I used to work for high-tech rags back in the day in Silicon Valley during the bubble (InfoWorld and PC/Computing). Freelanced before and after 1st child, then went full-time mom after 2nd. SV was a fun place to be in my late 20's in the late 90's! Then I got sick of it (and sunshine, believe it or not) and motored north. |

Looking forward to meeting you and Donato at IM Canada in August! Until then, here's hoping to learn lots from your experiences as it will be my first. The Vic-20 brings back lots of fond memories of space invaders and frogger. |

Regular 324 Calgary,AB | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULL So I need a little help from my mentor group....as you may know I am currently with a local tri club of mostly beginners (of which I am one) but I am looking for a bit more guidance with my training. I will be meeting with the head coach of our tri club on Thursday to discuss possible options of how his coaching group may support me (outside of the tri club) with my goal of completing IMCanada in August. |

I will be meeting with the head coach of our tri club on Thursday to discuss possible options of how his coaching group may support me (outside of the tri club) with my goal of completing IMCanada in August. I've never used a coach so there are undoubtedly others here who can give more experienced feedback, but here's what I would be wondering. What types of questions should I be asking? (I have no idea if these are appropriate or not. Plus, it sounds like it's his group or someone else who would be coaching?)

This group (as the name implies) is a really a geek heaven I am also a linux and Mac fan. I collect vintage video games and computers and have the COmmodore Vic-20 (still in a box) in my collection. My first video game console was the Atari 2600 and I learned to program on Sinclair ZX-81 (which I also have in my collection today). I also published a few years back a couple of games for vintage videogame consoles (Vectrex and Atari 5200). Sorry for going off topic here.. (BTW: I am currently working on a new project which many of us here on BT can benefit from - so if you want to find out more aobut it - please let me know and I will gladly share it with you guys). BTW: I am not a programmer or work in IT - just a chip design eng. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULL That is a good list for the coach. You probably want to know if he will help with form like swimming form or just provide workouts. You probably want to know if his plans are based on HR which means you will need a HR monitor and whether he will help you establish LT testing in each of the 3 events. Really good info to bring are your goals/planned events, your most recent Oly/HIM results as well as any 5k/10k/half mary/full mary times and what your typical workout week looks like in terms of availability current distances and times. And then the frequency and type of communication, like daily email, etc. to give you feedback on your performance. So is it casual coaching like, you should do BT Beginner 20 week IM plan or is it tailored to your current fitness and goals. |

Regular 324 Calgary,AB | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULL Thanks, Steve and Donato, for your thoughts and suggestions! You've mentioned a few things that I hadn't thought of myself....which is of course why I put the question out there. I have heard A LOT of positive feedback about the coach from lots of unrelated sources and I know that he is very well respected, both as an athlete and as a coach. Lots of his work is based on science and I know that their facility has the capacity to do VO2, LT testing and he is also authorized to fit and sell custom bikes. I have worked with him a bit as he is one of the coaches of my tri club so I know that we will get along. It will definitely be interesting to explore what types of coaching options are available and I will be feeling very prepared with my questions. |

Not nearly enough! I love OWS!! I just don't have anywhere nearby to do it on a more regular basis. Aside from racing, I'd say I get in one, maybe two if I'm lucky, a month. I'm hoping in the next 3-4 weeks to get in the water. |

Member 43 Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: enginerd's geek heaven - FULL Living in Chicago, it's usually just OWS in July and August for me. During these summer months I try to go often, 1-4 times a week. I will try to get as many OWS as I can before Ironman Lanzarote since I will be arriving a week early. |

Close to none for me. I'd say Just races - which are not that frequent in my case. Truth is that I have a fear from OWS. It is something I need to conquer. We have plenty of opportunities here in San Diego, with an amazing tri club (which I am a member of), which cost nothing but some spare time. And despite all that, I am not doing it. The fatal shark attack which took place less than a year ago near by, does not make it any easier for me. I am open to suggestions and would love to hear from others who experienced the same fear but managed to beat it. |

Pretty limited due to temperature (July and August only) and the lakes in Calgary are man-made only and access is to those living in these 'lake communities.' I will be trying to gain access through some friends with privileges, as well, they usually open up the lake to competitors the week prior to competition. |

When the temps in my local lake get above, oh, about 55 degrees, I do a weekly OWS. Good practice swimming to buoys, sighting using landmarks, etc. Summer temps top out around 70, which is much nicer than the few early weeks. Usually we start lake swims around May-ish. I will say, though, that I feel like it's really hard to get a good OWS workout. I tend to go one pace and it's hard to push it w/o walls and a pace clock. I think this season I will make an effort to do more speed stuff, as I have been doing more swimming in general than I did the past couple of seasons. |
