Anybody notice Wiggins' comment about his weight loss and the need to essentially train your body to perform on less calories.  Sort of sounds like the occasional training in a fasted state discussions.

I remember a thread on ST about a guy who had a cycling team home staying at his place in Arizona and he commented that they hardly ate anything at all. They also rode easy pace almost all the time.

I remember that as well.  Lots of salads & shakes.  I think it also mentioned something like when those guys weren't riding, they didn't move much.  They didn't walk anywhere.  I'm pretty sure they weren't having a steak quesadilla, a basket of chips and two bowls of salsa for lunch like some people I know.

mmmmmm steak quesadilla

I never want to see the Schleck brothers without a shirt on quite frankly.

OK, just a post that I am well and truly done in TT.  I think I finally get why experiened people leave.  It's really ridiculous how good advice gets slammed.

it's the swimming thread.  Funny, E=H20 linked to it on an OWS board I am on.  The responses are in many cases quite different, as in, yeah, maybe you shouldn't race if you don't know how to swim

Initiating self imposed TTban....

Just dropping a note - if you guys see a Mark S. stalking you on Strava, that's me.  I didn't join the group there, since I'm not part of this mentor group, but it's fun to track more triathletes and I knew Fred was on there.

Quick bio:

39 years old, about 6'2", 160lbs.  HS / collegiate water polo player (don't go thinking I'm a fast swimmer though -- those days are long past).  I've lived most of my life in the Pacific Northwest except during my short time in the Navy.

I cycled and ran a lot in years past, played soccer at a decent level as well.  I didn't really get started in triathlons until a couple years ago.  I'm primarily focused on IM distance now, and the bike is my happy place.

I'm currently signed up for IM Canada this August and IM Lake Tahoe next year.

The sob story: this year has been nonstop health problems so my current goal is to make it to the start line.  I had non-race-related digestive problems, surgery, and topped it off July 1 with a pulmonary embolism.  Yes ChrisM and Fred probably remember my poorly thought out post on that thread topic awhile back.  Eating humble pie now.  But the good news is, I'm still here.

- Mark

Fred D - 2012-07-10 3:54 PM I got asked a really cool question by email today.... A guy who is helping a friend coach some professional crossfit athletes is asking for advice of how to coach PROFESSIONAL level CF athletes to do a tri. 700yd swim. Single speed bike on sandy paths and then a 7 mile very hilly run. Remember this guy is not pushing Crossfit on us, but rather trying to get his athletes who do CF to a CF specific tri among other events. These will be much more muscular athletes with heavier odyssey mass. What advice would you give?

I have to think the focus would be on the swim.  Most people have biked at some point in time and everyone ran at least as a little kid.  They're going to be in good shape and get the B/R done.  Might need some pointers on pacing but that's about it.

The swim is hit or miss though.  Some folks have NO swim background.  You'd have to evaluate them case-by-case and see where to start with the lessons.  Once they get the basic technique down I'd have no worries about their fitness.

Welcome Mark!  For my own selfish reasons...always good to have another strong biker in the group and to track on strava.

I saw the recent threads, and it seems after one week of good training related posting (after Michael's "do we need another forum"), BT has gone right back to silly arguments that I rather not get caught up in.  I'm still browsing TT, because I find those threads comical when not involved, but I'm trying to force myself to only post in threads that are actually training related.

As for the CF athletes...I agree that most or all of the focus is going to be on the swim.  CF is a lot of power and explosiveness...and I imagine the athletes will try to power their way through the swim and gas out in 50 yards without proper instruction.

Btw... our 2 meter man in college water polo was a beast.  About 5'9", 245lbs not an ounce of fat.  If he can swim, anyone can

Coaching pro crossfit guys... if I heard one word about "too much muscle, I sink" - I'd be showing them videos of the U.S. water polo team.

Thanks... I'm sort of limited now.  Power is down as you might expect after a lung issue.  I have the green light to exercise again but I'm greatly reducing my number of outdoor rides to limit risk, since I'm now on anticoagulation meds.

That said, I've had more car accidents in my lifetime than bike... knock on wood.

Tell me more.  I am a coumadin lifer, had PEs in 2009 and again in 2010. Ah, just checked your logs.  been there, done that.

Yeah mine is traceable to one of two things: surgery or another injury I had to my calf.  So at this point they're calling it acute and I should be off medication in half a year or so.  With luck.

Welcome Mark!!

I am glad to see this mentor group growing.

Yeah I figured we'd grow it a bit as we have lost a few along the way as well.

This thread can be like a different format of try talk IME where we debate stuff more civilly.

I am considering asking Kaiser Souze (Gatordeb) to join as well.

That is when you know you had one beer too many

My other major thoughts were here, but lemme know if you think I should add more:

1. Swimming in salt water tends to be vey dehydrating, so ensuring good fluid intake would be important. Fins also beat the crap out of my calves and achiles so I would be careful not to kick like a madman.
2. Biking in sand is tough and would need to be practiced Beforehand.
3. The biggest issue is the run. It is about 7 miles and has sig. Climbing. My guess is that the athletes you coach will have sig. More muscle mass than a triathlete like myself and this definitely raises the challenge on running, specifically with lots of climbing. Most competetive triathletes are built like myself 6', 160lbs and the reason is that the lighter you are the easier climbing is on the bike, but even moreso on the run. Clearly CF athletes need to be much strong and have more mass so this build would be inappropriate for them, but carrying that extra muscle mass will make it a very challenging event. Practicing some run hill repeats would be reasonable.

I think this race sounds fun and an elite CF athlete will find it a challenge for the points in #3 above.

I have no doubts I would be pathetic on many of the strength challenges involved in a CF event, so definitely much respect for those guys.

Best of luck and let me know if I can help in any other way.

Fred, my thoughts.

Hydration should be a goal thru out.  I would tend to ensure a electrolyte drink or some nutrition is taken.

700 meter swim is not going to see the dehydrating effects say as a 2.4 mile swim.  Although the 700 meter swim may still take longer than a average triathlete

Swimming with fins promotes good ankle flexibility.  Still a weak kicker can have a lot of trouble with fins.  So practice with a kick board not only on the stomach but back and sides.  Land exercises such as leg lifts and flutter kicks.  Work the core!

Ridding a mountain bike with deflated tires on grass will simulated the resistance on sand.  Throw a backpack on with 25lbs of weight for added resistance.  Grunts love stuff on their backs weighted.

I have seen the hills at Camp Pendleton and they are no joke.  Run in grass/sand again with back pack on with weight for added resistance.  This is tough training but when the race take place it will seem easy.
