a full out breakfast buffet right when you crossed the finish line!

I think that one is to your draft.

Great job on the race.  IMO it takes a few races to figure out what works for you in transition and each discipline.

Nothing wrong in buying used, they go just as fast as a new bike.

Good report Stan. Lots of good advice. Are you from around Glen Cove? I grew up in Huntington Station. Reading your report makes me believe that running the route a head of time would have been a great help. Sounds difficult.

BTW- Tracy, I held my pee in before the race so i would have plenty of warmth during the swim but for some reason I must of had stage fright and couldn't go..  I held it for the whole race!  Your baby power suggestion works wonders!

I just noticed that many of this group are online right now. I am glad to see we all have our priorities set correctly. These jobs are just getting in the way! No wonder we have the most posts!

There are at least 11 members of SWBKRUNMG on line at 10:20 EST on a Monday morning! Awesome! Now go out and train!

Thanks Doug!  I've been living in New York City for the past 12 yrs, the Glen Cove area is very nice it makes me miss the suburbs.  Your right I should have run the course earlier, it would have helped a ton.  I'm lucky,  my "A" race (NYC triathlon), I run 85% of the course all the time, unfortunately I can't ride or I don't dare swim (the Hudson) the course.

BTW if you are really looking for a tri-bike and ride a 56ish you are in luck, that seems to be the most common size for sale for some reason.  Just looked on ST and there are 3-4 for sale in the first few pages...Laughing

How do you figure the number of laps on a running track for 3.1 miles.  Would it be 12.5 laps?  I guess 4 laps would be 3 miles, but what about the .1?  Is there a true measurement on the track, or use the garmin?
