ETA - In other news, I had all 3 sports on the calendar today but have only done the swim at lunch. Set the alarm to run early but didn't want to get out of bed. Now we have thunderstorms. I am moving my run and bike to tomorrow which was a rest day and am relaxing the rest of the evening. So there. On a related note; there was a guy at the pool who was older than me (and I'm 50) and not exactly lean, but he was throwing down really fast 100's. I was doing 30x100 and the first 10 were "fast", on 40 seconds rest. I was hitting 1:32 and he was smoking me. I was torn between very impressed and completely demoralized. I was working my but off going all out to get 1:32 and he was barely panting between his 100's. We chatted a bit. Nice guy so I went with impressed instead of demoralized. Better karma.

Bib # 2050!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did anyone else get emotional when they read their bib number? I still have wet eyes. Years of dreaming, a year of anticipation, months of training and only two weeks from today most of us will already be in Lake Placid getting ready for the big day!

Wow.

I can totally relate Jerry. I started training for triathlon four and a half years ago, knowing full well my end goal would be the Ironman distance. Been about a half a decade coming for me.

Thank you to all who gave me advice on the shoulder fatigue in my DeSoto First Wave. I do have the regular pull over, not the concept 5. My brother has the concept 5 and he hasn't complained about shoulder fatigue at all, but this is his first wetsuit. I'll be sure to try your advice out on my next OWS. The main reason I chose the DeSoto is because of the two piece wetsuit. My old wetsuit would give me the biggest rash/kiss on my neck. It was even bleeding one race. With the two piece I have zero neck discomfort.

TankBoy, I do actually have a carrera top. I bought it used and have only worn it once. I'll have to wear it on my long brick this weekend and see how I like it.

Rusty - you need to point out that your wesuit should absolutely indicate start position.  It just throws the entire balance out of proportion and would not look good otherwise...

And on the doggy paddle 3000 - well they already banned the Water Rover so I'm sure that ones next.  Dog discrimination I tell you...

Priceless! THAT was exactly the kind of thing I needed to read after a very difficult (yet strangely satisfying) 4000 in the pool... Too funny dude - way too funny!

Ah, mrbbrad - I wish I had of been there to defend your honor! I did my 10x100's in <1:05* with 30 seconds rest between each.

* Of course I was using both fins & paddles at the time.

I've had a bad last month of training. Some major changes in my work/personal life have severely impacted my ability to get long training sessions in. I've still be able to get regular workouts in but nothing long distance. I know I'm ready for the race but still getting very apprehensive.

I couldn't hit 1:05 with fins, paddles, a snorkel, and a propulsion device.

Speaking of swimming, I am thinking way too much about the swim start. I need to stay away from you tube.

Mr.Brad, What are your thoughts on swim start strategy after all your youtube analysis?  The start is consuming alot of my thinking, too!

We discussed this a bit a few pages ago and watching the videos has kind of reinforced my thinking. I plan to be in the water, slightly right of the dock (as you look down the lake), behind the main pack but in front of those lingering in the shallow water and on the shore. Need to watch out for people coming from the dock area and the beach on that side so more towards the middle. I think a lot of people want to jump on the wire so they stay close to that side. I'll go a little wide and behind the main pack but off the back a bit, not at the very back. That's where there seems to be a lot of contact because, just like crowded running races, everyone starts to move when the gun goes off, but then there's the inevitable sudden stop and subsequent pile up. That clears up pretty quickly and should be sorted out by the time I actually cross the start 30 seconds or so after the cannon.

One video I saw people waiting in the shallows for quite a while before starting to swim. I felt bad for one guy. He waited and waited, then swam right into another athlete. He stopped, let them clear, then swam right into another one. All that waiting to avoid contact and he swam right into people when he had plenty of open water around him.

It's permissible if they have an actual cowbell and hit it rhythmically with drum stick while dressed as a mariachi and standing on the roof of a white stretch limo.

Logistics question for all you LP vets.  I was just thinking, in a regular triathlon, I normally use my body glide & aquaphor before I put on my wetsuit then throw that stuff in my bag in transition.  Since we need to drop off our run/bike bags the day before... where does the morning of stuff go?

p.s.  LOVE all the funny photos!  You guys are making these last few weeks more bearable!

Thanks for the pics DC! I am so happy my dad is coming to the race because he is going to get a big kick out of dudes like the one above (he has run many marathons and I bet he would have done an ironman if it had been a little less esoteric in his day)Smile

Fred Doucette -  Posted 2011-07-06 8:19 PM    Question?? How many here are doing their very first ironman at LP this year?? I've always thought the most exciting ironman is your very first and was just curious about this group as I suspect a lot are doing their first here.

For my husband, myself, and one son, this is our first Ironman and 2nd IM for the other son that is also doing this with us.  Currently I am feeling very apprehensive that we should have worked on this longer before attempting it.  Yet we want to be able to do this with our sons, so this year it is.

I am finding that my run times are getting slower.  I think the heat and maybe tired legs are contributing.  The question that comes then is “do I still do my run by time?” or “should I go a little longer to achieve the distance that should be achieved in that amount of time?”  I also have had to go home during my runs as I consume all the fluid I can carry with me and have to refill before continuing.  It sure gets hard to go back out  after coming home.

Been having trouble with neck pain, esp. after long bike rides.  Finally went to a chiropractor, and an x-ray showed that my top 4 cervical vertebrae were displaced from a car accident years ago.  Biking in the aero position has been exacerbating the situation.

Detroit Dan – if you want to run late with us, I’m sure all the cowbells will be gone by the time we go by.  Just one idea on how to avoid them --
