Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Boston Beginner - 2010-07-22 10:29 AM Do you think we will get a letter from WTC describing the chain of events and their plans or back up plans? Ha. Based on how they've handled IMFL, I don't think you'll be hearing a word, other than "we're aware of the issues" Based on the current schedule, it "should" be ready to go by IMAZ. But they're on a very tight schedule, and construction rarely completes on time, so they don't have a lot of wiggle room. Tempe will probably be offering its contractors an early completion bonus, but who knows if they can meet it..... |

I'm from Tempe and I was listening to the radio this morning... they specifically said, "they will have the lake ready to go for the Ironman triathlon." I'm sure WTC has already contacted the city to inform them on the situation and their plans to fix. I live a couple minutes away from Tempe Town lake and I saw it first-hand last night. It looks bad. Residents who live along the "lake" are complaining about the smell. The city basically told them they have to deal with it for 90 days. |

I would think the financial impact of moving or worse, canceling, this thing would be enormous and give them all the motivation in the world to fix it as soon as possible. |

If this is correct, what is the distance of the 1st run? Or, is there a chance that the race will be cancelled? Sounds like the lake will be open but it also sounds like they will be cutting it close. Just curious. |

Champion 8903 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread From what I've read, the town of Tempe has been blaming Bridgestone (the manufacturer of the dam bladder) and asking them to back up the 20+ year warranty and pay for the repair. OTOH, Bridgestone has been blaming the town, saying that "We told them they were not taking care of it properly, hence its early demise." I hope this doesn't turn into a "he said, she said" battle with a lot of finger pointing and very little progress. But when was the last time you ever saw a construction project completed on time? |

New user 43 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Worst case: Wonder if they'd even consider relocating the site up to one of the lake (Saguaro?) areas just to onclude a swim. Hillier overall than Tempe no doubt but given the choice, I'd much rather have only ONE run rather than two for an Ironman race. Edited by Archangel65 2010-07-25 2:33 PM |

If the swim is cancelled in an Ironman event what does the race turn into. Is it a run/bike/run OR do you just NOT do the swim and just bike and run? While I believe this is going to be fixed I just want to know what happens IF it is not fixed in time. Thanks for any insight you can give! |

Regular 209 Flagstaff | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I agree with Chad - I don't know of a precedent. I would guess it depends upon how much notice they have that the lake isn't going to be ready. If they don't find out until a few weeks before the race that the lake isn't ready then I'd guess they just drop the swim and it's a bike/run event. If they find out a couple of months ahead then they'd probably try to throw a 10-15K run on the front and make it a run/bike/run. At this stage <4 months from race day it's hard to imagine them moving the entire race to a totally different course. That's a massive undertaking for a race the size of an Ironman. Again, I'm just guessing. Edited by bschorr 2010-07-27 1:38 PM |

Regular 136 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Thanks for the information you guys. I have to admit that I am disappointed in a decision I made last November. I turn 50 this year and really wanted to start and finish Silverman. I attempted it back in 2006 but didn't make the bike cutoff. Hard race but just a wonderful venue overall. Anyway, several friends of mine decided to do Arizona so I signed up for that since I'd have people to train with. I really think it's going to be OK but then again it sounds like we won't know until close to November in which case it would probably be too late to sign up for Silverman AND change all my time off from work AND I would be throwing $575 away and then having to pay for Silverman. I tried hard to talk my friends into doing Silverman but overall Arizona worked better for everybody. I'm just bummed that the race MIGHT not be what we signed up for. I know they say to control what you can control and forget the things you cannot control BUT I'm still bummed at the news. Although it does sound promising that the lake will be ready but their deadline is so close to race day. Just getting some things off my chest. I completed Ironman Wisconsin in 2008 and really wanted to do another one the year I turn 50! We all deal with our mid-life crisis in our own way and I will just be very disappointed if this race turns into anything less than a true iron distance event. |

The most likely outcome is that they will fix the dam, and we'll have to do a proper Ironman in November. I'm training with that in mind. |

Seriously, I'm getting sick of people questioning all of this. Just train and stop complaining. Everyone is in the same boat for IMAZ. They had the full bike and full run only. Right, but that was a "game-time decision". In the case of IMAZ they might know weeks ahead of time that the lake won't be ready. In which case they MIGHT make alternate arrangements like adding another run on the front end. That said...I'm pretty sure the lake WILL be ready and that IMAZ will go off as expected on Nov 21. Nothing we can do about it either way. Just train and do the best we can with the cards we're dealt on raceday. |

Sorry I have angered some people. I'll try and make any question in the future more black and white otherwise I won't bother posting. I didn't mean anything to sound like complaining I was just thinking out loud and won't bother you all in the future. I guess I have thin skin but sometimes on the internet people can be quick to judge. |
