I have tried to be a considerate rider, but learned some new etiquette a couple of years ago. When riding in an area with heavy traffic, do not ride all the way up on the right side to a red light. Rather stop behind the last car to pass you, just as if you were driving a car.

Why?

Because a lot of drivers are very nervous around bikes. Having passed you once, if you pass them on the right to get up to the light, you make them pass you again. Depending on the traffic you be making the same cars pass you repeatedly. Stopping like this will go a long way to improving our relationship with drivers. Share the road goes both ways.

Having said that, let it be known that there will ALWAYS be A-holes! I was in a very rural area riding the Beaver Dam Tri bike course, no cars around, when a big pick up comes barreling along, gets up next to me and slams on his dumb-a** trucker's horn while the passenger gives me the finger! I was riding to the right of the white line. Go figure.

Doug

x2 I always take my place in line with the cars.  I do keep a watch out behind me until a car is actually in place to make sure they see me.  unless it's up a hill I can out sprint them for a bit so they won't have to wait.

Another think I have been trying to instill in my wife that even if there is a turn lane or shoulder that comes and goes, it is safer to just maintain you line on or just inside the white line.  If you ride in that temporary shoulder or ride into the turn lane you just gave up your spot on the road and people don't even recognize you.  When you have to get back into the road you become a merging vehicle and have to wait for your spot, just coming back over is a good way to get run over.

Obviously if there is a constant bike lane or shoulder then by all means ride there but if not just maintain your line in the road, it is safer than moving in and out of the shoulder.

DougRob - 2009-06-02 8:41 AM Trevor it is possible that you may have dislodged a piece of the tensioning mechanism, but unless you broke one of the springs I doubt any part of it is "broken." The tension bolt tightens by turning it right. There are two springs, one on either side. The indicator on the pack of the pedal gives you the relative tension.

Are both your pedals having the problem, or only the right one? If you cannot "unstick the pedal tensioner with an Allen wrench, bring it to your LBS and let them have a look. It is usually something quite simple. I would do this ASAP, as I would not be cmfortable riding pedals I could not easily unclip from.

Doug

It is just the right one. I noticed the tension indicator doesnt move when I adjust. Or I guess I thought I was adjusting it, but its probably not moving. I may try to pop it tonight, if not LBS it is.Thx Doug.

dalessit - 2009-06-02 9:16 AM ugh, so my trip to the massage therapist today might decide if I am even going to race on Saturday now...

It's just a small nagging pain now but I have visions of it locking up 1/2 way through the swim which would be a really bad thing IMO.

While it would majorly suck to drive 10 hrs and not race (wife is racing on Sunday anyways) I guess I would rather do that than hurt myself and have to take the rest of the summer off.

This happened to me 2 years ago I was signed up for my first tri the 2nd time my back gave out on me but wasn't such a big deal then because I hadn't been really training like I am now.

Tony,  Good luck with the massage today.  I really hope it helps!

I'm in...but does it have to be at 5am?  I am not a fan of running alone in the early am hours in the dark.

Edited to add...if we do look to run that early run, then let's move it to 4:29am and be the first group to kick off the day   Smile

So I have to share this.... We are watching my sister's lab (that she recently just adopted) and he is such a snuggler.... My wife and I were working on our deck last night (well she was anyway... I was clearing not!), and if Peyton doesn't feel like we are paying attention he get's right in our business... It's a love/hate thing....  I favor the love side.  He is great, but nothing on our lab... He's the best.

Plainsman AU - 2009-06-01 6:14 PM HOLY COW...I AM NOT A RUNNER!  And I already knew that, but just went out to try to get a TT in.  First off, who am I to think that I can pace 7.5 minute miles.  Well, I did for about 2 miles  Got my first two miles in about 15 minutes, and got my last mile in about 15 minutes.  Totally blew an engine!  How in the HE!l do you people run like that?

I will post a time for team DEUCE at 28.6 which includes walking all the hills in the last mile and stopping at the water fountain at the tennis courts  I will try to give it another go before the deadline, but I have a race on the 13th, so I don't want to blow a gasket before.  I guess that is why they call it race PACE...knowing damnned well I can't run 8 minute miles.

Lesson learned.

Welcome to the world of going anaerobic and then trying to hold on for dear life.  We all have made that mistake.  Last year, I did a 6:55 for my 1st mile and it went downhill fast from there.  If you think this is the only time you will learn this lesson, think again.  It isn't bad to continue to test the speed waters.

