I have always used the animal pak for weight training. I just picked up some glyco maize but I am looking for some good recommendations. Also any tips on a good diet plan or where to find one? I need to lose weight while I improve performance and endurance. Other than a multi vitamin - I don't take anything. Never really tried any of that stuff so I can't offer any feedback there. On the diet side I have found that instead of dieting, controlling my snacking, quality of food, and portion sizes is what does best for me. When I am trying to cut some pounds I will often eliminate nighttime snaks and any soda during the week. I give my self the opportunity to do a little snacking on the weekends but keep it under control. The only way I can control unhealthy eating at work is to pack what I eat, not eat out or hit the vending machines. So a typical work day for me includes oatmeal and a bananna in the morning, a cheese stick for a late morning snack, a lean meat sandwhich for lunch along with a raw vegtable and a fruit, an afternoon snack of fruit and then an apple in the car on the way home (which helps me limit how much I eat at dinner). We try to eat good at dinner but that is pretty hard because we have kids that don't like to eat a wide variety of food and we have so many nighttime activities that we often end up with a quick meal (mac and cheese and fish sticks) instead of a healthy meal so portion control is important. As for diets, I have never done well with them. For me, they have gotten me to loose weight but I find that I don't enjoy eating what they say I can eat so it is much easier to get grumpy and mentally weak and sneak some things that don't belong on the diet. Earlier in the thread someone posted a suggestion around calorie counting that I thought was really good. I think it was Sam? Essentially, make sure the calories you burn are more than the calories you consume. Sorry for the rambling...you probably didn't want to know my daily menu!!! Just trying to give you a feel for what I do. George Yeah I have cut out eating out excpet on Sat evening when my wife and I will either go out or I will eat a normal meal. I dont drink pop/soda and really only drink tea and coffee as my vice. I need to get a food scale I think. I just want to make sure as well that I do not hurt myself. |

I know it makes a difference...not trying to say it does not. I am just wondering if anyone has done the same course with and without aero bars and if they have what kind of time differences did they see. Not quite the same test, but I did ride my 39 mile loop from last summer yesterday on my new TT bike vs. last year (on my birthday) on my road bike with clip on aerobars. Granted, it was windy that day and not too windy yesterday, and I finished the loop in 2:12 vs. 2:30! Next test would be to take the aerobars off and ride the road bike, but after yesterday, I'm not sure when I'll ever ride my road bike again! I felt really FAST, especially on flats, new gearing 53/39 w/ 11/28 vs. 50/34 w 12/25. Not sure how much of that is being in better cycling shape now than last April, but daum, that was good average of 1.5 mph faster at least. I haven't been cycling enough lately to think that it's the engine, it's probably mostly the new carbon TT ![]() Kim: That is great, and I am sure that most of that is you!! Robert AWESOME KIM!!! Robert, I better be faster, a lot faster, in Lubbock this year... unless andy rides and you swim. ;-) John -- You will be because the Womens 70-74 Winner from last year will be gunning for you again! |

Does travelling the whole 75 miles from Milwaukee count? I am on the volunteer list this year for IM Moo....does that count? I would prefer a gyro from the "Parthenon" to any cupcakes also; I know, now I am just being difficult. I am doing the NorthFace Endurance challenge later in Oct at Kettle Moraine Park, so no other Oct races for me! Ok, you want your gyro? Sign up for IMWI'11!!! I am guessing that is why you are volunteering, right? George--Thanks! I don't think John would have the guts to show up in a bow.....so no worries. Mark--I use several supplements but they were perscribed by a naturopath based on some testing I had done. There are a couple that I think everyone should consider taking 3g of Omega 3 fish oil, Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) and a good quality multi-vitamin. I also ingest 3g of glutamine post workout, but that is simply a personal preference. I'm in the George camp in that i don't follow a specific diet, but when I want to lose weight, I usually portion control and start cutting about half the crap out of my diet. I love to eat so deprivation is not on my top 10 list! Tracy--I have a friend who swears by the Wii Yoga. She is trying to get me to buy one, but I have so many other gadgets that I have resisted. WIll be interested to see what you think. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi computrainer experts, did any of you have trouble having your computer recognize the computrainer from the USB port? My computer does seem to find or recognize it even though I installed the driver a few times. Any suggestions? On a second note, I had a PR in HR today. Ran a little over 7.5 miles and kept my avg hr for my last mile under 165 going my usual speed. I felt great, for the first time in a long time. I concentrated on my core and hip rotation and my foot placement/follow through. When I didn't rotate properly my hr rate went up and when i did it went back down. It was pretty cool experience. |

