I used DeSoto tri shorts the last two years, but I've lost a bunch of weight, and they're old. My local store Tri Lab has a nice kit, but for the life of me, they can't figure out how to stock any sizes but XS apparently. Probably go back to the DeSotos, but anyone have any other options they like? I'd kinda like to race in a jersey with logos etc., sick of all black. I really like the DeSoto stuff. In fact, one of these just arrived in the mail today. Arend, how well does that float pad float? If you had two pairs of shorts in your hand (one with the float pad and one without) and held them 2 feet under water, do you think you would feel the difference as in the one with the float pad would be pulling upwards to the surface? Would you be able to easily tell if you didn't know which hand was holding the one with the float pad? I don't doubt their claim that the pad floats on it's own but I would be very surprised if there is enough there to make any noticeable difference at all when swimming with it. I'll probably wear it for my trainer ride tomorrow to see how it feels and for a run some day next week. I doubt I will get a chance to swim in it until open water season returns (June'ish) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() x2 on the DeSoto stuff - I love their 400 mile shorts. But I hear you about wanting some color in your kit. Last year I had a "Swim Bike Mom" red, white and black kit that I liked the look of - just not the fit or feel, so back to the Desotos. For us womens, Betty Designs has a bunch of very nice, colorful kits that I like the look of - but I've never tried their stuff. Looking at the site, it looks like they may have mens stuff as well. Good luck on the marathon Kevin! Have a great time. Arend - the weather is wild here as well - and I'm not able to run at all outside because the roads (we have no sidewalks here) are so jacked up... Life has gotten crazy here, so all but bike and run have dropped off the calendar...I'm hopeful that March will ease up a bit and allow for some swim and yoga. It's interesting to me when push comes to shove which sports fall vs. which ones I still manage to make the time for. How about you all? Which is the first to go? |

When you hear people talk about how out of shape kids are today, IT'S TRUE! More and more Physical Ed is being taking away from schools and it's catching up with us. Five different classes have run the mile and only four students have gotten below 8:30! Ok I'm off the soap box, but when my 8 and 10 year old can run faster than my high school students it drives me nuts!
Ugh! I feel the same way...I have a 5th and 8th grader. My 8th grader just ran the mile in 5:28 in his Vans, LOL, he said there was noone even near him. Last year I helped organize a 5k fundraiser for my son's grade level (4th), we tied it in with science and math lessons by graphing the data from our "training" and the race. We trained for 6 weeks. I was floored by how many parents requested that their kids sit out...so many kids had health problems that prevented them from running- at all. We didn't expect everyone to run 5k but they could have run 400m, so many kids couldn't even do that and their parents seemed fine with it. On the flip side...how cool was it that 30 kids actually completed the whole 5k! My youngest son has asthma but we emphasize that he takes care of his health, having him sit at home and not participate in exercise is not going to help him....I tell him that he will just end up with all sorts of other issues from being sedentary. It is very easy for me to get on my soap box too....and I could go on for pages....the school that I work at has cut recess down to 12 minutes per grade level of outside play...factor in getting into line, using the restroom etc and they maybe get 8 minutes of outdoor time. They get PE once per week for an hour because we share the PE teacher with another school...anyways, I will stop, LOL. Thanks, its sad but in Florida, they can do PE in thier homerooms (Elementary School) how pathetic is that!
Kim That trips on my bucket list Keri Rob Jasen? We ran around the whole school everyday when i was a kid..... and the field really was BIG. That is what got me to really love running...my identity was wrapped up in being a fast kid it made me known. I didnt realize so many kids were that out of shape so young. I got back into running again this last time around by accidentaly running most of a 5k in flip flops because needed to meet a friend up the road and got caught the roadblock for that race!! that made me remember how much I loved racing when i was younger. so....long story short I am starting a year round running program here for parents and kids who want to compete and win , as well as the kids that are slower but would still benefit from a life time sport. There are several running clubs in other parts of town, but i don't have time to drive to those club runs...... and work and train and be a mom, right? My job today got cancelled so off to ride......sons competing mtn bike sunday so thats my long ride lost that day. |

I mostly like it because it's much more comfortable to me on a long (IM) bike ride versus a fleece. And unlike bike shorts, it seems to dry out fairly quickly. |