Another good pool day for me.

PS.  My husband accused me of having more digital friends (that's you guys) than real ones.  I looked at him and said "they are real and they're fun!"  What was he thinking?

digital my pixel butt. I would be upset if the computer had emotions

Good morning fellow SWBKRN'ers....  have a pedal question. for illustration here they are...http://bike.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/products/pedals/road/product.-code-PD-5610-L.-type-.html

I think when I first got them I was adjusting the tension on the clip and may have broken it. I was new to clips and to be honest didn't really know what I was doing. My right shoe is really hard to clip out of now. Which isn't very much fun. I have played around with it the last few days, and I don't really think adjusting it makes much difference. So can I fix it? Or what others solutions are there?

take it to the LBS to have a look at. I think you have an LBS near you.

Upgrade?  Speedplays?  Keo Carbon's are way more expensive, and "user" friendly compared to speedplays...

Quote from Cycling News:

One problem that hasn't been identified with Speedplays is the springs in the cleat. Because the springs are in the cleat, and not the pedal, it's possible to constrain the springs' movement by overtightening the cleats to the shoes. Similarly, the springs tend to not snap back all the way closed after you've had them on a pair of shoes for some time (probably exacerbated by riding or walking in dirty confines). In fact, Speedplay explicitly addresses this problem with a small note in the box of new pedals that warns you not to overtighten the cleats for fear of constricting the springs. And this runs counter to the cyclist's intuition to tighten parts on the bike with a great deal of force to ensure their safety.

Unfortunately for me, I found out the hard way about this problem by standing up to close a gap in a group ride and literally launching myself over the bars and landing on my face. I suffered pretty severe injuries but fortunately, the kind folks at the local emergency room did an exceptional job of putting Humpty Dumpty back together again, and I've even gotten back into pretty good shape. And to be clear, I'm a 34 year old cat 2 in southern California with several years of experience on the bike.

I felt like it was my fault for not adequately checking and making sure the cleats were well attached to my new Northwave shoes, and I still ride Speedplays, only now with the cleats on properly. I've ridden them for five years and would never go back to the Times and Looks I used to ride. They're light, great on the knees, easy in/out, and great for cornering.

Edit... wow trisports has these on for the low price of $549.00.... Thats more than i paid for my P2!

I agree with Steve, Look Keos all the way.  I had Speed Plays and even though they are easier to get out of, they were rediculously hard for me to get into.  I love the Looks.  And even though the SpeedPlay pedal is advertised as being the lightest it's because all the weight is in the cleat on your shoe.  When  I switched I was amazed at the difference.  Besides, the Looks make a much cooler clicking sound when you clip in - just like on Versus when they cover the Tour de France.

Barry--I was thinking about you today during my Tempo run and had another idea on pacing.  I had 2 20 minutes intervals at a 7:45 pace.  I started goosing the first one up to around 7:35 and then asked myself, "can I hold this for the full 20 minutes?".  The answer was NO, so I slowed down, staying just below my anerobic threshold and held the 7:45 well. Wasn't totally easy, but I was pretty sure I could do it.  You might try that on the next TT attempt.

Suzy

Got me thinking and wondering about Anerobic thresholds.  I am thinking that mine is somewhere around 156.  Curious where most of you feel your thresholds are relative to your ages.  I am 44, and typically feel like my top of zone 2 is around 136-140 and anything over that 156 mark is hard to hold very long.

What are your numbers?

Settle down everyone......You guys are going to break me and my family making me buy new pedals!!CoolAlthough, I was looking at some stores here at pricing. What advantage would these have over my shimano 105's? And which Keos are good? Like I said the $549 were a little rich for me.

The ones you found are the newest and lightest. There is a whole line of Look Keos. Look on Craigslist for used ones. I saw apair here in Raleigh for $25. They have a Cro Mol spindle and are not carbon fiber. Each weighs 115g not including cleats.

Bike question here for all those who know more than I do (which is probably everybody!)  I went to put on my race wheels last night and realized that I would either have to take the cassette off the regular wheel (which I would have to buy the tools for) or get another cassette (which I am not opposed to).  What do you all prefer?  Are there any benefits or drawbacks?  I am trying to learn how to take care of my bike, and I may not always use the proper terms.  Feel free to laugh at me and then correct me!!!

Thanks!
