No Tony, I teach in Frederick County, MD, schools were closed. I know a lot of people could not and still are not home from yesterday's workday that take I-70 west.  It was bad for a little while.

Since Jon is MIA, for the rest of today I propose that everyone try to write their posts in the true FattyFatFat fashion. That means read innuendo into everything and post pictures from all over the Interweb in your posts.

Oh, and to our Canadian members sorry I missed Wayne Gretzky's 50th birthday yesterday! (Mark Messier's 50th was 1/18/11 so we missed that too.)

Hi gang - just got into work.  I ran in this morning since DC public transportation sucks!!!!  I figured it would have taken me the same amount of time to cover the 4.5 miles to my office on foot as it would to wait for a bus then creep along on the metro.  And I got my run in for the day.  I hope everyone is having a good morning.  :-)

I had a great swim this AM. I met my coach at the pool and he filmed me doing different drills and then reviewed the tape with me. It was both above and under water filming. From a previous session I have been working on rotating my torso and pushing through the end of the stroke. I seem to have done ok on that so now:

I am now working on two things NOT lifting my head as I get tired as this causes my lower body to sink thereby creating more drag, and my arm entry. I seem to slap the water too much and as a result the beginning of my stroke is downward and not rearward. So now I try to enter the water sooner and then extend my arm under the surface and begin pulling backward.

It seems to work I did 1700 yds. after the filming and talk and while my shoulder were tired from working the muscles a little differently, I was not tiring as much as usual and felt like I was gliding more. Also I seemed to be able to minimize my kicking. I am enjoying learning how to swim bettter.

I hope to break 1:20/ 100 yds. by early March.

That's great, Doug. It sounds like you're making some real progress! Please keep sharing the swim tips - I've been putting them to use as I'm slowly rebuilding my swim. So thanks to you and your coach!

Will do, but I am embarrased to post a link to my first swim video. It just does not look flattering. If TV adds 10 pounds, then the Internet adds 30!

OK. Here is a link to the video, but please be kind as apparently I am the featured bald fat man. This was my earlier swim session where I found out I was not turning my torso enough and not pulling all the way through the stroke:

Marty will tweak it a little and you will blow that 1:20 out of the water!

Thanks for sharing the video Doug.  I watched one of his vids with him swimming and he really exagerates that EVF.  I have been trying to work on that, and it really takes some strength to be able to pull that off for a long set.  I usually get tired and it falls apart.

Are you doing or working on the 2 beat kick?  Your instructor is pretty smooth with that.

Right now I am not doing anything with regard to the beat of my kick. I am trying to increase my driving force and to clean up my form to minimize drag. I am learning a lot that it is better to "slow" down and maintin form than to force it and get sloppy. In the end I am faster if I let myself go "slower." Make sense?

Marty is an amazing swimmer. He swam in college and he is usually in the top 3 in the local tri's he races, usually first out of the water. It is interesting that when I started triathlon, aside from noticing if someone was fast or slow I could not recognize good swim technique from bad. Now I am looking at all sorts of things trying to figure out what they are doing right and wrong.

(Then again it is one thing to recognize the right things and another to execute them.)

That's funny. My Master's coach told me to do the opposite. He said I wasn't extending my arm far enough in front so I was shooting my hand in accross my body. As a result I was cutting the pull short and was tipping myself over.  This swimming thing is too hard!!!

Agree, Tracy!!!  There are just so many things to think about!  1:20/100 is just unfathomable to me.  I looked at my video and it is as if Kathy had the camera setting in super slow motion compared to Doug!  Doug, is that the video before or after?

That is before. I have worked on correcting the problems there and now have new ones to take care of. I agree there are a lot of things to do to swim well. So I started with fixing some basics. 1 Torso rotation, 2. pull through, now 3 keeping head down, 4 arm entry.

Next I try to combine all that with powerstroke. And my best so far is 1:25/100 yds. I will try to break that tomorrow or next week.

Gotta love it, when I had NOTHING to do with this error.  Gonna print it and frame it - adter I forward to his cross-country coach!!

Hey All....busy last day before we leave tomorrow, but I did catch a lot of the day.

Doug:  You look great.  I can see the slight head lift, but man you get some egg beaters going on in that kick.  I want to be able to kick has as hard and fast as you.  Right now, I have the non existent less than 2 beat thing going on.  I've been working on kick sets, but for some silly reason that doesn't translate in my swims much at all.  Any ideas?

Linda:  I am so used to that David Browne being at the top of the list ever day, I find it funny someone displaced him for just a second!  I'm about to fall off the Top 50.....Where's the picture of the boots?

Dino:  I hope you are back in action after your sickness.  The man is sick again, coughing like crazy.  I feel very fortunate to get to sit next to him on a plane for 8 hours!

I'm taking my pc so keep me entertained while away!  Have a great weekend.