BTW, I bought this because you initially posted about it Marshall (I think it was you...) - I probably wouldn't have known about it otherwise. Therefore I blame you for any pain it inflicts. |

But now that I might be able to actually wear one. Hmm, thinking. You go white or black? I went white. It's supposedly not see-through when it gets wet and having tried it on, I think that may be true (but I didn't actually wet it). I think you know how I feel about De Sotos, Axenhots Nice work on the 20x50 @50, too, with a lot of kick. Any IM? I might have to try that next week. |

Dang its long. In a few hours ill be sitting for 8 hours though and wishing i could walk it I did the CA-Duluth-Amsterdam-Arusha route in 2000 or 2001. Six weeks of camping safari, def. roughing it ... and I brought my mom along! Did a lot of hiking, too, and we had two runners amongst us ... some of the most gobsmackingly gorgeous scenery ever, ever, ever. And nothing beats opening your tent flap and seeing a lion face ... or having a Cape buffalo "sneak" (they're surprisingly quiet!) up behind your deaf mother while she's taking a dump. Also, Tusker beer is the BOMB. Avoid the swill called Konyagi at all costs. HAVE A BLAST! |

Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So ... dis schiznit is getting real! Yesterday was the last long session--an 8-hour IMNZ bike course simulation on the trainer. Position, nutrition, gear, everything is dialed in to a T (yes, I wore my new aero helmet and sunglasses inside). It went great and I intend on doing that exact same ride, real time, in 16 days. So now, LESS is more, maybe with a bit more oomph, but that's it. Anything in doubt gets left out. I'll also be on a bit of a goodwill tour regarding Indonesian-NZ relations. (Hm, maybe I'll have a foreign affair ... heh) It's all getting very exciting as people here (and in NZ, apparently, an Ironman not getting an IMNZ transfer after a crash made headlines) actually read the news, and there seem to be a lot of people more excited about the possibility of my being the first Indonesian Ironman than even I am! My dad was also one of the Founding Fathers (though we had several Founding Mothers as well) so I guess it's one nice big feel-good story. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH So I'm excited too, and fervently avoiding crowds and any food I don't prepare myself. Anything to keep in mind for taper? Don't go nuts (too late), don't overdo, don't gain too much weight ... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yet another Desoto fan here, from head to toe. I use their 400 mile bibs for road cycling and the tri bibs for training on my tri bike. I have found my particular tri set up to be very comfortable without the padding the 400 mile provides. I race in our team kit, but for IM I just wear the team top and Desoto riviera bottoms. Their running clothes are also great, and I have all of their wetsuit pieces (bibjohn, pullover, speedvest, and speed tube) all of which are awesome. I will say that I have 7 pairs of bibs, all 3 years old or less, and the padding has come unstitched on almost every single pair. This post has reminded me that when I talked to Desoto last fall about it they said all I had to do was send them in and they would stitch them back up - so I need to do that ASAP. |

This website has some 2012 stuff on for pretty good prices if you happen to fit in the sizes they have left. It shows the colorful stuff they have - I have a pair of 400 mile bibs in the pattern with the hexagons. I'm tempted to get the matching tri top. http://www.trigeeks.ca/DeSoto_2012.htm Edit: forgot the link Edited by axteraa 2013-02-15 4:36 PM |

It may not be the "perfect" plan for everyone, but it should do a pretty good job for most people. I also like how he goes into explaining how each run should be executed instead of just listing a given mileage. |

Runnersworld.com has awesome resources. You can create a training plan based on where you are starting. It's called smart coach. My husbands coworker used it to complete her first 5k and now is training for a half mary. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So made it to Jacksonville Florida yesterday. The folder was here when I arrived so after getting settled, took it out for an easy spin. Today I was up at the crack of dawn and did a spin and easy run. Trying to settle the nerves for my first marathon tomorrow. Doing the expo later and meeting my daughter. Drove the start yesterday and picked up my Gatorade, water and snacks for the run. From what I saw, the course should look really cool. Signs going up, pink balloons, getting pretty stoked for this. I'd love to finish under 5 hours, but for the first one I'll be happy to finish. As long as it's not dead last. second to last I'll take. |
