Fig newtons are standard ride food around here.

My Mom used to rock up with the Netwons back racing Kona in the '80's.

Pretty sure I wasn't born when that came out....
A comment like that could start 10 pages of "I have aerobars, a wetsuit, running shoes, ect...that are older than you".

Wanna know what makes fig newtons so crunchy?

"If you made Fig Newtons for a living and you wanted to know how many insects could get into your Newtons without your getting into hot water with the FDA, you could look it up on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Food Defect Action Levels Web site. Here you would learn that fig paste is allowed to have up to 13 insect heads per 100 grams."

Source: http://www.salon.com/health/col/roac/2000/01/14/filth_lab/print.htm...

Ew. I learned that 6 years ago and have never had a fig newton since.

BTW- do you people work?? I think we average like 5 pages a day. This is most definitely the TAN of Ironman...or IronTAN....

Way to go Jazz.  Now my stock in Fig Newtons just dropped.

I think the crunch is the tiny seed from the Figs.

BTW that article goes for about every type of prepared food the FDA inspects.

Oh I'd forgotten about Fig Newtons.  I used to use them til they got so yummy I'd eat them all and there would be none left for my long rides so then kept them out of the house.

Revisiting my nutrition this year I'm wondering  if they're the way to go - they're so soft and easy to eat compared to chewy power bars and sticky gels.
So I went and put some in my trolley (cart to you Americans)- and even resisted my natural urge to go wholegrain -  got to the checkout, foolishly looked at the ingredients and they had HFCS.  Yikes that's against all my current "clean" eating.
So I ditched them but am in big dilemma land and maybe will go back and get them to try on my long ride this week
I'm doing NOLA 70.3 in a couple of weeks so want to "decide" on nutrition plan before then to test it out there.

Gatorade E, water, electrolyte tabs and fig newtons.  What do you reckon? (this is for bike part)

Having hopped onto the Fig Newton bandwagon (if it's good enough for the oldies fasties, it's good enough for me!), I did a little research. Fig Newman's (clever name, huh?) don't have any HFCS. They're organic and free range and stuff.

I reckon my Mom set two AG world records in Kona in the '80's eating them. I rekon back when she was a 40 something housewife she could beat half the men posting in this thread. How do you like them figs now?

Well, I'm completely sold then!  Especially since I'm a 40 something housewife!!!!

Thanks for the heads up on Newmans swishyskirt - I'll try to find those first and if not Newtons it is (after all they'll match my shoes in name)

They also have Strawberry or Raspberry Newtons. My personal favorites for bike rides are Raspberry.

I don't remember that commercial but I do recall the jingle.

PennState - 2010-03-27 6:06 AM Never tried fig newton's on the bike, but I sure do like insect heads so I'm going to give them a try soon

I eat bugs when I ride so why not ingest them on purpose in Raspberry Fig Newtons?

Maybe I need to ride with my mouth shut

There is acceptable bug count & other nasty things in most processed food.
