Barry--- Pacing is pain in the arse.... Once you figure it out, it get's easier... You will see about this... I think you can ask Tony, and Rob... They have both come a LONG WAY since the beginning of the mentor group last year....

Yeah when I started last year I was happy to be right on 10min/miles, then dropped down to 9, now working on 8.

It's one of those things that you just have to be patient on.  Make sure you sign up for lots of running races, 5,8,10k's 1/2 marys and marathons,  following a good plan will make you faster.

Suzy, lol my wife has been making fun of me for that for years.  I used to play online games and had way more friends there and in forums and now with tri's I have a lot more people I talk to here than I do anywhere else.

Plainsman AU - 2009-06-01 4:14 PM HOLY COW...I AM NOT A RUNNER!  And I already knew that, but just went out to try to get a TT in.  First off, who am I to think that I can pace 7.5 minute miles.  Well, I did for about 2 miles  Got my first two miles in about 15 minutes, and got my last mile in about 15 minutes.  Totally blew an engine!  How in the HE!l do you people run like that?

I will post a time for team DEUCE at 28.6 which includes walking all the hills in the last mile and stopping at the water fountain at the tennis courts  I will try to give it another go before the deadline, but I have a race on the 13th, so I don't want to blow a gasket before.  I guess that is why they call it race PACE...knowing damnned well I can't run 8 minute miles.

Lesson learned.

Barry- hate to let you in on a little secret, but you ARE a runner! And, not to try to tempt you to go out and do another TT before your race, this is for fun after all, BUT, if you can run 2 miles in 15 minutes, you are physically capable of doing a 5k in 24:08 with proper pacing and training.  (my best 2 mile run is probably just a little faster than that)

It says so right here   http://www.runbayou.com/jackd.htm

I used this after I did my 10K last year and it's pretty much spot on for my fastest mile, 5K, half marathon and it gives good training ranges.  Check it out.  I think it was something Jorge posted on Tri talk in the fall.

Sorry I hope that provides a link or you'll have to copy and paste...sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Speaking of pacing, I think I actually learned something about myself today.  In fact I think I've actually felt it developing over the past few times I've been in the water.  I'm not sure when I'll use it but I found the zone I can go and maintain after I go really really hard for a couple hundred yards.  Maybe its just mental, but after I go hard and I mean as hard as I can go (I can feel my heart going nuts and I'm winded) I can settle down and keep going and know that I'm ok.  And we all know I'm not the fastest guy in the MG buy any stretch but the pace I can maintain isnt slow for me.  Kinda cool. Its like walking after you redline for a while on the run.  Only I'm in the water and not scared of drowning.  Am I making any sense?

Cracked the keyhole on the seat post.  I still got him on the trainer and I'll take him out for shorter rides.  He's a bit big for me but was my first real bike.

Absolutely that makes sense....You've learned where you can push yourself to, while not going completely overboard. I'd be curious how long you could sustain that 'redline' mentality and then settle down after and get into a rhythm. And I guess thats the point of the distance vs speed ideas....Some people enjoy pushing to see how fast they can do the same distance, and redline themselves.(Tony is a good example of that i think). Where as some people enjoy the slower pace but further distance mentality to see how far they can go. I think I hijinxed your post and went another way with it, but oh well Its Monday night and the kids are in bed so its time to get crazy!

If this pot keeps getting better some of you may be tempted to sand bag your swim just to win these 'sweet' prizes!

I give my wife a hard time about Facebook (something I despise) and her "fake" friends as I call them.  So I know what you mean.  I feel like we are all friends.  I also have an email list (actually a corp that I partly own) that we use for programming help.  I've never met any of them in 9 years, but feel close to all of them. In fact, 5 of us, in 5 different countries, built a free add-in for Access apps as a team.  It was very cool.
Now I feel like you all are driving me in my new tri adventures.

My other big hobby is woodworking. I am on the Board of Directors of NCWoodworker.net. What started as virtual is now real. I have met many, many, many of the members. It is great. I hope to meet tahrens and Havin'Fun as we are practically neighbors. I get up to the greater DC area regularly, so maybe there is a chance to meet Tony too.

Maybe there are a couple of tris one year where we could try and get a group of to enter. If your thinking of entering one in the NC triangle area, let me know. I will be your support (if I am not in the tri too.)

Lets face it, this is real because it is hard to find people as fanatical as us on the street!

Welcome to the virtual tri Sarah! I swam my 400 twice the AM, same time both times! I have got to do this in a larger pool!

ugh, so my trip to the massage therapist today might decide if I am even going to race on Saturday now...

It's just a small nagging pain now but I have visions of it locking up 1/2 way through the swim which would be a really bad thing IMO.

While it would majorly suck to drive 10 hrs and not race (wife is racing on Sunday anyways) I guess I would rather do that than hurt myself and have to take the rest of the summer off.

This happened to me 2 years ago I was signed up for my first tri the 2nd time my back gave out on me but wasn't such a big deal then because I hadn't been really training like I am now.

