Very cool.  Congratulations.

Pool work is paying off, times coming down along with RPE.  Faster easier is a good thing.

7 miles of running with fartleks all the way last night, 1 min on 1 min off.  My pace wasn't too far off race pace overall. Thought that was a good sign since that minute rest was at what felt like a slower pace.  Hey, I think that's the point of speed work!

Tempo ride on the bike tonight.  More T storms, so CT here I come.  Maybe will ride 90 mins of the Wis. IM course.

Have a great day.

Question about pacing on the swim for an IM distance race.

I wonder if I would be fine to really maximize my arms and go at a hard effort since really it's the only discipline that will tax my arms (I don't kick very hard during my swim).  It seems like it would be wasteful from a time perspective to just cruise on the swim, as I've heard some people do.  It seems like my arms would recover well enough while on the bike.

Any thoughts?

I'm doing Wisconsin later than yours.  Strategy is still coming together.  But what we have to weigh is the time savings we can make in the water opposed to the energy we use shaving a few minutes off the swim. Arms aren't the only issue.  The over-all engine we use on the swim, bike and run are the same.  My coach encourages me to think of training as building a book of matches which I will begin burning the moment I hit the water.  I have to save as many matches for the run as I can. My fitness level will let me do that. I've been focusing on going faster in the water while burning fewer matches.  Same with the bike...I am raising my FTP so I can go harder longer without burning too many matches. I can save some time on the bike. But it's the run that makes the biggest difference. Getting to the marathon able to pace myself and run is critical.  If I end up walking, I can start dropping several minutes/mile.  So, I plan to save what I can in the water while getting a decent time, give the bike my best since it is what I do best, and then survive the run to the end.  Ultimately my goal is to cross the finish line under 17 hours and avoid the medical tent.

Great news from all of you: D

The bar graph on my training log page looks pretty bad for the last month, each week I've been doing less and less workouts. Work definitely had to take priority in April but I'm ready to get back into the groove of my training. Wiping the slate clean, FORWARD MARCH!

Don't.do.it!!

Get your heart and lungs screaming at you during the swim, and when do you think you'll recover?  On the bike?  You'll be generating lactic acid that your blood is trying to carry from your arms to your kidneys and liver.  The same blood coursing through your legs once you get on the bike.  Your body doesn't really care where the lactic acid comes from, only that it's trying to get rid of it.

You're also doing this first thing in the day, when you're feeling invincible...so what seemed like a "moderate" effort ends up being quite a bit higher as the day wears on.

For me, the difference between "red line" (1:35/100) and "cruise" (1:45/100) is a projected 7 minutes (420 seconds) IF I could sustain it the entire 2.4 miles.  More likely, 3-4 minutes.  You can probably save the same 3-4 minutes being efficient in transition or the last 10K of the run if you did go too easy on the swim, bike, and first 3/4 of the run.

** That sounds like such a blast!! Congratulations on your time! ** Josh & his brother are doing a half this Saturday in Indianapolis.  I hear it's one of the biggest, so it should be a lot of fun even if I'm just going to watch.

Ditto!!  Congrats to all of you!

My training has been up and down the last couple of weeks.  Life keeps getting in the way.  I finally learned how to change a tire though - woo hoo!  I also learned how not to change a tire Laughing - tube popped on my first attempt when I was re-inflating.  I know what I did wrong though and the class instructor showed me how to prevent the problem (I had the tube pinched between the rim and tire).  So now if I get a flat, I can hopefully change it myself.

Anyone doing anything interesting this weekend?  I'm going to run a 5k with my daughter tomorrow morning.  It wasn't a planned race but since she asked me to do it with her I couldn't say no.  She's at the age where she barely talks to either me or DH (16 going on 30) so this is a big deal.  I'm looking forward to it.  Sunday morning I'm going for a long bike ride.  I need to get some bike miles in - my tri is only 6 weeks away and it's a fairly long bike for a sprint (20 miles).

Hope everyone has a great weekend and Happy Mother's Day to all the moms!

Pinch flats suck.  Gotta do-over.

I have a 12K (7.45 mile) race with the run club.  It's big event of the year.  Then a hard bike after.  Sunday, a long ride with VO2 pops.  I'd like to swim too.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks for the input Iceman and McFuzz.  I appreciate it.  After you said this I looked at the results from last year's Vineman.  I notice that people who finish within 15 minutes of one another show a real wide disparity in the times.  Some show a very fast swim/bike and then a very slow run.  Some show a slower swim/bike and a faster run.  My take from all this all is that I can choose to go fast on the swim, but I'll probably suffer on the run and maybe even on the bike.   I am a believer in learning from others experiences so I think I'll take your advice.  Much appreciated!!  It really helps me to have others to bounce this off of.

Did 4 X 30 secs @ 140%, 4 X 1 min @ 130% and 4 X 90 secs @ 120%, then did 1 X 30 mins @ 85%.  Great day of workouts

Before that, I ran with the club race first thing this morning. I slayed the course.  One of my running club mentors paced me.  Asked me what I wanted to do.  9:15 I said.  We did a bit better. Lighter and faster.  1:08 for 7.54 miles
