So I since I just got my USAT card and did my first race I wanted to check my rankings... No dice... How many races do you have to do before they start ranking you?
I forget the exact system but I think you have to do three sanctioned events to get a pacesetter number. Then the next year you can be ranked (not sure if you have to do another three events or not though). Here is a link that describes it in more detail (it is actually fairly complex or at least seems that way to me):

Hope that helps,

I have spent a lot of time understanding the system because it should be fun to watch ones improvement via the rankings (and see your name).

For Du's one needs two races.  For Tri's it is three races.  The races need not be the same length.  If one does more races, the best 2 or 3 are averaged.  One can look up the ranking for each race too using the USAT rankings search page.  Races are loaded around the beginning of each month are lag real time results by 3-4 weeks.  So around the start of May races through the end of March were loaded.  I have not seen any of us ranked yet, since we have all races from April on.

I am shooting for a 75+ for my first year.  David ought to break 90.  The scale is linear so 75 is not that great really.  A 50 would imply a finishing time twice as slow as the 100 point par time.  So if par time is 2 hours, a 95 point performance would imply a finish in about 2:06 and 75 point performance would be all the way back at 2:40.  I've gone as far as calculated my own score (using the USAT posted formula) and anticipate that I am right now at 76.7 or so.  I am sticking with a goal of 75 in case I am off.  If the USAT has me around 77 though, I'll up my goal to 80, but that would be a big stretch due to the linear nature of the score.

I think you can get ranked the first year by comparing you to the pacesetters.  Of course, first year individuals won't be pacesetters themselves until the next year.

How tall are you? You sure don't look like the typical Clydesdale! I guess that's why you can so readily win that category. Perhaps if you hydrate and carbo up really well, you can step on the scale the morning of and then decide. Have a great race!

Earlier this week I asked training by time vs. distance and got mixed responses and came to the conclusion that it would be good to do both.  I've always timed myself but set a distance goal.

Last night I set out to run 30 minutes around the neighborhood to get a run in while my wife was on her way home from work.  I loved it.  I just ran randomly throughout the hood... worked on hills, changed paces several times, and worked in a 1/4 miles sprint at the end.

So, I think mixing it up is going to be good for me.  It's always nice to put yourself through that time trial but I think the distance is good just so your body is moving for a certain period of time so fatigue becomes less of an issue.

Thanks all!

Very cool and sounds like a great run. And since I don't think I ever responded to your earlier post, here goes:

I do both...some bike and run sessions (long endurance sessions, typically) I tend to focus more on distance. For shorter runs (more speed or recovery focused) tend to use time as an indicator. I often do these on the treadmill because it is so easy to do focused, specific intervals on the TM. Of course, in all cases pacing isn't far from my mind. It just isn't the main priority while I'm doing a base-building long training session. So, I guess I do both dependent on the type of session and where I'm at in my plan. Again, base building for me is all about building endurance and getting my fitness level up and when I transition to a build phase I add in more pacing work to the mix...

Hope that helps!

I am 6'2".  There was a thread about 6 weeks ago that had at least 100 posts about the whole idea of guys like me doing Clyde.  The guys who knew most about the issue stated that the category was created for people like me not overweight folks.  But others felt like only overweight folks should compete in the category.  So that is the debate and my reason for so far doing age group.

I always weight about 191 at competition time (thats necked of course).  I'd easily go 193-194 in shoes and uniform.

thats how i do about 95% of my workouts, it keeps things lot more fun and keeps me coming back, running i know most of the distances where i run (i run by time but keep track of distances where to make sure i am getting enough in or not overtraining, i have a fine line between too much and not enough run milage right now).

cycling is purely by time, swimming by distance.

hope everyone had a great weekend training/racing/haning out with family. i just got back from the TTT last night, and am absolutly flattened. guys that i can clobber in short course stuff were moving past me like i was standing still in the half on sunday. will get full reports up soon.

