I got my stitches out of my foot yesterday....they are happy with the healing even though I had burst 3 of the stitches at some point. I was in the pool again yesterday and today...I have forgotten how to swim...tried a short run this morning but the wound site is still very tender and I worry that i am adjusting my stride/form, so I won't run too much until it feels normal. I have a brand new pair of Nike Free that I am dying to try out but they have a seam right on my wound I'm wearing a pair of old stretched out Asics most of the time but I'm sure it's not good to run in them much.

Best news is that pathology shows we got all the tissue and margins, so all clear there!

In other news...I skipped my ride this am because there was frost all over the place..very rare for here!

Hooray for a clean pathology report. I think you are wise to wait to run until you don't feel like it is changing your stride any. That could set up other issues.

Finally had a decent run this morning.  It's been exactly 2 weeks since I got sick, and about 10 days since I resumed training.  RPE, HR, and pace are starting to settle back into the "norms".

Great to hear Jason!

I did a 50 mile bike ride today and was good/disappointing. I felt great after the ride, but my speed is slow. It's going to be a long day for me next month in my first 70.3. I'll think I'll get through it ok, I will definitely be pretty BOP. Not much I can do about that, but I am thankful to be healthy enough to train.

Just keep up with the training and plan to have fun.  IMO, having a good and honest self reflection of where you are at before going into a race like a HIM is very important.  Many people who have dissapointing experiences at a HIM are not always because they didn't train enough, but it's because they completely overshot their actual abilities and the last 10 miles of the run becomes miserable.  On the other hand, if you are able to pace yourself properly and set expectations based on your current fitness (and not the fitness you wish you had), you can set yourself up for a very enjoyable experience.  If you're in this for the long haul, your first HIM will not be your PR.  But you will most certainly remember what it felt like and how the day went.

swimmer shoulder ...we have SO dealt with this on my team. We hv a pt ON our team. super helpful. Sounds like rotator cuff  prob for you??? i assume it hurts while u swim not later?  The former being a little better than the latter. I hurt mine last July and was doing good till about a week ago. Realized i had quit doing my rotator cuff pt exercises...so i restarted that. Team mate said exactly the same thing happened to her 2 weeks ago. Have u gotten faster in the pool lately? i noticed that when i power on or swim for time my rotator cuff rebels a little...but next day i seem to be a hundred percent.

achilles. no clue there. never had prob.

swimming after foot surgery....my best swim buddy was out for double surgery on same foot. She was Really pathetic for about three weeks after returning to swimming....then bounced right back!

my workout

long slowish runs all week with my addicted canine. Fell down on poorly groomed hike n bike trail. have nice pic of banged up knee. will spare you.

Sunday cut bike ride short after being chased by VERY aggressive 90 pound Lab. DO NOT share scary stories about dogs. I want this behind me. lol

Feel i am about to break out of the swim plateau i have been on forever. I am starting more resistance training to get some power into my pull. Sometimes i have felt like giving up....been a slow swimmer since day one...but tons of endurance.

sunburn______thats a prob cuz we can"t cover ourselves with sunscreen and go train right? I like dri fit long sleeve light colored shirts myself.

My son just missed the podium in his first cat 3 mtn bike race of Texas State series. If i stumble on a good deal for a mtn bike i will do the local series beginner class its easier than the state series.

Some thoughtful soul installed a sign.... "share the rode with bikes" via dept. of transportation on MY street. Thanks whoever u are !

I had to abort my run today.  The sidewalks were complete slush and after stepping in an ankle deep puddle for the 3rd time, my shoes and socks were completely saturated with ice cold water so I gave up and turned around.  Hoping for better conditions tomorrow.

I also have a half marathon on Sunday and I'm hoping for good conditions for that too but the current forecast is for snow or rain.  Good thing the extended forecast for around here is never right...

I have twin scars on my knees from falling down, two different times. The first time was two years ago. Yep. The scar is still there.

And dogs . . . Fortunately, I haven't had any really bad experiences. Most of the dogs I see, while large, are friendly farm dogs. I just talk sweet to them and they wag their tails and leave me alone. One comes along and runs with me for a half mile or so. I love that dog.

The extended forecasts here are never right either.  The weather forecasters usually try to defend the purpose of their jobs by throwing in "possible rain showers" into the forecast but it never happens.

Quick flyby into the group:  You guys are starting off strong this year and I'm envious.  Many, many priorities for me at the moment - my mother is losing a battle with cancer, my VP of Sales had a heart attack (recovering well), and work is a monumental challenge.  However, when I stop to ponder the blessings, there are far too many to count...so all is well. I am simply trying to position training wherever possible. This will take a back seat for the rest of this week as well, since my wife and I are leaving the kids with Nana and getting outta dodge for a few days! Sweet.

Inspires are awesome - you know who you are!

If it's not obvious, my girls and I are dog lovers (one breed in particular :)  However, and though not trying to paint a horror story, here is a result of a dog on a country road one Saturday morning...hint: the front brakes on my bike work awesome:

edit: really, sideways??...i dunno.

Now, my wife carries "Halt" (it's like mace for dogs) on every outdoor ride.  Be careful out there.

Oh yeah, nevermind the Hoka. Recently received Nike Lunarglides...love 'em. Running is awesome. I'm even getting some time on the bike trainer...prolly headed down the Trainer Road path. Where's the pool again?? ;)

Hehe, beat me to it!

Gerlach actually had one the best bits of advice that I think many new to long course should do. If you can't smile, then slow down. He still tends to use this even though he's running pro. Don't worry about doing a pace that's fast enough. Continue to be consistent with your training and then make sure to go easy enough on race day. Get through it, learn from it, and have yourself wanting more.

Yes, very good news!

Sunday was my long scheduled 5K race in an effort to beat an almost 4 year old PR that laughed at me from the right margin every time I logged a workout here on BT.  I told my coach I wanted 10:35.  She was awesome, she signed up for the race just for me, she paced me feeding me great cues and tips throughout.  I got 10:23 so I'm really happy with that!

Today I ran 10 miles and definitely got a PB at that distance.  I used some of the tips coach gave me Sunday and they definitely helped.  My Tuesday course has some hills and they didn't get me today Smile

To all of you braving the weather up North, especially in the Northeast!  It was 80 here in Naples and I have a major sunburn from being at the beach four hours on Saturday.

My workouts this weekend were just ok, nothing to get excited about, Saturday was 2 hours on Paddleboard.  Sunday, was a really slow and easy run.  Can't wait till March first to start officially tri-training again (been doing Crossfit for four months).  Today workout is listed below:

1000 meter row
45 pound Thruster, 50 reps
30 pull-ups

30 Minutes Swim, lots of kicks and pulls!

Enjoy your day!

Heading down your way Friday to Jacksonville.

Fred D - 2013-02-10 6:32 Excellent post Shane.Yes, the challenge is trying to do the test without starting it with a ton of fatigue from prior sessions. So honestly I don't really test much anymore, but then again I sold my power meter and really only have it on the trainer so take all this with a grain of salt.

Fred, I'm pretty sure you mentioned this before, but I cannot remember. What was your reasoning in selling your power meter? The current 'trend' seems to be the opposite.

Thanks,

- Brian