If you have Vista or Windows 7 then you need to buy the new FTDI converter which goes right from the stereo cable to usb. The original one they offered for years was the sewell which only works with XP, it won't work with Vista or anything newer. (this is the one I have, works great on XP) They were offering one in between the Sewell the current FTDI one but I can't remember what it was called, it also works with Vista and Windows 7, they don't list it anymore but I am sure I could find it in their forums if you don't have the sewell or the FTDI one. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tahrens - 2010-01-12 9:59 AM Mett - I use a Cyclops Fluid Trainer and love it. Very quiet. Keep you eyes open for sales. Steve - with the exception of a few bloody noses and black eyes from my college sport, this is the first real injury I've had. However I love the sport and I love the training. I don't do well with exercising just for exercising sake, but if I get fit and healthy as a side effect then I am all over it. The best part of this lifestyle is all the inspirational people. My favorites are the Sister Madonna's and Team Hoyts of the world; the BOP age grouper that is 30 lbs overweight and sprinting accross the finish line for all their worth with their family cheering them on; the veterans that start off the Army Ten Miler and dig deep to find the guts to suffer through the course with missing limbs, having my girls draw me good luck cards at school when I have a race that weekend.....that's the good stuff. Well said Tracy! After my first tri in 2007 I had some aches and pains and found the couch again for 2 years... Not sure why I gave in (up) then... I have had a couple of minor hurts and then my MCL that sat me out of running for about 2 months, but now I am back at it... Don't think I am going to quit this time, especially with a support group like this one! Edited by ashort33 2010-01-12 8:43 PM |

On the desktop that I connect mine to it has a serial connection so I don't use the usb adapter. But I did just get it set up on Sam's old laptop and all I did was go to sewell's website and download the latest driver, plugged it in, did the detect com port using the coaching software and it came right up. |

Are you setting an incline on the treadmill? Common belief is that you need to set the TM at 1% incline to simulate a flat outdoors run. Second, running outside is a little harder due to wind resistance, etc. Third, pacing is harder outside, you were probably running faster than you do on the TM, I know I always do. You are doing fine. Just keep it up! There is nothing wrong with working your way through run/walk sequences to get your running up to par - I think all of us had to do it at one time or another. |

Probably a couple of things at work here: first, I always take a little longer to get my breathing under control when it's cold outside. I feel out of breath, almost like I'm at altitude. I think that's something that you can adapt to, however. In any case, I wouldn't worry about it. Second, as Andy alluded to, common wisdom is that you should set the treadmill to a 1% grade in order to mimic the effort of actual running. I can't prove it, but I believe that you use slightly different mechanics when you run on the treadmill vs. outside. When I run outside, I can concentrate on propelling myself forward and driving with the legs. However, when I switch to the treadmill and the surface is moving backward under me, I think I run slightly differently and my perceived exertion is actually more than the equivalent speed outside. Eventually, after a few indoor sessions, I adapt and then when I switch back to outside, suddenly running outside is more difficult. I guess all of this is to say that you shouldn't be discouraged at all, and it may just take a few sessions outside for you to feel comfortable with the breathing and the effort. |

If you were to drop a line vertically from the front of your saddle (it's difficult to tell, do you have the Adamo?), how far behind the bottom bracket would it be? You might be able to push the seat forward and raise it just a little bit, which would move your forearms a little more vertical for better support, as well as maintaining your nice 90 degree angle in your elbows/shoulder/trochanter. You look comfortable and powerful... how does it feel? |

I guess all of this is to say that you shouldn't be discouraged at all, and it may just take a few sessions outside for you to feel comfortable with the breathing and the effort.Question: I went running outside today for the very first time. I was only able to run for about 2-3 minutes before having to walk for 2 minutes, then run 3 minutes, walk 2, etc. I was so bummed. I'm up to 7 minutes running on the TM at the gym before I have to walk. What gives?! I do have to say that it was pretty cold, and my lungs felt as though they couldn't get enough oxygen....like the air was thin or something. I was heaving. I feel as though I've taken one step forward and two back in terms of my run. How long does it take before I can start to run at a respectable pace outside? I'm not looking to be Wonder Woman, just not gimpy wheezy woman who has to walk as much as run.I'm kinda bummed. I thought I had made more progress than what I saw today. Agree with everything above and would add one thing. When you're running on a TM you set the pace and the belt is movng for you, when you are running outside you have to gauge the pace. When I first started TM running and then transitioning to outside, I was always gassed because I started out too quickly. I only set my incline at .5% and honestly can hold the same or better pace when transitioning outside. It might be from several years of running, but do what is comfortable on the body and don't force a 1-2% incline if it doesn't feel right. |