I'd say its up to you. Pick your category. Fortunately, you are tall enough to fit either category and also be be physically fit. The guys who I've seen win running races in the Clydesdale category have been big guys like you not the less fit heavier variety. How did your race go this past weekend, did you do the duathlon?

Personally, I'm good. This week I'm taking it a bit easier than normal to prep for my tri on Sunday. But it is going well and I feel good. No injuries, no issues and just trying to get things in order so my transitions go smoothly and can go out strong. First goal is simply to finish but I'm also going to shoot for 1:30 which should be very doable unless the wheels totally fall off ;-) How are you feeling after TTT? Anybody else racing this weekend?

No real injuries... Just fighting a case of the blahs... I just don't feel like training at all. So I will probably force myself to run either tonight or tomorrow morning. I just need to stick with it and keep the spirits up.

David, It was great meeting you at the race. And dang your fast. Everytime I saw you , you were just flying along. Hope you are recovering well. I am still in recovery mode...swollen stuff, feet/ankle and lower legs but not any pain. So I'll be back at it after this weekend. I just love that race and even if I did finish almost last it is just a great feeling to finish alive

Can't wait for next year.

Physically good here too.  Dealing with some mental crap because my parents are in a tough spot and may be moving out of state.  Training helps.

Chris, we might see a lot of each other on the course and not even know it if we don't catch up before hand.  I'm down to 197 lbs so I ended up emailing the RD and switched from clyde to AG which puts us in the same wave.  I'm realistically shooting for somewhere between 1:23 and 1:30.  1:23 would be a string of event PR's and 1:30 would be about par.

Question for the group:

To fully taper or not to fully taper... that is the question.  I've tapered the swimming and running just because I want to be fresh for Sunday as every race is still an "A" race for me.  BUT, I have my weekly club ride tonight.  I usually ride with the A-AA.  We don't really have a B-BB group but I could shorten the ride or ride slower.  I personally think I would be ok either way with a full 3 days off the bike after tonight.  Any thoughts or maybe WWYD?

Hope everyone is doing well.

go for the ride, its a short enough race you will be fine. i would personly go for it. i'll do long/hard bike wokrouts up to withing 3-4 days of a key sprint race (rides from 2-4 hours, tempo paced stuff).

you should be fine.

I've been in the same kind of mood as Justin and Chris. I went out of town for the weekend and really did not get much accomplished athletically and have few excuses. I backed off of my running a bit the past week, a little lower back trouble I wanted to nip in the bud. Swimming is going well. Have not gotten nearly the miles in on the bike, but I think this week will be better.

I did try out my wet suit in a 600 m swim in the lake. My arms felt reasonbly free in the water but I did feel a little tight around the chest. I probably should of taken advantage of the water access.

I am almost positively going to never race Clyde.  My race this weekend went well I think.  I have completed a race report.

I see you are already decided, but same here too.  I take two easy days right before the race, but the third day out and beyond are fair game for any normal workout.

I was thinking the same thing and it would be great to catch up. Is your wife going to the "First Timers" meeting on Saturday? I'll be there to pick up my packet, drive the course and attend the meeting Saturday afternoon. If she isn't then we'll have to coordinate so we can catch up Sunday morning before the swim start. Let me know about the meeting and if somehow we don't connect, have a great race.

Chris -

I think we will plan on hitting the first timers meeting as well. I'd like to drive the course to see where I can breath and where I can push. I'll post here again if plans change but let's plan to meet up before the meeting.

I should be pretty easy to find... 6'5", red hair (mostly shaved with a two-car garage receding hairline), and a racing stripe goatee.

To the group -

Thanks for the encouragement going into my weekly ride last night. We averaged 19.3 even with 2000+ feet of climbing. 8 minutes faster than last time I rode that loop. Good confidence booster going into Sunday.

Best,
Scott

I drive every course before I ride it. Look for obstructions, gravel, bad pavement, etc. It is always best to know what you are walking into.

Good luck guys. We will be waiting for the race reports.
