Barry--I was thinking about you today during my Tempo run and had another idea on pacing.  I had 2 20 minutes intervals at a 7:45 pace.  I started goosing the first one up to around 7:35 and then asked myself, "can I hold this for the full 20 minutes?".  The answer was NO, so I slowed down, staying just below my anerobic threshold and held the 7:45 well. Wasn't totally easy, but I was pretty sure I could do it.  You might try that on the next TT attempt.

Suzy

Got me thinking and wondering about Anerobic thresholds.  I am thinking that mine is somewhere around 156.  Curious where most of you feel your thresholds are relative to your ages.  I am 44, and typically feel like my top of zone 2 is around 136-140 and anything over that 156 mark is hard to hold very long.

What are your numbers?

LT=169 based on my last 10k and recent track test.  All my zones are based on that number.  Don't get trapped into age to determine your thresholds (aka 140-age).  I am older than dirt and still have a pretty high LT for an old geezer.

gadgetlaw - 2009-06-02 1:27 PM Bike question here for all those who know more than I do (which is probably everybody!)  I went to put on my race wheels last night and realized that I would either have to take the cassette off the regular wheel (which I would have to buy the tools for) or get another cassette (which I am not opposed to).  What do you all prefer?  Are there any benefits or drawbacks?  I am trying to learn how to take care of my bike, and I may not always use the proper terms.  Feel free to laugh at me and then correct me!!!

Thanks!

Karen

Karen this is a fair question... Not a problem on this one.  There are a couple ways to look into this.
1st) You can switch them out yourself. Yes you would need to buy the tool.. Probably a $10 tool. It is pretty easy to do.  Putting the cassette on is like solving a puzzle.  You just need to match the pieces.
2nd) You can buy another cassette (which isn't a bad idea-- but more $$$).  This has a couple benefits.  You can keep one on your race wheel, and one on your regular, or you can do what I did.... Have another one, and depending on the type of course you are riding, you can ride w/ different gearing setup... Less teeth for a flatter course, more teeth for hiller courses...
3rd) Bring your race wheel, and your bike to the bike shop and have them switch it for you in 2 minutes (alot of times they will adjust your derailuer for you as wheel).  Maybe will cost your $5-$10 (or just a tip to the bike mechanic)..

Hope this helps...

Trevor- The most common are the Look Keo SPRINT, and I think the next model up is the Carbon (which is what I use on both my bikes)....

Welcome to Team Tri Sarah!!!

Tony, sorry about the back, but it's definitely a long season with more races to come.  Rest up and heal up!

Tracy, thanks for the advice.  I was thinking about what you said about relaxing the shoulders and opening up the chest and I do think I'm guilty of tightening up, especially as I was getting tired.  I especially think because the last 10 miles were mostly descending w/ switchbacks, I was super tense as I definitely didn't want to eat pavement!  But it was so much fun!  I will definitely try that as well AND remember to drink water

Hey, who said 44 years old is "geezer" land??? I take offense for my older twin sister Suzy   The question of LT brings to mind that I have been questioning mine lately.  Last June, I did a 10K and pretty much went all out and my aHR was 164, which is what I had been using as my LT to set my zones.  Lately, even with a super hard effort (the 5K in 80 degree heat last week for the virtual tri, my aHR was only 155 or so).  BUT, my pace hasn't gotten slower, if anything, maybe it's the same or faster.  The crazy thing is that I think my aHR for the half marathon in Feb. was 155 or so.   Which can't be LT because that's almost 2 hours!  Suzy suggested a track test, but...yuck.  I suppose the best thing to do would be to do the 10k again which is in 3 weeks and see what happens!

Oh, and btw, X4 or whatever we're up to on the Look Keo's.  Trev, I think mine are actually A1's or something like that but they use the look keo cleats (red ones for me).  Super easy in and only come out when you want to

tahrens - 2009-06-02 12:46 PM I agree with Steve, Look Keos all the way.  I had Speed Plays and even though they are easier to get out of, they were rediculously hard for me to get into.  I love the Looks.  And even though the SpeedPlay pedal is advertised as being the lightest it's because all the weight is in the cleat on your shoe.  When  I switched I was amazed at the difference.  Besides, the Looks make a much cooler clicking sound when you clip in - just like on Versus when they cover the Tour de France.

Settle down everyone......You guys are going to break me and my family making me buy new pedals!!CoolAlthough, I was looking at some stores here at pricing. What advantage would these have over my shimano 105's? And which Keos are good? Like I said the $549 were a little rich for me.

I also switched from Speed Plays to Looks.  Looks are so much easier to clip into..  I think I bought mine for less than $150 including the cleats (sprints).  Also I like the grip cleats that Look makes.  I don't think Speed Play offers anything similar...

???? In English please!

Kim, do the 10K and give it everything you have.  Way better than a stupid old track test.  My guess isy our LT is much higher now based on all the training you have been doing.   In one year, my bike LT went up 14 points.

Two ways.

1. Click "Inspire Me" in someone's logs.

2.  When you open your Inspires click "Reply".  Remember to click reply otherwise you are hitting your own Inspire and the intended person may not see it.

Type away in the "Add your Comment"  box at the bottom.  Make sense?