Yeah nothing wrong with either way I think.  My wife is doing a much longer distance tri than I am with almost the same amount of training involved, I think I probably over-train a bit for Olympic distance, funny when you start to think of 1500M swims, 40k rides and 10k runs as short distance events.  But to me 56 mi and 13 mile runs seem so long right now and not sure I could keep myself going strong (lol or maybe at all) for those portions

Tony--take care of the bod!  If you think something isn't right, bag the race and plan for the next one.  As a recovered runner, I know the consequences of not doing taking that course of action.

Barry--I was thinking about you today during my Tempo run and had another idea on pacing.  I had 2 20 minutes intervals at a 7:45 pace.  I started goosing the first one up to around 7:35 and then asked myself, "can I hold this for the full 20 minutes?".  The answer was NO, so I slowed down, staying just below my anerobic threshold and held the 7:45 well. Wasn't totally easy, but I was pretty sure I could do it.  You might try that on the next TT attempt.

Good morning fellow SWBKRN'ers....  have a pedal question. for illustration here they are...http://bike.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/products/pedals/road/product.-code-PD-5610-L.-type-.html

I think when I first got them I was adjusting the tension on the clip and may have broken it. I was new to clips and to be honest didn't really know what I was doing. My right shoe is really hard to clip out of now. Which isn't very much fun. I have played around with it the last few days, and I don't really think adjusting it makes much difference. So can I fix it? Or what others solutions are there?

Wow, so much to respond to. Where do I begin.....

Tony, (about being past by the power bar guy), the truest thing I ever heard about group rides is that the biggest a**hole in the group is never the fastest rider. The a-hole is usually the one making all the noise and trying to drop everyone to prove how strong he is, but there is always a quiet one in the group that can blow everyone away and he is just out for his easy recovery ride.  I agree, you never know who is out there and there is ALWAYS someone faster.  I try to find those people and learn from them.   I hope the shoulder issue gets resolved.  And good luck to you and your wife with that Mooseman and cold water.  I'll have to go send her some love.

Andy, way to go on those 67 miles and dropping that weight.  Keep up the great work.

Linda - be careful out there on the road.  I have a friend who was literally hit by someone who intentionally opened the passenger door at her.  Sadly it was on one of the roads you and I went out on.  There are some very aggressive drivers in Wake Co.

Suzy - kicking some major butt on the swim girl.  Keep it up. Very inspiring.

Kim - I'm sure all the nutrition advise is right on, but here is a piece of my own experience I'll share.  I may be way off the mark with you so feel free to ignore me......when I do a lot of climbing I have to pay close attention to my body posture and bike form.  I spent two years "attacking the bear" as I was climbing, i.e. I was hunched was over the bars with a round back and crunched abs.  Therefore when I tried to run off the bike my abs were not having it and I would get horrible cramps.  Once I learned how to climb with relaxed shoulders, flat back and open chest (i.e. I stopped trying to kill the bear) then my abs felt so much better.

Stan - glad the baby powder worked. Don't know how excited I am about being the "pee advise" girl, but I guess I asked for that one.

John, I completely agree with you on the "hard pace."  I went for a run last night and set a new PR for my pace at that distance.  It is nothing compared to what the speed demonds of this group can do, but it was fast for me for that distance and it felt comfortably hard and good to go faster.  We are all making great progress.

Trevor it is possible that you may have dislodged a piece of the tensioning mechanism, but unless you broke one of the springs I doubt any part of it is "broken." The tension bolt tightens by turning it right. There are two springs, one on either side. The indicator on the pack of the pedal gives you the relative tension.

Are both your pedals having the problem, or only the right one? If you cannot "unstick the pedal tensioner with an Allen wrench, bring it to your LBS and let them have a look. It is usually something quite simple. I would do this ASAP, as I would not be cmfortable riding pedals I could not easily unclip from.

Our little monthly community magazine came out yesterday, and had a big section about sharing the road with cyclists. It was very interesting read(majority of it common sense to us cyclists), but for others they could probably learn alot from it.
The problem is, if you are a non-cyclist why would you read the article right?
It didn't address people swinging tennis raquets at you, or opening car doors though! I couldnt imagine if something like that would happen to me. I honestly don't think I would know how to react.

I have tried to be a considerate rider, but learned some new etiquette a couple of years ago. When riding in an area with heavy traffic, do not ride all the way up on the right side to a red light. Rather stop behind the last car to pass you, just as if you were driving a car.

Why?

Because a lot of drivers are very nervous around bikes. Having passed you once, if you pass them on the right to get up to the light, you make them pass you again. Depending on the traffic you be making the same cars pass you repeatedly. Stopping like this will go a long way to improving our relationship with drivers. Share the road goes both ways.

Having said that, let it be known that there will ALWAYS be A-holes! I was in a very rural area riding the Beaver Dam Tri bike course, no cars around, when a big pick up comes barreling along, gets up next to me and slams on his dumb-a** trucker's horn while the passenger gives me the finger! I was riding to the right of the white line. Go figure.

Doug
