Nightmare...  Every time i look at my calendar, another few weeks has gone by.  Work is really really getting in the way this year.  Anyone else got that problem????

My % training to date versus last year is about 12% and general preparation has been poor.  This leads me to my question.  Anyone got a spare room that they are trying to offload (otherwise, i`m camping ~ which, ordinarily, is a lot of fun).

Going to Placid twice before "race" day.  Both times are training and wedding planning but should be able to get some swims and rides in  :-)

I am looking at going up on Thurs June 7 and getting a swim in late in the day. Then try to do 2 loops on Friday the 8th with a 2 mile shake the legs afterwards. Saturday will be a get up early and either run or swim or a little of both, then check out of the hotel and get back on the road for home. Haven't officially booked anything yet.

MattAune - 2012-05-16 8:52 AM Raced the Half at Kinetic as my lead up to IMLP and things didn't go well on the nutrition front. Had bad stomach cramps and walked the first half of the run. It felt like someone stabbed me in the center of my gut right below the rib cage. Walking would make the pain manageable, but as soon as I started running it would hurt so bad that I would try to force my self to puke because I thought it might help. About halfway i was able to start a slow trot, then around mile 8 I had some gas, and after that I was running the sub 8 pace that i was hoping for all day. Never have this issue during training, but it has happened in both races this season (one Oly, and one Half). Maybe I just overcooked the bike both times. I hit my power numbers perfectly in both races but maybe they were set too high. I was able to run through the pain in the Oly and was not far from my goal run pace. It was much worse last weekend at the half. For the record I did the Oly at 88% of FTP, and the half at 84%. 90% and 85% was the goal. I am planning between 70 and 75% for IMLP. For the Olympic i had one bottle of Gatorade and a Cliff Gel which is a normal training regiment. For the half i had two bottles of water, two Cliff Gels and a pack of Shot Bloks. Again nothing I have not tried in training. Both times I had toast with PB and Nutella, a banana and some coffee for breakfast and I sipped some Gatorade before the race. My wife is convinced it the PB and Nutella, although that is my go to breakfast for most long training rides/runs as well as basically every running race i have done. I am open to any suggestions for things to try out before IMLP. I was thinking about testing a liquid only nutrition approach. Ensure for breakfast and sport drink supplemented with CarboPro for the bike. Anyone successfully use an all liquid diet for an Ironman? Other thoughts/suggestions?

Are you testing these products at race watt intensities with a solid brick run? Testing things at 70% is much different than testing at 84% with a brick. I also did Kinetic with Placid as my focus. I used and plan on using GU,Hammer Perpertuem, Endurolytes, and water. I also carry a cliff bar as my I need something solid emergency item. Didn't have any issues other drinking too much near the end of the race. Good luck of dialing in your nutrition.

What's your Race Pace HR vs. Training AVG HR?

If your Race Pace HR is even ever-so-slightly higher certain bodily systems may be shutting down or severely limited; such as the ability to breakdown and absorb solids, which would explain the stabbing in the gut pain.  I had that at Lake Placid last year on the run; but mine was from too much sugar on the bike.

I suspect since this happened at an Oly and Half, your Pace and intensity were reasonably high.  You mentioned possibly 'overcooking' it on the Bike, so again, I suspect you were pushing the pace on the bike.   Maybe in the future for 70.3's and Oly's you should consider a liquid nutrition approach.  I don't think you 'overcooked' the bike though as though symptoms would be more along the lines of quad, hamstring, calf cramps or just overwhelming fatigue slowing you to a walk.  This 'sounds like' more a nutrition issue when you're riding at threshold/race pace.

There is a very good chance if you plan to stay more Aerobic on the bike at Lake Placid that this issue will not happen; unless you do plan to push it and 'Race' LP...  If I were you, in the next month when you're, say, doing a 5-hour ride ... do the first two hours as WU and then do the last three hours at Ironman Target Pace (which should lower than your 70.3 and Oly pace) and then do a 6-mile Run off the bike (3mi out & back) and try to Run within :10 to :20 seconds of your target Ironman Pace.  Do the transition rather quickly ... and see how your abdomen reacts.  If you get those stabbing pains then, yeah, you gotta try a whole New Nutrition Strategy for LP.  If you stomach is fine, then I would try and repeat the experiment at least one more time under a similar BRICK (preferably a BRICK that fits into your training schedule).

Ahhhh... this is my favorite time of year.  The beginning of the true Triathlon Season.  And like every season we have different sayings.  And I've got to be honest, of all the mantra's on this site I have two favorites.  The first one is: SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP.  So eloquent and subtle.  But my absolute favorite just epitomizes the true spirit of the Triathlon Season.  It's my favorite saying for myself when I'm suffering during Peak Training and don't wanna get out of bed cause I'm too tired, or I'm at a brutal race mid-climb wondering why I sign up for this stuff, I love to remind myself to HTFU!!

Here are some funny videos that illustrate how to use the term: HTFU.  WARNING: If you are offended by the F-word, please don't click these links

Just have fun with it.  I get nervous after each of my races.  Once I get started that all goes away, and I just focus on the current dicipline.  The next thing you know you are at the finish line.  So make sure you try to pause the brain from constantly thinking and take in some of the sites and sounds of the race.   Good Luck and have some fun.

What is your position on your bike like? Aggressive? How much training have you been doing? It may be that it has nothing to do with what you eat...

SEADOCHA, there is some good advice right there.  Focus on one thing at a time.  A tri is a big, complicated endeavor and it can overwhelm the reasonable part of the mind.  The Triple T is a supersized version because of the multi-day/race aspect.  During the swim, focus on how you are feeling and whether your stroke/pace is right to carry you around the next turn.  In T1, focus on the half a dozen critical steps that you need to accomplish -- wetsuit off, helmet on, glasses, nutrition, shoes -- and if you mind turns to your bike pace (looking ahead) or to how you finished in the swim (looking back) banish the thought.  Stay in the moment -- or what is in your control for the next 5-15 minutes throughout the day and you'll be fine.  There is always the car ride home to analyze the race(s)

You'll be great.  I agree with JMoney, focus on the current discipline.  All the other stuff will fall into place based on training, practice and luck (stuff that is out of your control on raceday.)

Have fun.  Can't wait to hear about the race reports.

Not to take away from the TTT but I'm stoked! Going to placid this weekend to ride the course again.  I'm hoping to get my camera mounted to the bike before I head up and record the road, course.  We'll see if that happens though.

Go to bed early.  Before going to sleep, visualize your race day and how you will get through each leg, make sure you include a couple rough patches and work through them and then finish strong and confident because you executed a well laid out plan.

Don't try anything new that you haven't done in training, trust me, some last minute "great" new idea will pop into your head that will allow you to cut your time in half!  Even though it's your first race, so everything is new!!

Take what the day gives you and only focus on the things you can control, don't worry about those things that come up and are out of your control.

Enjoy it and have fun!  You only have one first, so keep it fun and remember IMLP is your A race (assuming it is).

Report back to team IMLP on your great days!

GOOD LUCK!!!

That's too close to the big day for my preferences, but that's just me.

Good luck this weekend at The Beast of the East Half Steelman!!!

I'm not much of a kicker when it comes to swimming so to me I would probably end up doing it.  I'm not sure I would actually race it, but I would try my IM pace to see how I feel.  Plus it's a bonus if it's a mass start so you can get in some practice for that since what I've seen in LP is going to be fun to say the least. For me anyways swimming seems to help my legs out, (It almost feels like stretching, until I start pushing off the wall with any force).  For me personally I would do any open water swimming I could since I don't get to do it very often, with a mass start it would be great for me mentally.