When you go to look at someone's logs, the upper right hand corner of the day's workout is a link that says "Inspire Me"  Just click it and then write away..

Sometimes in challenges or forum bets the losing team(s) have to change their avatar to something i.e. if Team one wins everyone on all the other teams have to change their avatar to say "Tony is the greatest" or something similar.

Dropping off the radar probably until next Tuesday, it's 0551  and we are just about ready to head out the door.  Fun 10hr drive ahead of us today.  The massage went great yesterday, so back should be good to go.  Everyone have a great week.

Another pacing question.

I have a pretty good idea of my pace when I just run.  But I'm finding I have NO clue what kind of pace I'm running off the bike.  At first I thought I was just thinking too much.  But at my last tri I thought I was moving along at a slow 10 minute pace when it was actually 8:46.  Last night's brick, I was thinking around 9:30-9:45 and it was closer to 8:15.  Whats up w/ this?

Trevor...I think you made a comment a few pages back about forgetting your ipod and having a great run.  Happened to me last night.  Funny thing I didn't even realize I forgot it until ~75% of the way through.  I was to busy listening to my body.

John and Trevor:  Thanks for the Inspire instructions.

Everyone that has sent me an Inspire: Thanks!

I am still not 100%. My nose runs constantly and I have some aches. I jave no idea what this is, but Icould NOT let this week go without working out. So I swam once and ran twice this week. (Kim I am riding tonight). In my run this AM my lungs were hurting at 3 miles. It took me 26:29 to rrun 3.11 miles, That is over 7 minutes slower than my track run. I expect it to be slower, and admittedly this was a long slow run, but 7 minutes! And my lungs hurt??! I gotta get over this.

OK, whine off. Sealed

After tonights ride I plan a swim tomorrow morning and then nothing until the Tri on saturday.I am not nervous yet, but will probably be on Friday.

I left work early yesterday to surprise my kids and play with my son on his birthday. Does repeatedly rthrowing 60+ lbs. kids in the air count as a workout? Wink

Tony: Good luck at the Moosman! Lookin' forward to the race report!

Good morning...Hey John that was me. One thing I've really noticed it how much we rely on our technology to tell us how to perform for that session. Don't get me wrong, I'm a total newb so I still need my Garmin to improve my pacing, etc, and couldn't imagine a 15k run without my IPOD. But everyone once in a while, its nice to just go out and run. I think that is was keeps its enjoyable. Yes we are 'training',  but stripping away everything else makes it that much more relaxing.

Hey if you're still around GL Tony!!!

I'm at home today with my kids. Wife is going into work, and the M-I-L who normally watches them is away on holidays. So we're going to hang around this morning, and then head to a neat park this afternoon and go for a little hike a picnic. With a 4 year and 2 year, it is a 'little' hike.

I have never run with an ipod.  I should try it sometimes.  My garmin was dead this morning, and I went out for a 3.2 mile run and dang I wished I had had it.  I really pushed myself just enough the whole way, without blowing up.  Felt like I was really pushing the threshold, and wished I had the to see where I was at speed and HR.

And I am home with my son today too.  Wife is at work, and I will try to get some work done from here today.  Would like to try to get to Masters Swim today at lunch.  Might take him with me and bring some toys along.

Man, I just cannot keep up here. I'm down 8 pages or so.  I've got to get a handle on my work schedule so I can keep on top of things here!

Hope everyone is having a good week.  Did we already establish a base list of those racing this coming weekend?

So, I had a photographer friend come out to my tri on Sunday just to shoot pics of me (Not because I'm conceited, I'm hoping to secure a modeling gig for a tri apparel company... name to come after acceptance).  they turned out pretty good.  Let me know what you think, they are in my Hawk Island 2009 album - The Pure Enchantment ones.  A couple of the finish line photo's are skewed because my toes are up (heavy heel strike) as I was sprinting hard.  So I'm trying to sort through some 'everyday' type photo's and race photo's to pick out my bests.  Let me know what you think.  I'm sold on my current avatar, so I'll be adding about 5 more pics to the packet.

Fingers crossed because I some extra money for race wheels!!

Jeremy:

I looked through the photos. I would use the first and/or third photo of you on your bike from the side (The ones without the other rider in it). I would use the one(s) of you just after the finish line. The swim ones seem less likely to help getting sponsorship as there is no place to see a logo. Some of the action running shots are good, but your arms are blocking your racing greyhounds logo. Seeing the logo would, I think, be important to a sponsor. I like the way you look focused and the person running behind you looks gassed! Over all nice shots. And BTW your time rock!

I have the same feeling of running slow after the bike.  I think ithat it's because we're used to processing our environment at the speed of the bike.  So the run, while not necessarily a slow run, seems slower because we're used to things coming at us at bike speed.  Every brick I've ever done, the run pace was significantly faster than it felt at the time and sometimes faster than my normal run-only workouts.

As far as the iPod,  I'm going to try to start running with it less - especially on harder/tempo runs.  I PR'd my 5k for the group competition without it and really felt like I was more in tune with my breathing and generally focused on the run better.  It will probably take awhile to break free from the musical leash for longer, solo runs.
