Elite 3498 Chicago | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread CONGRATULATIONS on passing your boards. I know those are a bear! 2 weeks out is what i would suggest. i'm in a similar boat (misery loves company)...i've been only training 5-7hrs/week for this race. it will be a very interesting day because of that. i am not targeting this race as any priority and doing it just to be with friends so i'm not really preparing for it at all. past 6 weeks i've been swimming 1x/week, running 1x/week and biking 1-2x/week. it is what it is so don't stress about what you can't change, just embrace what you can. Belize breeze - 2010-06-20 12:43 PM Here is my problem! race day is right around the corner. I have had to study for my boards,Thank God I passed. However, I feel under trained. I have been doing a lot of biking and working on my nutrition. I have not done a lot of running this year. I swim 3 times a week I have done 2 OWS when should I sart tapering? BTW. haven't kept up with my logs but did most of the workouts..... |

Got room for one more in that boat? I'm in that 5-7 hour range and feel undertrained. Love some feedback and advice My assessment of were I’m at 27 days from my fist 70.3 attempt: ( in short I feel behind) SWIM Pool yardage /time in water: Feel good about it, longest swim to date was 3000 yards and I’m comfortable swimming 60-70 minutes continuous. Although I did cramp up in the second to last length during the 3000 yard swim. Could have been to the prior days workouts , but that excuse won’t help me on race day. Have done an OWS on the course and my swim group from Racine will be beginning our 3 times a week am swims on Wednesday so come race day I should be prepare for it as best as I can. Who know what the temps , current , and waves will be like. BIKE My June has been less than expected although I did get to do a full course ride 2 weeks ago. It felt good and not stressed. Need to figure out nutrition and fluid plan. RUN Prior to 2 weeks ago and my race on Saturday I felt it was my best event of the three. I’ve been very careful not to overdo it and get injured , but 2 weeks ago following the course ride and 3000 yard pool workout (different days) a was doing a typical 8 mile run when a case of “shin splints” popped up. Took a week off from running and had a 10 mile race this weekend. It was hot, humid and although my shins were fine my time was not great and I felt tired. The seeds of doubt in regards to 70.3 were sowed. In review my mental approach (for the 10 mile race) was weak and as a last minute entry I was not focus enough on my reason for doing the race. I got caught up in hitting a goal time and beating out some friends doing the race. My stated goal from day 1 of the 70.3 journey is to make every cut off time and finished the event. It will be a PR regardless of the time. So my keys for the next 27 days are: 1. Get/Stay healthy 2. Figure out nutrition 3. Work on mental focus during training

Regular 84 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread I am only getting in 8-10 hours a week also. Hard when you have kids and teach full-time. I did an olympic distance tri on Saturday and it felt good but when I was doing it I was just thinking "Gee, I am only 1/2 way if I were doing my Racine race!" I go on the idea that mental training is just as important as physical! |

My friends and co-workers think I am crazy for even doing this. I can remember being 240 pounds and not being able to run to the end of the block. |

Another 5-7 slacker here!! Had to lay off running for a few weeks due to an injury and starting to ramp up again. I'm starting to get some mileage back in running, but running in the heat is just killing me. I may start hitting 8-9 hours over the next few weeks and then ease back. My plan for race day is to put in a solid swim and bike and then try to enter a meditative state as I run, walk, crawl, roll, etc. my way through the last 13.1. This is my first HIM and I had higher hopes for putting together the entire package, but I guess you gotta roll with it. Feedback and advice? Realize that you're not alone. Sure, there will be no shortage of people who have put in more time and will be able to leave in the dust. Forget about them. Strategize about how you can race smart and get the most out of yourself, given what you're able to bring to race day. Good luck over the next few weeks and at the race! I still have the occassional waves of SUUUPER excited, and then SUUUPPPER nauseated...ha! I was wondering the same thing!! I've only done one 70.3 event and we found out waves 2 weeks beforehand when the race packet was published online. Just did the High Cliff HIM on Saturday so am pretty pysched for Racine. My coach keeps me hopping, although I feel like I should be running more . This week is all about recovery so I am sitting around twiddling my thumbs. Edited by SSMinnow 2010-06-22 3:17 PM |

I did Racine last year and had an absolute BLAST!!!! Wearing the pink cape on the run was helpful. Will be wearing it again . |

I am in the same boat as the rest of the under trained due to an injury. I am now back at it and am a bit worried. I thought I was good to go for the swim but then I swam in Lake Michigan! Ugggg so much harder then the little lake I have been swimming in, I have only hit the 56 mile ride one time(with this group) and it was very painful! There is no way I could have ran/walked/crawled or even rolled the 13.1! My run is coming back but I am no where near the miles I should be at. I plan on enjoying the day in a very painful kind of way! I am still out there doing this eeeeaaaaawwwwsome sport and I wouldn't want it any other way. |

If this link works you can kind of see the brown in the lake. For me swimiming close to the shoreline gives me enough of a feel for the waves, current and cold. So I would say it is safe without kayak support Edited by RaytownPete 2010-06-23 9:52 AM Attachments ---------------- Doc1.pdf (95KB - 13 downloads) |

I used to live in Racine a few years ago so am somewhat familiar with the beach, but don't remember a buoy line anywhere. Hoping to slide into the area next week if possible! Suzy |

Could you possibly, pretty please, note the swim course on something like mapmyrun so we can get an ideas as to where the start, turns and finish is? Its a lot to ask. The only consolation could be that you wont have to worry about me passing you. Mark H. |

Extreme Veteran 684 Racine, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Racine : Official Thread will do, only thing is in past years the swim was "short' and very close to the shore not sure WTC will take it out farther or not. Pretty sure if you go to route feature on BT there are past maps already done. check back mid morning tomorrow. This year the city of racine add a "mat" that runs from the water all the way up to transition area , just hope they use it for the race otherwise the sand is soft and a bit of a bear to run in after the swim. |

Tri Wisconsin is doing an organized group ride on the course that morning starting at 7:30am... with SAG wagon and all... would probably be a great thing to show up for and tag along with... i assume that there will be a reasonable turnout... and that they will split off in to different groups based on ability... fyi - the course is pretty choppy in sections... so make sure to keep tabs on your rear bottle cages to make sure you dont lose anything... |
