YO Eric! or any of my swimming capable companions!

After carefuly reviewing your suggestions and the BT links you provided, I've decided to start my swim training with this plan...  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1175

My question for you is when to use zoomers/fins?  Can I use them for all drills?  All swimming? Only Drills? Only kicking drills? I haven't picked up a pair yet but plan to do so before I get back in the water next week.

Any guidance would be awesome!  Thanks!

-Brian

Did an easy 3.5 miles on the track tonight.  I'm liking the extra slow pace to get back into running after my layoff for my tight hammy.  Got a new pair of shoes last week.  The "perfect fit" wasn't so perfect.  I let the kid convince me that a normal width would be OK, when I'm always in a wide.  New shoes are nice, but still looking for the ones that move your feet really fast.

I love zoomer fins compared to the big fins. I would use them on kicking drills and some speed work your doing. Dont use them for stroke drills though as this defeats the purpose of the stroke drill.

On a bad front for me, I was playing basketball on monday and tore my hammy. I go see a specialist friday and MRI sometime next week. It hurts like you know what to walk, and I cant strectch it or anything. It was the closest ive come to crying over an injury, and ive blown my knee out before.

Bummer on the hammy Jacob. Hang in there...you'll heal quickly I'm sure.

OK, I don't absolutely hate swimming anymore. I read a cool tip on BT yesterday regarding breathing. It said to slowly exhale underwater so you're nearly empty when you come up for breath. I tried it last night. It'll still take some practice to make it more automatic, but man what a difference. I got so zoned in on practicing that, that I swam 100m without stopping. Amazing what 1 day and a good tip will do for you. I added 6x50 for a pretty good little work out. I'm thinking 500m might be doable by May! Man, I'm pumped...
Since my calf is hurt, I'll spend a solid month just learning to swim. The boss lady says I can buy a bike late next month, so that'll be my next big learning adventure!

We put him on a milk carton already, it is being distributed to donkey farms across Wisconsin.

Jacob, thanks for the zoomer tips and man that sucks about the Hammy.  Those things take forever to heal!  A colleague of mine tore his during the NYC Marathon in November, he is still working the whole day, every day standing up at his desk, he can't sit.  Take care of it, and even though you will be out of comission for a while, don't forget about us.  I'm going to need more swimming advice in the upcoming weeks.

lol theres no forgetting. I went to my sports med guy and he told me wait a week and start stretching it. Not real hard or anything, but he knows I will put in the work to help it heal. Its a pain to sit at me desk thats for sure, but I get up every half hour and move a couple minutes, it helps. I am still hoping to make my June sprint, he said there will be ALOT of riding on the drainer for a couple months.

I also talked a couple of my more technical swimmers and we are going to do some underwater shows and put them on youtube, so that everyone can have them. So I also have a program called ventrilo so we can use that as well, we can all watch the videos together and talk it out.

Alright all you crazies!!!  I'm back now and almost done with my one week off season of nothingness and am getting uber excited to start my life as a triathlete again!!!  finished off the indoor fun (46.3 total miles over 3 different races over 2 days) with some good and mixed results.  that closes the "running" portion on my year.  Went to my fav local bike shop (sponsored me last year) and talked with the owner again (1984 silver medalist in cycling) and he not only agreed to sponsor again but upped everything across the board!!!!  now if i can only find a pool...................

so how is everyone doing?  did you all play nice while i was away?

Doesn't bother me any.  I have nothing to prove, and I'm okay with that.

Nice inside run Davey!  You da donk!

For me, managed a snowy 5 mile run yesterday.  I enjoy running when it's just starting to snow.  About a 1/4 inch when I started, and about an inch by the time I was done.

Today, I got the old mag trainer fixed up.  Managed only 40 minutes for a planned 60, but wanted to "save something" for snow shoveling.  lol.  Trainer was a lot harder than I thought.  With time, I'll be able to tweak the settings, and boost my performance.  It's been way too long since I've been on the road bike.  I think it thought it had been abandoned or something.

Hangin' with marmadaddy for the weekend. He took me out for 10K in -3 degrees. Was yummy, inspired me to do more outdoor runs. Jsut signed up for my first sprint - in May. Hard to get motivated this far out. Which is why I need the donkeys. R

If I may, are you strictly doing running training for this time period, starting back at the beginning of Jan.?  You have a number of faster runs going for you.  Would you consider a swim for a rest day?

I am currently training for a 1/2 marathon in April.  My only opportunity to work out today is at lunch, no pool available.  It is either a lift, run, or rest.  I am swimming tomorrow morning.  I could hop on the trainer for an hour tonight, that is another option. I'm just shot and un-energized right now, aka, draggin !
