Hey all, I've been negligent on the posting but have been getting some training in. Between job hunting, kids on school break and crappy New England weather it's been a challenge to get training time in. I'm dropping strength training and swapping in 3-4 workouts at the pool beginning Monday so I have a training question for the fishes out there. I met with a swimming coach in the late fall who advised me to work on balance. I worked on core strength over the winter and now need some balance drills for the pool. She said my legs tended to sink a bit and I wasn't kicking from my hips. I usually will get random workout plans from swimplan.com to use most of the days I get to the pool. Any suggestions on how I can work on balance?

HI all,

I spent a week in Panama and the vacation time with the family went well. The downside was getting there and coming back. Due to the snow storms in the area, flights were delayed and cancelled and we were concerned on not making our flight leaving Miami. I had a direct flight to Miami I purchased four months ago and the rest of the family was going to fly stand-by (my mom works for Delta).
Since there was no chance in hell my wife and kids were going to get on an airplane that Friday, we rented a car (yes I did!). We left the house at 4:30am, rented the car in Baltimore airport and proceded to drive the 19hr trek. Never again will I do it straight. We arrived in Miami around 11:00pm (45min dinner stop) and our flight left at 10am Sunday morning. Needless to say not enough time to rest.

The week went well during the stay in Panama. The temperature was hot! and humid to top it off. I contemplated the thought of swimming on the deserted beach but the current was tough and no one to keep an eye on me just in case something would happen. I got in a couple of times and before I knew it, the current was taking me out quickly!

I ran a few miles one of the days by a miracle, since I did not wake up with a hangover.
The rest of the days were spent by the pool and beach , plenty of r&r, drinks, and food.

The worst days to fly as a non-rev are Sundays and Mondays. We got back on Sunday and we could not catch a flight out of Miami. We gave up by 9pm and got a hotel room for the night.
The next day was a %$#$%@ grind. We were at the airport all day and stayed another night.
Up at 3am Tuesday and we got out on the first flight heading to Atlanta (6:30). We arrived in Lancaster, PA by 3pm and my arse was in bed by 7:30pm.

I am glad to be back and ready to start the training Monday.

Welcome back, Thomas! Sounds like you had a "fun" travel experience...at least you were able to find some warmth, though! I remember the days of flying non-rev, too...hurry up and wait, and hope, but be prepared to spend another night! Laughing

Hopefully spring will find its way to all of us soon and we can all enjoy training outdoors. Just a couple weeks from now most of us will have daylight saving time...although that only means now I'll be going to bed before the sun goes down.

Today has been a good day.  I had three workouts and I am wiped out.  I am going to give the pooches a bath and off to bed.  Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

February's totals:
Bike:14h 40m 15s  - 177.06 Mi
Run:12h 29m 15s  - 60.98 Mi
Swim:11h 15m 17s  - 37300 Yd

Pretty pleased with the volume this month...especially the run and swim. Funny to see that the total swim volume for this year is almost half of what I did in all of 2009.

At this point in my HIM training and training in general, my goal is to regain my confidence on the bike. It's slowly coming along but I'm not quite there yet.

February's totals:
Bike:14h 40m 23s  - 178.24 Mi
Run:12h 23m 57s  - 64.39 Mi
Swim:11h 21m 46s  - 37300 Yd

Just sharing my totals for the month.  I am pleased with the numbers.  I am feeling comfortable with everything right now.  It is cool to see how the volume has increased from last season.  The main thing I need to figure out is the cramping.  I am stretching more and I am trying to keep my feet relaxed during the swim.  Hope this works.

Swim:4h 41m 28s  - 8550 M
Strength:33m
Stretching:35m 05s

My numbers suck.  Most of those bike miles are on the trainer.  Two full weeks off from the swim and a full week off from training all together.  I was happy with my progress before I started with the move though.  Now, just need to finish unpacking the house and get back at it.

I would like to direct the group to Justine's Training Log.  With the DU being a regional race we had a TON of race wheels and fierce competitors.  Justine pulled (3) 7min/miles out of no where to start the race off and followed it up with a solid bike and 2nd run.  Justine won't brag on himself; 5th Clyde in this race, with his personal records all shattered he deserves a lot of credit.

GREAT RACE JUSTIN!

Feb was double the bike from January and more along the lines of where I want to be monthly.  The run was light in Feb this needs improvement.  Time in the pool was added in Feb and should be a main stay weekly in March.

I could use some advice for this crazy relay I am signed up for this coming weekend.

I am running 4 legs over a 33 hour period for a total of 24 miles.  I will run 4-6.8 miles in each leg and I will be getting naps at best, not real sleep  (Sleeping on a gym floor or in a van).

What training would you do this week? (Our team is not racing hard so I am running 9 min / miles throughout - I don't need speed I just need endorance)

What nutrition advice would you have? (the only training comparison I have to this is my century ride on the bike)  I have not attempted to train this many hours within a 2-day span before.

I KenOtt swim,

Well since I'm in the same boats as you this weekend, I'm just treating these runs as my normal run work outs. I'll run them at at about a 9 min 20 sec pace and will do some pick ups during them, but other than riding in a van it will be business as usual. This week I will have two bikes and two runs and on Friday will just swim, rather than swim and run.

As far as nutrition I will eat and do the same things I normally do. Drinks lots, some home made energy bars and fruits. (Sounds yummy doesn't it).

Frost Yer Fanny Unofficial Race Report. (I'm waiting to see the official results posted on-line. This is from memory)

1st run (3 mile) 7 m 3 sec
T1 1:10
Bike (15 miles) 21.1 mph
T2 0:50
2nd run (3 mile) 8 m 50 sec

1st run was a flat out and back, and I ran with out a watch and just ran according to feel, and I felt great. I have no idea where this run was hiding.

T1 was solid, my sunglasses had some sweat on them and I needed to take a few seconds to clean.

Bike was a 3 loop course (each loop had about 10 turns) with a lot of tight turns. There were several crashes. I rode between 22-24 but lost a lot of speed in the corners and tried not to use two much energy getting back up to speed. Just tried to be steady and consistent and spin rather than mash. Over all pleased with the 21.1 mph and felt relaxed coming off the bike.

T2 was quick for me. Came off the bike with out my shoes and hit the ground running. Put my run shoes on and was off.

2nd Run - Coming off the bike I always have a tough transition. I'm hoping this will improve when I get a tri specific bike (Using a Fuji Road bike now). Legs started to loosen up after the 1st mile, but by the time I felt I had my legs back the run was over.

Over all I was very pleased with the results. Even my second run beat lasts years best split for a Sprint distance tri.

It was also great having Ken there (First time we raced together), and his family cheering us on.

Justin ~ That is a very impressive effort!  Fatty doesn't stand a chance... except for maybe the swim!  HA! *stirring the pot font - deflecting fatty's desire to beat me towards you!*

I know you have the bike, but WOW, that run was awesome... I would have been hard pressed to hang with ya!  Once again great job.

Ken - good job as well! A little adversity in there and you still finished strong.  Keep training smart & it will all come together!

Happy Rainy Monday in these parts!

Not what I had planned on... but given the time off on the run, a stupid work schedule and crappy weather, it isn't horrible!

March & April... I expect much better numbers & better effort!  Even if the numbers are larger, the effort will certainly be!  It's go time!  *Except for today of course! HA!*

Well February was extremely run focused... For March I want to still focus on running with the 10k 26 days away *pause for mini panic attack* I need to get in the pool more and get more bike time in. I also want to do strength session 2-3 times a week.

Congrats Justin!!!
