Sensei![]() | ![]() jdwright56 - 2008-05-30 8:58 AM My question was more stating that I take the reason seriously, but not the actual race. I mean, I want to do well, but I don't svitz about it, you know. So my question was, what are you meaning by serious - the race itself or what is behind doing the race? I was just trying to clarify what you were asking. Asked and answered. You said 'yes - you take it seriously'. (I'm paraphrasing, of course). Again - doesn't matter what I consider serious, so I won't define it. It's subjective and you/others have responded based on your/their own definition. Edited by Aikidoman 2008-05-30 11:22 AM |

How serious are the TANers about Triathlon? I don't want this to sound like all the other threads about "how much do YOU do" or "how long do YOU go". But I'm curious about how seriously TANers take the sport. I think I read 2goggs was doing his first HIM soon and signed up for an IM? I have completed a couple HIM's and will most likely do an IM this fall. BUT, I'm also thinking of hanging up the bike shoes after that and start up my next hobby (not sure what that is yet - maybe smoking and drinking and eating good food)
I think you have to define the term serious. I do tri's in the name of my charity. I do them to raise awareness for what I believe in and to give others hope. I do them because I don't want anyone - especially myself - to forget what I went through, and I do them in remembrance of my donor. Of all of those things - I am VERY serious. Why did I pick triahlons - because I really hate to run adn so marathons seemed out and triathlons are seen as the "ultimate endurance sport" so it sends a big message. Am I really good at them? Not so much. Will I get better? Can't get much worse. Will I continue to do them? As long as I am physically able or until everyone that needs an organ has one to get without having to question whether they will live long enough to get it. You decide if that is "serious" or not. That's kind of an open ended word that can be defined in a lot of ways. Nah, It's not up to me to define it or decide whether you take it seriously or not. It doesn't matter what I think with regards to your feelings about it. I was just asking for some feedback, you said you take it seriously. Fine with me. I train to race, but know my limitations. I have completed a 1/2 IM and an IM, and getting ready for another 1/2 IM in July. So, not really serious to podium since I do it because I enjoy it. |

I saw SO many people on bikes in NY and DC. I would do that in a heart beat if I had the chance..... |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It will be awhile to see the savings on gas though....it cost me 64.00 to fill up this morning. A tank in town last about a week. When you add races on this summer though then you have an extra tank each time you race. This bike costs more then I was thinking at first but it has gotten great reviews and comes with all the stuff I need...even the lamps. |

You almost need to add $50 - $100 as part of your "race budget" just to get there these days. I'm SO close to riding my motorcycle to work now. It's tough because I need to have level of "presentability" and be able to go to meetings at a drop of a hat. A motorcycle is not as condusive for that (especially when I have to drag construction plans around) |

He went out and bought a PVC tube with end caps and strapped it to his bike. Would keep his plans in there. Also kept a change of clothes at the office incase his pants or shirt, etc got dirty on the ride. |

Also kept a change of clothes at the office incase his pants or shirt, etc got dirty on the ride. That's all well and good, but we need to relax dress codes in the office some if we want people to not drive - either use motorcycles or their bike. I probably would not ride a motorcycle... too scary. Falling off a bike at 15 mph hurts enough as it is. I could see perhaps buying a Vespa scooter, though. Being able to go 30-35 down in the city would be a significant time savings for me. I'd be more afraid to ride a bicycle or a scooter than a motorcycle. At least on the motorcycle you can go the same speed as traffic. When you're going that slow along the road, all those cars are whizzing by you, and are forced to go out around you. If there's no room, you can be damn sure they're gonna hit you instead of the car coming the other way... I had a cute little Honda Rebel 250 but when I put 500 miles on my bike and only 75 on the rebel I decided I would sell it....so I sold it last summer |

I also worry about the heat here (sweat), the smell of exhaust, dust, etc. Maybe just do it and see how it goes, no? I have to admit, I also like the "comfort" of the car. XM radio, AC, place to put my coffee..... Plus I feel less than "alert" when just getting up and after a long day at the office. I know HTFU and just excuses.... But you know, if it hits the pocketbook, it causes change. Edited by Aikidoman 2008-05-30 11:54 AM |
