PS: To Yanti-11 hr trainer ride?? You crazy.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?

No, really... I mean that's not part of a plan so was it just like a personal / mental challenge or what?

I mean yeah IMWA is basically like a trainer ride but still... I wouldn't ride that much time outdoors, let alone on a trainer.

axteraa - 2012-11-28 10:07 AM Here is my current strategy that seems to be working for me.  I get up at 4:20 for both bike and swim mornings (4-5 days/week).

We make our coffee in a french press so I grind the beans before going to bed and have it ready waiting for the hot water.  I have a timer on the kettle to start boiling the water at 4:12, it takes 8 minutes.  Alarm goes off at 4:20 and I usually hear the kettle click indicating it's ready within 30 seconds.  The dogs (in another room) also hear the alarm and the kettle click and they start whining and sometimes scratching on the door.  This is very effective for getting me up!  I go pour the water on the coffee, head to the bathroom and then let the dogs out of their room and feed them.  By the time that is done, the coffee is ready and I can enjoy it while I wake up for the workout.

What! You grind beans and let them sit out overnight! Might as well get your coffee at Tim's or *$'s if that is what you are going to do! Shane

I know, it's so wrong it hurts sometimes but it buys me an extra 48 seconds of sleep!  I suppose I could put the beans in the grinder but not actually grind them until the morning.  That might be an acceptable compromise.

Why wasn't that in my training plan?

Wait for it!

Did you happen to go to Two if by Sea when you were here for Epic? By far the best coffee shop I have ever been to and the owner will be roasting his own beans in the very near future.

There are enough coffee addicts out there that I'm sure you can probably find some machine that keeps the beans vacuum sealed and then grinds them on a timer for you in the morning.  Not joking at all.

Thanks for all the feedback on dragging myself out of bed:

1)  Coffee - don't drink it, so that one's a moot point.
2)  Pets - two crazy kids (not sure the pet would survive the week - so that's a moot point)
3)  Scheduled workouts - this is the one that has promise.  I'm just winging it at the moment without a whole lot of direction (okay, no direction), so if I skip a workout I feel only a little guilty.

Resolution - need a plan, and need to get better organized.  I already put out the clothes the night before, have the trainer ready, etc., but I still slack when I actually need to get up.  I know part of the issue is getting to bed earlier, but then I lose out on spending any time with my wife once the kids are in bed.

Must...try...harder.

gsmacleod - 2012-11-28 1:03 PM Found a Strava workaround for my BB yesterday - tried it out this morning and it works great! The downside is that I don't think I'll be taking too many KOM's on my fixie but I am looking forward to trying some of the climbs that I've found in my area. Shane

So you are doing the tracking and upload right on your BB?  What did you have to do?  Not that I could likely do it on my work BB since it is so locked down.

When I was swimming, what worked for me was paying for masters. Then, when the alarm went off and I thought about hitting snooze, I would think, "I've paid $xx to swim today, need to drag myself out of bed." Not sure if it would work for you but the Scottish heritage definitely made it work for me!

Yeah, I found the directions here:

http://coachlevi.com/cycling/how-i-use-strava-on-my-blackberry/

It uses a free app (GPSLoggerII) and after that everything is pretty straight forward. Not as easy an an actual app but I guess that's what I get for being married to a high quality physical keyboard on my smartphone.

The water temps over in Busso are in the low 20s (around 70F-ish), very nice but still a bit cool for me so I'll paddle about in the ocean every day before race day.Speaking of evidence, I still firmly believe that three days worth of cooler water acclimation is far superior to zero ... my belief makes it so

The water temp was about the same when I did the race last year.  Even though that might be cool compared to what you're used to, the good thing is that it's still wetsuit legal.  So you should be good to go.

Also remember unlike other IMs, this one starts at 5:45am before the sun is up.  You'll start getting sun on you midway through the swim which feels very nice.

Re: getting out of bed, is there anyone you can agree to meet?  My best training partner (who has since stopped training ) always liked to train around 5:15-5:30 a.m.  If we had a meeting, I went 95% of the time.  If we didn't, I didn't go 95% of the time.....

No, we didn't but we are always looking for great coffee shops so I will keep that in mind next time we are there for sure!

Edit:  I just looked it up, we stayed at the Super 8 which is literally around the corner.  My wife remembers seeing it and almost went in while I was out on the bike.

Yup - that was the only reason I woke up  to swim at masters

"I already paid $50 this month! If I want to swim at a different time, I'll have to pay an entry fee at the pool! Get your butt OUT OF BED and to practice!"

I loved being at practice once I was there. Heck, once I was physically out of bed, the hard part was over.

I just crossed over the 200km mark for running this month and I'll likely get in another 14 or 15km in the next couple of days.  It's only the second time I have ever gone over 200 in a month.

I'm half Scots - definitely know where you are coming from.

Now I just need to figure out how to charge myself to ride the trainer.

Hey Spiglet! No no no ... NO 11-hour trainer ride. 11 hours is the TOTAL cycling I *might* have done this week if a bunch of last-minute crap (figuratively and literally unfortunately now, have a solid case of Bali belly, hope it's just a nasty 24-hour food bug) hadn't come up.

Looks like "official" sunrise is around 5:45ish which means it'll actually get usably light, yes, about halfway through the swim. Official sundown is actually around 7pm right now, which means it'll still be hotter for longer than I anticipated. However, I've been running in the heat of the day HERE so I think I'll be okay.

I had food poisoning for a week once.  First 3 days were MISERABLE beyond MISERABLE.  I lost a lot of weight though.  But I looked like crap.  I eventually gained it all back as well.  Anyways, not that anyone was seriously recommending that, I know.  Just thought I would share my experience in hell that one week.  lol

Wishing you a speedy recovery Yanti, hope you are better today!

I am SORE today, I crashed pretty hard (twice) on my mtn bike yesterday, the first time I clipped out and my shin got the worst of it, the second time I went down hard on my hip/butt. I have a nice purple knot on my shin today, thought I would have a bruise on my butt but there's no mark, just real painful internally I only went out for an hour ride!
