Morning Nibbs!

Any advice on how to help a 12 year old adjust to a new school?  C is really having a tough time - this morning was awful.

It has taken a while for my gilrs to feel assimilated into living here in VA.  They still throw it at us about being moved when they get in teenage fits.  Be patient, help him get involved in outside activities...do stuff together as a family and allow as much contact w/ his old friends as possible.  Kids at that age can be so cold to the new ones  and such a clique going on.....Hang in there!

The best thing I can think of is getting him to join as many extracuricular activities as he can.  Then it might be easier to find a group of friends who are interested in the same things he is interested in.  I think it is always hard at first, but making that first friend will help him go a long way to fitting in.

And I know this goes without saying, but you being there to talk and spend time with him each evening and weekend until he does build those friendships.  Are there any programs he can join at the local YMCA or community center?

Also, can talking to his siblings help?  They both had to go through a bit of this when they went off to college.  Not quite the same, but close.

I've got him signed up for soccer and bowling, he's also in band, so hopefully that will help

his birthday is coming up on Thursday so it's doubly hard for him, no party with friends this year

hmmm.... not even one or two new friends from soccer or band that he might feel comfortable with if you took them all out for pizza or puttputt?

I remember starting at a new school my jr year in high school.  But that was a way different scenario, b/c I still lived in the same place, just a new school in a new town.

Good Luck!

Can you get his old friends to throw him a virtual party? Throw them together in a chat room or something? It's lame, but maybe it will brighten his day.

And big presents. Big presents always make me feel better. Hee hee.

Beth - my brother and I both moved back to New Zealand while in High school....

I was 16 when we returned and my brother was 13... we both got through it just fine!!!

It was a LOT easier for my brother - despite joining late in the school year he made some really good friends slowly over the first 12 months who are now people he is still in touch with.

For me - I made some friends quite quickly but they are not people I have really stayed in touch with... lovely people but not a great fit. But it got me through...

From my experience the hardest part is lunch time and break when all the friendship groups kind of join up together and if you haven't been chatting to someone in class that you can easily join in with it can seem REALLY hard...

If there are school activities that take place during lunch breaks that really helps with that feeling of isolation - but to be honest kids will warm up pretty quick. It only takes getting a long with one a little in class to make a whole group of friends so Im sure it will get easier really fast!

thanks Cat!

for both this post and your previous one, it helps to hear from someone who has done it

I moved a lot growing up - 9 times before I was 15 - but it's different for C - he's never moved and everyone he knows he's known forever

he's never had to make new friends

I know this will be a good thing for him in the long run, just tough now

Yes, but you posted quite a bit in July. LOL

As for the Oct challenge.... Um. It's Sept 22nd, isn't it? So yes, if you have it written, I suppose you could put it up sometime this week.

Where does the time go when you're having fun working all sorts of stupid hours.
