So please educate me:  Where is the line between saying someone is drafting vs just not being able to pass the guy ahead of you?  As narrow as the bike lane is and the volume of riders, you are going to clump up especially in the beginning.  Not having a great deal of experience in this, I'd hate to find myself penalized and not know that I was "drafting".

from the USAT website:

5.  Drafting - keep at least three bike lengths of clear space between you and the cyclist in front.  IF you move into the zone, you must pass within 15 seconds.

Position - keep to the right hand side of the lane of travel unless passing

Blocking - riding on the left side of the lane without passing anyone and interfering with other cyclists attempting to pass

Overtaken - once passed, you must immediately exit the draft zone from the rear, before attmepting to pass again

Ok, last post about my meager gains but I've gotta shout this one out.  Did a "baseline" mini-tri today just to see what would happen.
500yd swim, 10 mile bike (stationary), 1.5 mile run (treadmill).  Times were 9min, 37min and 12 min respectively.  Not a bad place to start all things considering.

Mike, you're up to a mile and a half on the run?  I guess I'd better get busy!

No pain on the run?

No pain.  Just a little tightness at first.  It is almost too good a thing.  It doesn't hurt at all while running, which I'm concerned could cause me to try to do too much too fast and end up wrecking something else.  I have written on my calendar to NOT go more than 1.5 miles and no more than 3 times a week (2 for the next two weeks).  Going to have to hold myself to that.  Come mid-Jan we'll re-evaluate.
Of note, these Vibram Five-Fingers are awesome.  My stride is different because of them.  It actually seems to be a longer stride which corresponds to more distance covered (ie faster) for a given pace.  I think I'm sticking with this "barefoot" running thing.

I guess what the complaints from the Pro women were in Kona is that the officials were very strict on enforcing the pass rule.  There was a misconception that if you got within the legal draft zone, you had to pass and could not simply fall back out of the zone.  Many of the pros apparently believed it was permissible to enter the draft zone in an attempted pass and then drop back to the safe distance.

I"ve heard good things about the Vibrams....but worry about overuse of them..think they have a great purpose for some training on softer surfaces and for drills and runs that are technique focused...but most of us run on very HARD surfaces....Kenyans run barefoot, not on sidewalks and roads so much....so I get a little *nervous* about the whole barefoot/vibram running thing....guess I'd say, listen to your body with an honest ear, especially if you are prone to injury

I once did a 5K race in downtown toronto and the guy who won it was running barefoot (this was back in 2002 so the barefoot movement was just starting to gain popularity).  But we were running on pavement in a not so nice area.  There would have been broken glass everywhere.  Ouchie.

My biggest hurdles are 1) work schedule.  Some weeks I work 75 hours, some weeks I work 40 hours.  Kind of unpredictable, but I'm trying my best to get my workouts in around work.  2)  My pool is closing for three weeks starting next week.  Cry  I'll be able to swim at another pool a few times, but not as much as I have been.  Guess it will be swim fitness maintenance mode.  3)  I think I'm getting sick right now.  I usually get 3-4 colds over the winter that really knock me out.  knock on wood, hopefully I will be fine.

Morning all, haven't been active on BT for awhile, but its become one of my goto sites since entering IM Florida (which will be my 1st IM)

My event plan for the next 11 months is

Feb 5-7    La Vuelta Puerto Rico - 375 mile, 3 day cycle tour of Puerto Rico (1st time)
Feb 27     8 Tuff Miles - Run across St John VI (includes 1400ft of climb) (6th time)
May 2      ST Croix 1/2 IM (4th time)
May 26    Beach 2 Beach Swim - 3.5 miles along coast of St John (5th time)
Nov 6      IM Florida (1st time)
Plus there'll be 3-4 sprint tris & maybe an Olympic or 2 thrown in for good measure.
My first question concerns wetsuits, I've read the blurb on the IMFL site, but in real terms do age groupers wear wetsuits? I'm used to open water swimming in the Virgin Islands, but also open fresh water pools (which are cold!) should I be planning to buy and start swimming in a wetsuit?
Secondly, cycling, my usual rides involve alot of climbing (those of you who have visited St Thomas will understand) I use a cyclocross bike (for the pot holes) but have another mostly carbon frame which I'm planning on rebuilding for IMFL - I'll likely be asking for advice as I go along.
Anyways, meant as an intro of sorts, advice and comments always welcome. BTW anyone else doing StX 1/2 IM

I think I saw one person at the start of IMFL '08 not wearing a wetsuit.  There are a couple big benifits to a wetsuit.  Number one is boyancy - which provides safety and comfort as well as speed.  The second obvious one is warmth.  If your body needs to provide extra heat as well as propulsion you will use more energy on the swim.

I've not competed in IMFL, but I was a volunteer for 2009. We saw a lot of people coming out of the swim that were shivering in T1, with wetsuits! So yes, you'll want to invest in one of those. Plus, I heard a lot of complaints about the jelly fish this past year- wouldn't want to brave those without some protection.

Daffodil, I feel your pain.  I'm getting over a cold now that has been driving me crazy for 2 weeks.  I pretty much don't plan to hit the ground running till after the holiday's anyway.  The break has been kinda nice...

if needing a wetsuit, there are plenty of used ones on the market now. new ones: definitely consider that rover by desoto if you can afford it. it sounds like a market changer/trend setter. ive had good success with my blue 70 helix after trying out three others.

My IM Canada fitness is long gone and yep the scale is up too. I bet my sand pile is much bigger than yours since I've been at the down time/slacking longer.

I took 4 weeks off s/b/r right after IM, then have been doing my own thing for awhile and doing rather poorly at the s/b/r balancing. Just today I emailed the coach I'm using this coming year and told him I'm ready for structure and to start training following a plan again...3.5 months without a plan is way to long for me.

I have my last cyclocross race of the season Saturday and I haven't been on any of my bikes for almost 2 weeks...top form I'm sure for race...I'll have fun though.

Many thanks for the wetsuit input - guess I'll start to check out the options.

OK, next question - American Airlines wants rediculous amounts to fly a bike at the moment, my preliminary plan would be to box the frame and express mail, the hire I nice set of wheels, anyone gone the wheel hire route, was it worthwhile, any recommendations on who to use?

TIA

Glen,

Where are you coming from? Tri-bike Transport is a good option for transporting your bike to the race.

Wheel rentals are a very good route to go. I get my wheels from Echappe Equipment... yes I work for them but even if I didn't I'd still go with them due to their diversity of wheels.

Ok...after many rides this week on my trainer, I decided to go w/ the Selle SMP saddle.  I'm taking the Cobb V-Flow Plus back.  Demo'd many saddles and the Selle worked best for me.  Now I just have to get ready for the long miles ahead next year!!

I cannot believe how much strength and muscle mass I lost while training for the IM in 08.

If at all possible, don't give up your strength training while training for the IM.

Which model did you get?

I have the Glider and rode the Pro in '08. Glider fits my bum better though.
